I need help obtaining groceries
Hi. I've been a member of vegweb from a while, but I'm not active on the forums. However need some advice.
I'm really struggling financially right now. I make $2.13/hr plus tips at a beer and pizza pub type place. Th business is so slow right now I don't know how they remain open. But I live in an economically depressed area and don't have tons of options as far as employment.
Anyway, I need help buying food. But I don't know what to do. I don't know who can help. I did the food stamp calulator and it says I can get like $75/month in help. BUT I have heard of people, usually single people with no dependants like myself, being told could get foods stamps then waiting 3 hours at social services and being told they can't get anything.
Meanwhile I'm hungry a lot. I'm not going to starve, but I'm not eating well. Food is expensive really. At least healthy food. I don't have a microwave and I don't like to use the oven/stove too much because it runs up the power bill.
Does anyone have any advice, like who I could tun to?
Or does anyone have any tips on getting food stamps?
Are you on facebook? I don't think I can send messages on vw, but try to find me on fb.
just an FYI that everyone can now send private messages through vegweb - there's a little message icon next to the blue 'view profile' one under everyone's name in a thread...
oh ok, didn't know that, thanks!!
lubi, here's a thought in helping w/ affording groceries, send 'gift cards' for stores nearby.
I have more than I need when it comes to food stamps, and (if I could afford $hipping) would be more than happy to send foodstuffs out!!

what about if everyone sent a few bucks? I hope this isn't embarrassing, but I've been super broke before, and I think you lose all sense of embarrassment when you're broke(at least I did)
People have helped me in time of need, I just want to be there for someone
Thanks so much for the advice guys. It is so sweet of you to offer. I don't want anyone t have to go to any trouble though. It is great that you guys would offer to help a stranger.
I'm really going to look in the Food Not Bombs things. It turns out the chapter is pretty close to where I live. Also I'll be applying for food stamps. That is my plan so far.
I like the crockpot idea, although I have never used one. That will be a new adventure for me. I'm sure I can fiind one at a Goodwill.
Thanks again for the advice.
My advice is to slowly stock up on rice and beans. Then add a food bank box of veggies to this staple. You can do a lot with those very cheaply by buying beans in dried form and soaking then cooking yourself.
Search Salvation Army or Goodwill or local thrift stores for a crock pot. Look into your local chapter of Freecycle for anything that would help out material goods wise.
Go to Food Not Bombs and eat a good meal!
Also if you could look for another part time job or even just more hours maybe, that could help.
Do ask about vegetarian options at food banks. A lot of the ones that are "official" ones (meaning you can only go if you're in a certain area) have veg stuff, you just have to ask. Sometimes all they can do is sub out meat for veggies, but that's helpful.
