grrr apartments

I haven't had to call the property manager in about 6 months with a problem. So when does my new problem happen? Early morning on Labor Day. No one is answering the phone. I left a message on the emergency line. Blah. I doubt unless the apartment flooded anyone will call. Grrrrrrrrrrr

What's the problem?

Ok the smoke alarm won't stop beeping. All the smoke alarm in the building are hooked up to one big system and the one in my apartment is wired into the wall someway. So I can't buy a new one. I've tried several different new batteries. I think the smoke alarm has gone bad and they need to install a new one.

I'm really pissed off about it. This is insane. It isn't beeping just a little, it is a very loud sound and several beeps in a row.

Baypuppy- I know how it is to live in a crappy place!!! Oct/Nov my lease is up!!!

I checked it says "single and/or multiple station smoke alarm"

The red LED light is flashing like it would if the battery was dead, but I have correctly inserted several new batteries now. That can't be it.

It says to vacuum dust away I don't think that is it but it is worth a try.

I'm not sure what is going on. Usually if there is a problem every alarm goes off because they are on one big system.

Thanks for help baypuppy. I really need to vent about this.

Ugh.  I had a smoke detector beeping issue in a previous apartment.  It beeped all night.  Have you seen the "Friends" episode where Phoebe can't get her smoke detector to stop beeping?  Hahaha.

This might not be the safest thing, but if I were you, I would just take the batteries out and let the thing sit there dead.  It shouldn't beep if there's no power going to it at all.  Then you can let someone know about your problem tomorrow without the annoying beeps all day and night.

I disconnected from the wall. I'm that is illegal but I was going crazy. See if I took out the battery it was still beeping!!! So just had to remove the wires from the back.

Thanks guys. Glad to know I'm not the only one that has had this problem. It really was like that Friends episode. The sound will drive you up the wall.

It sounds like that one particular detector has gone bad.  If all the detectors are wired into each other, they should all go off simultaneously whenever one does  (that way, when there's a fire, all of the alarms will emit so you can become aware no matter which area you're located in).  If only one is "chirping," then it usually means that one detector has gone bad.  (This is, of course, knowing that you have already tried replacing the battery numerous times since they will chirp when the battery has gone dead, too.)

Go ahead and vacuum out all of your detectors, just in case a spider/insect crawled inside one and set it off  (smoke is made up of particles of unburnt carbon materials and an insect or a lot of dust or large pieces of dust can sometimes break the ionic beam it reads and falsely set the alarm off).  Some people will blow the detectors out with some type of pressurized air too, instead of vacuuming, if they have access to pressurized air (like an air hose for inflating tires- or sometimes firefighters can try holding one of their air bottles up to the alarm and opening the bottle to blow it out, etc).

You can try "turning off" that specific detector by taking out the battery, but usually that doesn't work as it will chirp/beep the same as if it had a dead battery.  You might be able to find a little square module where the wiring comes into the detector and unplug it from that specific detector, but it depends on the model and how it was wired as to how easy that will be without ruining the wiring for the next detector.

Oops, I just saw you posted while I posted.   :)    As long as there are other working detectors throughout the building and floors I don't think it would be considered illegal (depends on each city's code).  It would definitely be illegal to disconnect/disarm the entire alarm system if you're in a multi-dwelling property.
