Ugh it's so awful. People need to learn that it's really cheaper to buy ingredients to make your own food rather than go buy fast food.
Yes! That is true. I have a friend who's 26 (my age also) and he's been having cholesterol and high blood pressure problems. His doctor obviously told me to lay off the fast food and unhealthy, salty, fatty food, etc. But his roomate (my best friend) told me that she's been finding McDonald trash in their garbage can. She's also been arguing with him that No, Hamburger helper pasta is not the same as regular pasta...
People are unbelievable...
Yeah, I think people really need to be educated on making cheap and healthy meals. The guy in the video said he was looking for lunch that cost $2-3...I can make food for a week on about that much money! Bulk rice + bulk beans + fresh or frozen veggies!
I saw that KFC is now unrolling a "value" dollar menu as well and in the news SPAM is making a huge come back.
Gross, gross, gross.
I go dumpster diving at Trader Joe's with friends and we get bags and bags of apples, breads, ect., it's not pretty--but it's free.

I really need to tag along with my sister sometime when she does that :)

Totally. Greens (collard, turnip, mustard) are 79 cents a bunch. Some brand of frozen veggies is always on sale. SOME sort of fruit is always cheap (bananas and oranges right now)--and if not there's decent frozen out there.
That's my budget meal.
I just don't get it. lol. I'd rather live off oatmeal and bananas.
I think it is a little more than just the recession aspect. The citizens of the US work a lot more than they (we) fifty years ago and don't have any time for anything anymore. I know that is a lame reason, but is unfortunately the mentality of most Americans (United Statesians) in my opinion. We want bigger and faster. We can't wait for our dinner to cook, we're in too much of a hurry and don't have time for that.
Perfect example:
I asked my mom to cook me a homemade dinner for my birthday a few years ago because I hadn't had a home cooked meal from my mom in ages.
She buys a frozen Stouffer's lasagna and heats that up in the oven.
What is homemade about that? I'm still a little bitter about that.

My sister is like that, but I don't know if she realizes that it ISN'T cooking. She will buy rice pilaf in a box, macaroni and cheese, frozen cookie dough, etc. and tell people that she's a big chef. ::) In actuality, I don't think she's ever made something from scratch in her life..
I already bake quite a bit, but now I,m going to do it even more. I have two kids under 3 and 'snacks' can become expensive. Now, I am buying large containers of apple sauce and just give them a bit in bowls. Im going to make homemade granola bars and make my oatmeal from scratch, not from an instant pouch anymore. Plus it will be better for the environment as well.
I agree with you guys, if it comes in a box and just requires water or heat, it's not called cooking. It's called heating.

I was thinking about doing that too. people in that interview who think they have to eat junk food because they are broke, should have watched that episode on Oprah about freegans. Why eat junk for cheap when you can eat healty for free?
thats freaking nasty. im afraid that my family's gonna resort to that when i go to college in a few months. seriously, making your own meals is much cheaper and healthier. and dumpster diving? I'M IN! ;D
stuff like that makes me really sad; when my family did not have a lot of money, I remember eating fast food and pizza and soda all the time and wondering why I was so fat and unhealthy.
people need to wake up and realize that you can eat healthy on a budget and eating vegan really is cheaper and better for your over all health.

do it!!
This couple lived on a $1/day each for food for a month (vegan i think) here's the blog:
://onedollardietproject.wordpress.com/
2/07 $59.68 at whole foods (bulk run, will last quite some time).
2/10(?) $13~ at korean market (produce/ greens).
2/12 $3.50 at Mr. Kiwi (cliff bar, avocado and blueberries)
I would estimate I am under $100 for the month on average, the rabbit whom is on a raw diet is also factored in. She eats roughly 2lbs/ day.
2/15 $27.33 Indian market (greens and veg for the week)
I am over the $100 mark, I wont need to head to whole foods until next month.
_________
total $103.51

Yeah, the two who did it are vegan. ;)b
Did you see those tings? Anyway, I think the diet is really sad. Me for one live with a fam that would rather die than buy a Big Mac. Trader Joes is an awesome place to eat healthy on a budget as is, you'll be shocked, Whole Foods. Though Whole Foods has earned the nickname Whole Paycheck, they are a lot of economical items there such as their big ol' jug of organic apple juice, it's $6.99 for 128 oz., where I live normal supermarkets sell organic apple juice at $3.99 for 32 ounces. When it comes to protein organic tofu at TJ's is $1.19 and you could eat organic beans (canned or bagged) for around $1.00. TJ's the organic lettuce is $2.99 FOR 3 large stalks. Organic pasta is pretty cheap anywhere around $2.00. I also love TJ's organic mixed veggies $1.69 a bag. I also buy ganic brown rice in bulk. See, it's easy to live organic and economical.

It's affordable depending where you live I think. We dont have Whole Foods here (Canada) :'( But I just bought organic brown rice, 900g and it cost me $5.19. As for organic produce, it's not as cheap here as it is in the States I beleive. A large container of organic spinach (312g) is $5.99. But there is 2 grocery stores in my town and I always shop at both places to get the best prices and produce. Still, my monthly grocery bill is WAY more than I've ever heard anyone on this site mention. I NEED to bring my grocery bill down.
