My name's pretty easy -- 7 --I have seven children. However, some of the names here at vegweb are pretty thought provoking. How did you come to choose your name?

I've noticed a bunch of new people here so I thought I'd bump this.

Welcome

Anna is the name of my Patron Saint, St. Anna, the grandmother of Jesus. It is not my legal name, but the name choose when I became an Orthodox Christian, and most people call me Anna. I like that the things we know about St. Anna are things she did to serve others - being the Mother of the Virgin Mary, giving generously to the poor, being a loving and helpful part of her community. If it weren't for those things, she would not have been known to us as a Saint, since she wasn't a Martyr or a great scholar, or a founder of hospitals or monasteries - she just served the people she knew with Love. I also liked that her name is pronouncable the world over and travels well, and that her feast day is close to my birthday!

The 1111 is my Wedding Anniversary - November 11 - a day of Peace, while honoring those who serve (aka Armistice/Veterans day - the day WWI ended).

That's my parents Anniversary, too, Anna  :)

Well, my name is easy to guess. I liked the Karate Kid movies as a kid. And I have been into martial arts for a little over 6 years. I wanted it to be just Karate Kid, but it's always taken, so I threw in the year I was born, and it works every time now.

I had other names as well. I used to have a screen name (Dave might like this one) DizzyDrummer. I used that for years (before martial arts). Dizzy is my nickname and I played drums back then. So the name just fit. I play drums again, so I'm thinking about using that name again.

Prana means "breath". I just really enjoy yoga and meditation, where proper breathing is key. Belly, I used just because I like the way it sounds and because it reminds me of tongue-in-cheek kung-fu movies.

I'm just a deep- breathin'-rubber-bodied fool.

I am a yinzer...  native Pittsburgher...  and I'm a mama to one wonderful little boy.

We're living in California right now, though...

I don't like California.  Hoping to move back to the 'burgh this year.

That's funny! My mom's from Pittsburgh and we spent lots of time there over the years, and I've never heard that moniker! do you know its origin - is it from the expression Y'uns, or some other source?

Weird...I live in Pittsburgh, too!  I live downtown.  I'm moving as soon as I'm done with graduate school, not because I dislike it that much, but because I can't find a job!  :-\

Intro:  I'm Meg, y/o 22 grad student, vegan. You all have really cool meanings behind your names...I just like stars.

Yeah, yinzer comes from yinz...  or however you want to spell it.  It's a shortening of "you ones" so you will see yins, youns, etc.

I am trying to teach my son to speak Pittsburghese but my husband has a way of foiling my plans.  Just last week my son corrected me when I called a vacuum a sweeper.  "That's not a sweeper, daddy says it's a vacuum!"  >:(

I guess the job market in Pgh is kind of iffy.  We're not sure DH will be able to find a job there but we're hoping...  there or Ohio or Michigan...  somewhere we can be nearer to family.  I'm sure he'll find SOMETHING between 3 states.

Not a vegan here, though...  just sort of quasi-vegetarian.  :)

Silly me! I thought everyone called them sweepers. After all, "nature abhors a vacuum!"  ;)

I get a kick out of Y'uns and Y'all  - since most foreigh languages have a plural of you and English officially doesn't, but really we do! Friends get a kick out of it when I translate the plural you into "y'uns" or "y'all" (depending on the hearer's region of origin)

I don't think I've replied to this. I signed up at VegWeb the same day I signed up for VeggieBoards (I remember because I thought they belong together because there was a veggieboards link on vegweb at the time). My name is Anna and I think that was taken so I used VegAnna, which is self explanatory, though a tad bit boring... :P

I love this thread...
Mine is for the Daryl Hall and John Oates song Sarah smile. When I was born that was the number "1" song and my Mom loved it. It stuck, I have a big smile and was named Sarah.

i got my s/n and merrick's name from power rangers characters and the 04 stands for the yr that he was born. karone is my fav character from all the pr series. in in space she was astronema the rangers enemy turned good when andros (her brother) broke zordon's containment tube which changed all evil characters either into dust or humans without powers, she went to the lost glalaxy series b/c they made one of the other rangers into a ghost and had to become a ranger. with merrick i got his name from a wild force character. he was the origianl luanr wolf centuries ago, protector of princess shayla, he got turned into zenaku when trying to protect his pple but instead after he fought off master org he remained zenaku enemie of the rangers until they broke the curse, after they did he became the lunar ranger again. my real name is actually jennifer but i like to be called jenny.

i got my name because i'm "punk" and i thought it would be an interesting spoof of a preppy phrase. lol.  :-\

I love your screen name. My best friend is "punk", too. We have nothing in common except snowboarding (thanks to her), being vegan, and martial arts. But she is the most wonderful person I have ever met. I'm not saying I'm "normal" either (I dress like a "skate rat" and she dresses "punk." So does her daughters). But we are so close. I have to tell her about your screen name. She will get a kick out of it :)

Ralph is a cutie isn't he? ... or at least I thought so back then (I was 12 LOL). Yea, it is hard to believe he was 25 when he made the movie (the first one, I think). I thought he was younger. Ah, the 80's .. what memories ......  :D

I'm glad to have the chance to discuss this.  I think my name could be interpreted in a very sexually explicit way, but actually....

it's a Japanese word.  it means "underdog."  mah-keh-ii-nuu

Why?  First of all, I live in Japan (a small city; not Tokyo).  Second of all, I feel outnumbered--- no one's white, no one's a veg*n, no one cares about animals (more than as toys-- like pets but more selfish)...

So I figure, all I can do is go down... but I will fight until then!

Plus, "Holden Caulfield" is too long for a handle.

For ease in finding a nickname that's never taken, I donned the name of one of my favourite plants - the 'sun pitcher' (heliamphora), a carnivorous pitcher plant native to ... er, somewhere in South America I think. I had one of these elegant little plants once, but our kittens of chaos nibbled it to death.  :'(

Yuppers, I'm a plant person.
