You are here

4th of july!

i generally dislike holidays, but now that i get to spend my holidays with my most favorite person ever who is also vegan, it makes holidays just a little more to look forward to.

i thought since tomorrow is pretty much a holiday celebrating this crazy country we live in, i thought we (me, my boy and his friend) could celebrate it by eating the most traditional american foods possible.  i know its practically tradition to grill out burgers and steak, but we dont have a grill unfortunately.

so what are your favorite american dishes?  i was thinking of dragonflys ribs or whatever those amazing things are and mashed potatoes, but thats a typical dinner for us, not much for a holiday meal anymore.  so give me suggestions!!!

Make something red white and blue to be trendy and yuppie and crap.

That's what all the soccer moms around here do I bet.  Oh wait, I'm sure they buy something red white and blue pre-made at the grocery store. Nevermind!

Baypuppy, I concur- my girl doggy, who is rescue, is terrified.  She's been hiding under furniture since Sunday, when the neighbors started firing junk off randomly.

I like veg*n burgers but not hot dogs!!! Mac and cheese is good. Oh and homemade fries with plenty of ketchup...plus they are so easy to make!!!

Since there are so many good vegan cupcake recipes, with not make some red, white, and blue cupcakes?

Happy Fourth of July everyone!!! Remember everyone deployed overseas. By the end of this month 4 people I know will be deployed so my thoughts and prayers are with them this 4th!!! No reason to complain about the heat here when it is 117 degrees in Iraq!!!!

So I'm not the only one with annoying neighbors and a totally freaked out pet!

How about The Pigs Are Safe in the Barn? (with a nod to PinP)  That seems very American to me.  Truth is, I didn't like pigs in a blanket as a kid but I'm tempted to try these because of the great name.  And I figure it must be better, cuz it's vegan.  ;)

I once made a cherry pie for a 4th of July picnic and I cut out star shapes in the top crust.  I thought it was pretty cool, if I do say so myself.

No, sadly, because the world would be a *better* place without annoying neighbors and our doggies would be much less scared.

This thread is making me so hungry.
Sugar Cookies or cupcakes with red/white/blue- nice ideas!
Oh, and the fruit salad sounds delish as well.

yesss! thanks for all your great ideas!  i was thinking of doing something red white and blue for dessert, but that red white and blue salad sounds fantastic, thats a much healthier dessert than what i was thinking (cheesecake!).  and ranch dressing!  how could i have forgotten one of americas most beloved salad dressing turned condiment.

i cant imagine how scary firecrackers are to animals!  its pretty horrible.

Here's a really neat July 4th recipe from the Fat Free Vegan Blog... I wish I had agar, I'd make it!
Red, white and blue cupcakes would awesome, too.
I went on Food Network's website and found awesome recipes for Potato Salad and Macaroni Salad which are EASILY veganized just by using Vegenaise in place of regular mayo.  They'll go perfectly with some grilled veggie burgers and dogs with all the fixings.  (Along with some grilled veggies).

I agree with Lauranc, let's not forget (or ignore) those deployed right now!  Happy 4th!

What about a "jello" cake with soy whip cream, strawberries and blueberries?

i can say my cats do NOT enjoy it one bit!

I live near a lake that has a fireworks display.  This year my very brave cat, Cat, freaked out but sat at the top of the stairs instead of running downstairs and hiding under a bed.  For such a little fellow with no understanding of what the big noises were about (his major pet peeve is loud noise), I thought that was extremely brave of him.

On to the festivities.  Potato salad, green salad, french bread with garlic butter, and cobbler with ice cream.  I say forget even bothering with a protein.  Also, if it's as hot where you are, I'd vote for fruit smoothies.  You could blend some red berries first and put that in the bottom of the glass, stick in some ricemellow, top it with blended bluish berries, and top it off with a another dollop of ricemellow.  It could be your red, white, and blue.

Veggie hamburgers and veggie hot dogs are traditional. And potato salad ,coleslaw or a tossed salad I usually serve. Corn on the cob is must. And sometimes I serve these spicy mushrooms.

This year I'm serving veggie hot dogs with relish, corn on the cob, pasta salad with red onions, olives and cherry tomatoes, coleslaw, my spicy mushrooms, a little asparagus.

And for dessert we are having chocolate covered bananas with homemade vanilla ice cream (it's called nice cream) and some watermelon we are having.

                                    Happy Fourth of July everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The blueberry and strawberry jello with whipped cream sounds good but when I was mentioned jello cake I was actually talking about a cake.  You take a baked white cake, poke lots of holes in it, mix up your favorite jello, and then pour it all over the cake.  Let it set in the fridge for several hours until the jello sets and top it with the whipped cream.  On the 4th we would make a flag design with strawberry stripes and use the blueberries as the stars.  I've never tried making one since I became vegan simply because I'm the only one who would be eating it but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard.  It's a nice cake in the summer because it's served chilled.

So I'm not the only one with annoying neighbors and a totally freaked out pet!

I used to have a dog that would actually try to eat the fire works. We had to keep her inside so she wouldn't burn herself.

I personally can't wait for the fireworks. I think this is my favorite holiday.Besides the other wonderful suggestions I would also add corn on the cob and baked beans.

haha thats insane!  a firework eating dog.  baked beans is such a good idea!  I'm house sitting currently, and there is a box for a crock pot, but I can not seem to find the actual crock pot anywhere!  it stinks.
