I'm trying to find a good veg restaurant to take my omni DH and parents too. They are all open to vegetables, but they are not sure about meat substitutes, tofu, and other items that omnis usually don't eat. any suggestions?
I have no suggestions, but wanted to say my husband and I recently went to one of those veggie places where they have all the analog type "meats" and he was pleasantly surprised. He kept saying on the way there that he was scared LOL but we ordered a veggie lo mein and a veggie shrimp with vegetables. We both loved it. I really REALLY loved it and was dismayed to learn later that veggie shrimp is not a protein source. :(
Anyway your people may be nervous going in but you may be pleased in the end.
Oh... he found this place using www.yelp.com - you can search by type of place and area. Maybe do a search on "vegetarian" and "philadelphia." (I am in California so the place we went won't help you but the site is still good! They have reviews all over the US and I am sure there are lots for Philly and surrounding towns)
eta I hope a search will link up right - see if this helps you

That govinda's looks good to me. :) I am a total veggie shrimp nut now. I don't know why as I don't care for real shrimp but the fake stuff has a fun texture...
It's kind of far, but if you're near the mainline, SuTao (in Malvern) is a vegan buffet. Friggen amazing. Mostly Chinese food, lots of soy based products, but really satisfying and really GOOD, not just 'vegan food good' but plain old good. Most who come don't even care about the veganism or not, they just like the food.
My mom and I used to go just about every other week. Sooo good! Be sure to try to carob chip ice cream, it's to die for.
Thanks!
I actually work in Malvern. Why have I never heard of SuTao???? I am out of the loop apparently. Is it right on Rte. 30?
I do like the looks of Govinda's too. I think I'll try both at some point.
It's off of Route 30, yeah! They actually have a site now...http://www.sutaocafe.com/
Thanks!
kingdom of vegetarians!!! its in china town on race and 11th possible? soooo good.
OH yes...I've never been there but have heard good reviews. I recall Cherry street having something veggie too, but that was a few years ago...
I used to go to Singapore when I lived in Philly. Good stuff there.
Gianna's was also a favorite of mine.
ah giannas is really good! i would take your parents there if theyre um. neat. i think its kind of a punk hangout. i dont think my parents would particularly enjoy it simply because of the atmosphere. i like the atmosphere. anyways. its right near south street too which is fun.
I just read this post and since my best friend John and his wife are here, and are from that area, I asked them (John was born and raised in Malvern and his wife Wendy is from Westchester). They still go back up there a few times a year to visit family and friends and he said SuTao is great. He also just said that if you go into Philly check out "Horizons" on 7th Street. He's not hard core vegan like I am (they are veggies though), and he said he thinks that Horizons is totally vegan, and that he went there with some hard core Omni's that thought the place was great as well... (you would think after tasting how great vegan food is and can be, more would want to come over to "our side"). ;)
*update* I was curious so I went to Happy Cow to check out any info or reviews, and it got some good ones. Even some that said they thought it was the best vegan restaurant in the world..
