what's your favorite vegan dip recipe?

for dipping fresh veggies in? (as in a veggie tray dip)
I have a party coming up that I want to bring a veggie tray to, with a nice dip to go with it....

hummus!  we also make a 'sour cream' dip with tofutti sour cream and some packet of seasoning that i've never been able to find again.  it was good though!  what else...  not for veggies, but a black bean dip would be good for chips, as would a spinach artichoke dip (there's a good recipe on this site), oh and salsa.

can you tell i love dip?

I have one of those 2-bowled serving trays, and at all my grad school events my standard dish was bread/veggies/etc with white bean hummus in one bowl (like chickpea hummus but substituting great northern beans or cannelloni beans... I love the texture) and "za-za ganoush" in the other.

Za-za ganoush is from the desperation entertaining cookbook, an omni cookbook that DH owns. It's basically like baba ganoush (in that it has tahini, lemon juice, and garlic) but it's made with zucchini and a healthy dose of parsley. It's lighter and prettier than baba ganoush, it doesn't scare off eggplant-phobes (a sizeable proportion of the people I know, for some reason!), and it's not TOO much like hummus (which even I must admit is a drawback of baba ganoush).

If you look around I'm sure there are similar recipes out there. I'd share mine but that cookbook is hiding in storage somewhere :(

I'm also a spinach dip addict, and there's a great recipe for vegan spinach dip on this site (if you don't mind vegannaise)

ETA: spinach dip is not the same as spinach artichoke dip. I'm talking about the stuff you put in the big hollowed-out pumpernickel loaf--or is that just my family?

actually... I should have clarified.... I'm looking for something other than hummus, as I'm already making hummus pinwheels for the same party
here's the recipe btw, it looks really yummy, but I haven't tried it yet:

also, the dip should not contain any "vegan"  sour creams or creame cheese or mayonaise.... I know that vegan versions of these things exist, but we don't use them in our cooking ... so your favorite dip recipe that doesn't call for any of the above is what I'm looking for

the asparagus-spinach dip from vcon is super delicious and it gets its creaminess from ground cashews instead of any fake dairy stuff.  soooooooo good to dip veggies in or as a spread on a sandwich.

Do you mean only store-bought, or anything that simulates sour cream?  I use this recipe as a base for "sour cream" dips.

Otherwise, I make a really good bean dip.  It's ridiculously easy provided that you can lay your hands on the secret ingredient: Kuner's Southwest Refried Black Beans with Lime.  You mix a can of them with a slightly less than equal amount of chipotle salsa (to taste, really).  Everyone I've served it to has loved it.  Unfortunately, the Kuner's beans are not available everywhere.

My suggestion should still work--and I found the recipe! The book is still in storage, but I forgot that I put this in my recipe keeper as well:

1.5 lbs zucchini
3 large cloves garlic
.5 cup parsley (leaves only, chopped)
1/3 cup takini
1.5 lemons
1 tbsp olive oil
salt to taste (recommended minimum = 1/4 cup)

Make it like baba ganoush, basically. Cook the zucchini until mushy, drain off any excess water from the veggies, and then add everything else.

(ingredient list from Desperation Entertaining by Beverly Mills and Alicia Ross)

I also echo everyone here when I suggest playing around with more natural fake cheese/mayo. There's a cashew cheeze near me that is commercially available and delicious in a nacho-style dip; you could make your own too. I have made "mayo" from silken tofu.

yes.. I meant we only stay away from store-bought... thank you for pointing out that  sour cream recipe!!... so ok, now that I have "sour cream"... what dip can I make with it?....  I'm really new to the world of dips (both vegan and omni)... in my country we don't make dips... in fact I can't even translate the word...

that spinach dip with cashew butter sounds lovely, but we have cashew allergies in the family  :( ...  would a peanut butter or almond butter work just as well in that recipe?

It's actually not cashew butter, but raw cashews, ground into a fine powder. I'm guessing you could substitute for a different nut altogether. I don't know if it'll give the same 'creamy' effect though. You may want to try pine nuts, or a combination of pine nuts and oats, ground into a fine powder.

thanks 2ndbase... I'll give that a try...

yeah i think pine nuts would be perfect or even pecans would probably be great.

Shameless plug here: http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=7186.0
All my omni friends like this, even people who say they are scared of eggplant.

I was also going to suggest a simple pureed silken tofu creamy-type dip. My mom found a recipe, I believe in Joy of Cooking, believe it or not, that's basically just silken tofu, capers, salt and pepper, a bit of garlic, a bit of lemon juice, and some watercress or some other green herb. It might not be for everyone, but I love it and eat it with crudites often.

Ohhh I *heart* eggplant.  :)>>> This will be made within the week. I bought 7 small eggplants at the farmers market this week. I will NEVER buy store grocery again. Its a disservice to eggplant everywhere....at least where my grocery sells it.  Yuck!
