What is hemp and why did it make me sick?
I wasn't sure where to post this question, so I apologize if I am posting in the wrong place.
Yesterday I bought a bag of Nature's Coast Natural hemp powder protein, the ingredients say 100% hemp protein, so I mixed a shake of 3/4 cup silk lite chocolate soy milk, 1/2 frozen banana and 1 T of the hemp powder (the serving size is 2 T but I just needed a little shake to tide me over) and about an hour and half later I started feeling nauseous and stomach cramping and then I threw up. three times. It just came on all of a sudden. I've never had hemp protein before, for years I used different wheys and never had a problem. In the last couple months I decided to switch to vegetarian and I just finished a pack of a blend of brown rice and pea protein that was fine but I don't think is made anymore and since I am trying to eat mostly vegan I wanted a vegan protein powder.
Has anyone else had a problem with hemp making them sick?
Any suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Stacy
You didn't eat anything else? I just looked up the brand but I've never used this brand before or ever heard of it until now. In the description of the product I did find this:
but it says that it's 100% vegan. I've never heard of albumen coming from anything but eggs but maybe someone else can correct me?
It could either be the brand that made you sick or it was a freak thing. Did you try to contact the company and let them know what happened?
This is where I got the info: http://www.yournaturalvitaminstore.com/products/l0018.html
I haven't had a bad reaction to eating it, since I never have, but the one time I bought a lip balm with hemp oil in it I had a major reation on my face, swelling, blisters, etc. So no hemp for me.
I've actually had a reaction like that to Silk before, trying to use it in a shake. Maybe you're allergic to it, or maybe it was rancid, or maybe mixing it all together in a smoothie like I did.
I believe that quinoa contains the only source of vegetable albumen. The only one I know about, anyhow.

I had something similar happen! I bought a bag of hemp seeds, you know, the roasted ones that you can't grow. I wanted to try them because they said that they are so healthy. I added about a tablespoon of them to my oatmeal and got so so sick, nausea, throwing up all over the place.
Needless to say those seeds went in the garbage and I am never buying hemp seeds again!
It could be rancid oil, since hemp protein powder comes from the hemp seed, and grinding seeds make them prone to oxidation
I'm glad I'm not the only one this has happened to! I had the milk several days before with no problem, and I always smell it first, the only new change was the hemp powder. I guess I must be allergic to hemp, good to know, although it was an awful experience at the time. I am so glad I only used 1 T instead of 2!
You might not actually be allergic to it considering you had the milk and were fine. It sounds like your hemp powder may have been rancid.
Or a freak thing? I hate hemp milk, protein powders and oil, they taste so off to me. But I can totally do hemp seed.
