Looking for the perfect mayo
Does anybody make their own? I have recently become dissatisfied with all of my store bought options. Not sure why (tastes change?). I've decided the Spectrum light is flavorless goo. I'm bored with Naysoya. I have plenty of options to buy in my town, but meh....I'm not liking any.
I've made a batch of the cashew mayo from this site http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=6986.0 and it was OK. Not really mayo-ey, but a nice spread. I think I might have liked it more if I hadn't added sweetener (agave). I think the cashews are sweet enough. I've tried Bryanna's as well http://www.bryannaclarkgrogan.com/page/page/661699.htm and I wasn't wild about it either. I like the taste of tofu, but I could taste each ingredient individually and it was just....*smacks* not right.
Part of the issue is a lack of a Vitamix, but I would be willing to sacrifice texture for taste, if I could hit on the right combination. I've read through most of the comments in the mayo section for tips and am at a stand still.
Anybody have a recipe they love? Or a brand they swear by? Tis the season for potato salads and chickn salads (funny how crumbled tofu as a chicken sub is perfectly fine for me, but the mayo has to be just right).
FYH Vegenaise? It's the best.

That's one I haven't tried. All right, I'll give it a go. Thanks!
*you should add mayo to the sauce/dressing review thread. I went there first ;)

I actually have some mayos in the "dairy alt." review thread. ;) I'll copy them over.
Follow your heart-Vegenaise (veganaise)
-Love it! Fabulous. (AC)
-I don’t know if I’ve tried any other “mayonnaise”. But this stuff is awesome, so I’m sticking with it. (purpledancer)
-The best. Creamy and full o fat. =D (fb)
-ROCKS! I love it much more than regular mayo now! There is no comparison. (malevolence)
-I love Vegenaise! I think I have a true addiction to this stuff. It tastes just like I remember mayonnaise tasting. (This is for mayonnaise lovers, not Miracle Whip lovers.) (willwolf)
-delicious (THHF)
-wonderful - I normally use organic or expeller-pressed but I've tried the grapeseed kind too and couldn't taste a difference. My old roommate said it tasted more like Miracle Whip than mayonnaise but I think the only people who will be able to make a distinction are the ones who actually put mayonnaise on everything, but if you are like me and only use it in "tuna" or potato salad, you will probably not even realize it's not the real thing. (veganfilmjunkie)
Nasoya-Nayonaise
-I don't really mind this (it was the first vegan mayo I had), but it doesn't measure up to veganaise. (AC)
-It's ok. It's more sour than vegenaise... not a huge fan. (fb)
-I agree with ac's review of this (THHF)
-one of the nastiest things I have ever put in my mouth and left an awful aftertaste that took more than just a drink to get rid of. It was expensive, and normally I ALWAYS ALWAYS try to think of a way to use up something I paid for, even if I have to hide it one tablespoon at a time in several smoothies - but I threw the entire brand-new jar away. This is a huge deal for me, especially in my current financial situation. (veganfilmjunkie)
Nasoya-Nayonaise fat free
-errmmm, well, this actually resembles real mayo (as opposed to Miracle whip) at first glance, but the taste is kinda funny. It's not great by itself on a sandwich, but it makes a darn good base for salad dressing. I used it for chickpea salad dressing, and it was great. (CW)
Spectrum-egg-less mayonnaise
-Good texture and flavor! I don't use mayo on sandwiches, but it's good for chickpea salad and whatnot, and I've made a nice aioli by mixing in other ingredients like roasted garlic. (Sharway)
Trader Joe's-Reduced fat mayo
- it has a bit of ''tang'' but i like it. i use it on sandwiches, wraps, and inchickpea salad. its also very inexspensive. (brooke)
-It suffices; it's nice that it's lower in fat, but that also means it's way less creamy than vegenaise. Nice to have a less-indulgent, cheaper option out there. (fb)

Ahhh, sorry....all in the way you look at it, I suppose. Thanks again.
PS, I would like to hear comments on any homemade versions, if anyone has any..
Thanks!
heck yeah.....veganaise is the BEST! Its pretty $ though. I use the cheaper stuff (I found Spectrum at Amazing savings for 1.49) when I'm mixing it in stuff like potato salad.
I would love a homemade version too, since the V costs like 10 for a large jar.
I've never bought a vegan mayonaise a) because I don't exactly like mayonaise b) because I don't think it's possible in this country c) because even if it was, I don't think I could justify the cost, from what I've heard.
I have, however, made homemade vegan aioli, which is kind of like a nicer, garlicier version of mayonaise. Unfortunately though, last time I went to make it, I couldn't find my killer recipe, and the one I made came out way too oily and separates if you leave it out of the fridge for more than a few minutes. Oops.
So yeah, that was unhelpful, sorry.
But if I figure out my aioli recipe, I'll try to post that for you, in an attempt to be at least slightly helpful.
I haven't tried this, so I can't vouch for it, but here's a recipe:
http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2008/08/homemade-vegan-mayo.html
(I would have to cut back on the sugar and vinegar, because I detest Miracle Whip.)
Nayonaise sucks in comparison to Vegenaise. Vegenaise is the greatest. :)>>>
I just bought a jar of Trader Joe's reduced fat mayo to try, since it's much cheaper. (Haven't tried it yet, because I have a whole jar of Vegenaise to get through first.) I'm hoping my husband will like it. He doesn't eat my Vegenaise because it's expensive; so he just keeps buying the eggy kind. :(
I don't really have much to add. I usually buy vegenaise with the blue top, but last week we started carrying a version with a yellow top. It is reduced fat made from flax and olive oil. It was on sale for 6.99, cuz it's new (and I get a 25% discount :P) I haven't tasted it, but I'm pretty excited about it. Anyone else heard of/tried it?
I really just wanted to post because I'm so happy to see Nutdragon! I was going to put your name in the "People we miss" thread a couple days ago, but I forgot. ha. It's good to "see" you back! :)
Vegenaise is the only mayo I will eat. And I freakin' LOVE that stuff. Heaven in a jar!

I just bought my first jar of TJ's reduced fat mayo, simply because my fridge crapped out and I had to throw out my Vegenaise, and since I needed some and TJ's doesn't carry Vegenaise, I gave it a shot...and I must say, I can't detect much if any difference in taste or texture compared to Vegenaise. It even passed the omni test LOL I made my Main Dish Delish Summer Pasta Salad for the 4th and served it to a bunch of picky omni family members and everybody liked the salad so the TJ's mayo passed the test. AND the fact that it is like 1/3 of the price AND the fact that it can be purchased and stored in the pantry are huge plusses in my book!
I would love a homemade version too, since the V costs like 10 for a large jar.
This would be why it hasn't found its way into my fridge. Let me know if you ever find it at AS.

That's the one option I don't have here. There have been rumors for a TJ's in Asheville, but no confirmation, yet.

Thanks! I've missed you guys (although I do lurk occasionally). We have been sooooo freaking busy. The building industry didn't die off for those of us building green. After a very scary winter (horrifying), biz picked up in March and has been uncontrollable. It's hard to turn down work after going without for 3 months. Cooking has taken a back seat to life, but I'm officially sick of Amy's burritos and PB&J.
We just finished a cafe in town that is Asheville's first Certified Green Restaurant. I'm working on getting it published (which would be a first for our little firm *everyone please cross their fingers*) I'll post pix on my profile and update in a little while.
Sorry I missed you on your last trip. Steffuny did my nose, too, years ago. Love her dimples! ;)b

There are lots of really cool green products in this place. The bar is kirei board (sorghum grass).
I would love a homemade version too, since the V costs like 10 for a large jar.
It's like $6 for a large jar of the regular stuff here. $8 for the grapeseed, $9 for the organic one.

I buy it from the bulk dept! It's amazing. I forget what the price/lb is..like 3-4, I dunno.
Trader Joes reduce fat Mayo is wonderful. I've been blending my own with tofu. Im trying to match it in flavor. its good but missing the tartness of TJ. I put tofu lemon juice paprika tumeric garlic powder onion powder a bit of olive oil and brags. blend till very smooth.
I just bought the TJ reduced fat Mayo and must say I am not overly impressed. Sure it was $3 for a huge jar but it doesnt have the creaminess I want. Its almost thin and translucent.
I put it on potato salad and it tasted creamy and fine, but kind of a clear color to it once blended in. Odd. I guess its a good summer buy to use in salads but I will go back to my Veganaise soon as its out.
I didn't like the TJ's accidentally vegan mayo, either. I tried it at my aunt and uncle's house, and am glad I've never taken a chance on it. I LOVE Vegenaise and will never give it up. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but it's worth it.
I have to go with FYH Veganese, just bought it for the first time last week and I really do enjoy it!
Only tried the Spectrum one before, it was OK... didn't like it enough to try it again.
I make this salad dressing with Soy Yogart (love my probiotics) Tamari, German Mustard, Apple cider vivegar(only vinegar I use...it's in the mustard too) fresh pulverised garlic and some oregano and black pepper oh yea and some Flax seed oil....very yummy
Might pass for mayo
That sounds good. I use silken tofu. and flax seed oil. and lots of spices. blend till smooth. I have been playing with the spices. mustard paprika garlic and lemon is the predominate flavors Ive liked so far. Im going to try yours! thanks for sharing
I make my mayo from scratch, using this recipe and tweaking it according my taste (which means I use 1/2 cup of soymilk plus and vinegar instead of lemon juice and a bit more than asked for, also a bit more mustard... and occasionally some garlic, too)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tGzh4bPBdI&feature=PlayList&p=9F85510E3E8AD6C4&index=6
you must watch out for the kind of milk you use, the first time I made it with Alpro Soja light which is sweetened and salted... big mistake *ick* now I only use soymilk without added sugar and salt or homemade soymilk (I guess you could make this mayo using any kind of milk alternative, but I haven't tried it yet, only with a mix of rice and soy milk and that did fine)
it's easy, fast, - and cheaper than store-bought mayo :)
