Have you ever had vegan clam chowder?

Hi guys,

For awhile now I have been fondly thinking of a chowder I used to make many years ago before being veg*n.  gosh, it was good...

Just wondered if you guys have ever tried anything vegan that is supposed to taste like clam chowder.  I am on a mission to re-create that fantastic dish from days gone by.

I searched online and found a couple of vegan versions, but nothing that is exactly like what I am looking for.  So, I have gathered the ingredients I feel are necessary to whip it up. Wish me luck in the kitch!

ooh good luck!

it's so weird - i don't think i ever ate clam chowder as an omni, but for some reason a vegan version sounds delicious!

Ask, and you shall receive.  Bryanna Clark Grogan's very own recipe for both types of chowder!

Now, I have yet to try these recipes but I so want to eat the creamy white kind.  mmmmmm

(And vegan jellyfish was ok but a bit weird for me!  The cabbage was yummy though.)

I think Taro in larger chunks and made rubbery would be a great substitute for clam.  ahah Not that i know how to do that!

Oyster mushrooms should be fine though.  They have that squeaky tooth to em.

Thanks for the link Cali!

I am definitely going for the creamy "New England" style chowder.  In Bryanna's version she used Oyster mushrooms and Dulse to get the ocean-y flavor.  I already have those on hand to use in mine so I think I am on the right track.  Cool. I will try to whip this out this weekend and let you guys know if its good!

You are very welcome!

Let us know how it turns out.  I was leery of trying it as it looked so watery in the photo, but I be that can be fixed with some judicious blending of potato & soy milk.  mmm  I already have a soup planned for this week but I am thinking maybe this weekend.  With some crusty sourdough?  nom nom nom

Is there ANYTHING that woman doesn't do?! Amazing.

Never had vegan clam chowder, but I did have corn chowder made with dulse that was KILLER. One of my first really fabulous vegan dishes back in the mid-90s, one that my family requested over and over again.

Slight tangent, but I saw applewood smoked dulse recently, and I still can't stop my mouth from watering just thinking about it. Mmmmmm.

Thanks for the link Cali!  I'm definitely going to have to try out the Manhattan version, I never did like the creamy clam chowder when I was an omni.

oh look what i found, kinda pricey, but if you know it exists then maybe you can find it somewhere...I know oysters are not the same and clams, but...maybe the taste is similar... I also rally like the idea of mushrooms...I'll admit that clam chowder was a comfort food to me growing up...might be nice to try some...I seem to recall someone put kelp into vegan seafoods to make it taste more "fishy" I might have read that on the tunafish reviews...

I have been experimenting with creating this recipe.  I haven't actually tried any of the other vegan recipes that were listed here....I just kinda whipped it up by thinking about what I remember making in my omni days.

I have made it twice so far.  The first attempt was very "clammy" but I was not thrilled with the cream sauce.  So, I started over today with an entirely different approach to the "cream".  I must say that I thought it was quite good and even fooled some omnis....however, I don't know what you guys will think.  I will type it up and post it on here.  If anyone is feeling brave you can try it....

Neat VeganSapien!

I actually followed Bryanna's recipe almost exactly but discovered my Dulse powder was waaay more 'sea' than flakes would be so it was a bit over powering.  That and I despise oyster mushrooms.  Shitake are as out slimy / chewy as I can get without the gross out factor.

Overall, it was tasty.  I fed it to three omni's and they liked it just fine.

Turtle Island Foods (the makers of tofurkey) have a recipe in their tempeh section for a linguini with clam sauce kind of thing that uses tempeh.  I haven't made it because I don't think my kids would like it but the note says it the recipe won first place in their tempeh contest (you really gotta wonder how many entries there were).  Anyway, the recipe looks very good and uses Old Bay seasoning, which probably gives it some of the fishy flavoring.

Since everyone is linking, here is the link:  http://www.tofurkey.com/recipes/tempeh_calm.htm

Here is the recipe I put together.  I'd love to hear if any of you try it!

Vegan Clam Chowder

Ingredients:
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
1/4 cup dulse flakes
1 cup hot water
1 tsp sea salt
1 1/2 cups oyster mushrooms,  chopped

1 large sweet onion, chopped
2 Tbs vegan margarine
4 cups potatoes, cubed small
3 carrots, sliced
3 celery, sliced
1 tsp sea salt

2 - 15oz cans cannellini beans, undrained
1 cup soymilk
3 Tbs margarine
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp pepper

Splash of red wine vinegar.

Directions:

1) Mix first five ingredients in glass bowl.  Nuke 3 mins and let stand.
2) Saute onion in margarine over medium heat while you chop remaining veggies.
3) Add potatoes, carrots, and celery.  Saute five minutes.
4) Pour mushroom mixture into pot with veggies.  Add enough water to almost cover (about 1 cup).  Simmer until tender.
5) In processor or blender, add beans, soymilk, margarine, salt and pepper.  Blend several minutes until very smooth.
6) Add bean mixture to veggies, heat thru 5-10 more minutes.  Season with red wine vinegar and more salt and pepper if you like.
7) Serve with vegan soup crackers.  Enjoy!
