NVR: Cat with kidney failure question...again. Help!

So, my mom has been feeding their oldest cat, Lacie (who is 12 and is in the beginning stages of kidney failure), Hill's Prescription Diet k/d. She has also been feeding this to their younger cats (without kidney failure) this food because she 1) doesn't want to take the time to feed them separately, and 2) she thinks it will "prevent" the others from developing kidney problems even though I told her the others need HIGH protein food, but she'll only listen to what she wants to hear sometimes  :-\.

What I need answered is what can she feed Lacie besides the k/d food? She doesn't want to buy it anymore because the vet just jacked the price up and I don't want her to buy it because it's crappy food (contains corn, chicken by-products, etc.) I know that she will not cook for Lacie, so that option is out (she doesn't even want to take the time to feed them separately--there is NO WAY she will cook). Any suggestions for high quality, lower protein (and phosphorus) food? I've been searching online for hours and called a holistic vet in town only to be told about Hill's Prescription Diet, Purina Prescription Diet, and Eukanuba Prescription Diet--all foods I don't want Lacie and the other cats eating.  :(

Yeah...Hill's K/D is a HORRIBLE pet food.....f*cking corn in cat food is just SO wrong! >:(
I'll email my vet in Florida right now and ask her what she recommends.....I'll post her response for you once received......

Awesome, thanks. I was so disappointed by that holistic vet I called--I was not expecting to get such a response. Apparently "holistic" means something different to her  :-\

kbuettne,

Deneen just got my email and called me (b/c she was on her way to the airport to catch a flight and had no time to type a reply).....

Here's what she said:
Without actually seeing any test results to know how far along Lacie is with kidney failure....(she was curious as to what tests were run...etc.)...she said the best thing for Lacie would be to keep her on a "wet" diet....no Kibble!!! (which...as you know... is what SD/KD is). She said to have your mom give her some Natures Variety (or a similar premium brand) canned food. AS she explained...she needs the extra fluids....kibble is way too dry for her...and as we all know most cats drink very little water...If she (Lacie) is really in kidney failure....she would STILL keep her on the NV and have her take a kidney glandular...as well as an immune system boost/support glandular....

I do trust her advice....she's been so right about problems I've described to her before over the phone before (though with lots more info then I had to give her about Lacie...like faxes of tests...results..etc...)..... but as she added with caution...without personally seeing any test results on Lacie....it's hard for her to know just how far along her kidney problem might be (if there really is one)......as she and I also both agreed....it could just be a case of a vet pushing some of the junk/fast food they sell to make a few extra bucks with each visit to their office.....

My questions.....what actual symptoms does Lacie show of possible kidney failure? What tests were run? What do the test results say...if you have that...I'll be glad to forward them to her....feel free to email me all of that info so I can forward them to her.

Good Luck for Lacie!
