kitty litter
I used to use a lightly scented kitty litter. A couple of months ago, the store was out, so I ended up with some really perfumed litter. The scent got embedded in his fur, so he stunk of chemical flowers. Ewww...
I realized that since cats wash themselves, all of this time I was forcing my cat to lick perfume. :-X
In the past, I had tried some of the more natural brands (like the ?buckwheat? hulls and ground up pine something), but my cat never liked them even after months of forced use, so I went back to clumping kitty litter. I now use Arm & Hammer unscented. I'm beginning to associate scented kitty litter with animal cruelty, but I don't have a lot of ideas about what else to use. I've thought about just digging some of the dirt up from outside (it's not fertilized or anything).
What do you use?
I've got him back on litter now, because he wasn't consistent with the poops (he was perfect with peeing though).
Maybe he didn't like the splashback :P
I thought that at first...but I don't think that was it. He was just stubborn. He would automatically do it correctly if I was in the apartment...and I would praise him and even give him a treat...
BUT if I wasn't there...he would poop right next to the toilet. It's like he was making the effort to sort of do it correctly, but still rebelling. lol.

Actually, if you praise them EVERY time this is exactly what will happen.
He's not rebelling. He just knows if you aren't there, he's not going to get anything so why bother. Animals are smart and clever - never forget that. ;)
IF you use "rewards", do so only 60% of the time. Never 100%.

I use the Feline Pine pellets not the clumping. I also put the litter pan into a trash bag before adding litter and the top piece. This way when I change the litter I simply undo the plastic top guard and turn the bag inside out off the pan. The pan stays clean and dirty litter is all removed in one fell swoop.
Since reading this post a while back, I've switched to Swheat Scoop. Works well so far.
Also, thanks K2 for the tip on "oiling" the litter box. That has really made things a bit easier for me while scooping.
My husband tried to train our kitty to poop in the toilet. Bunny (our kitty) wasn't having it. He ended up pooping/peeing everywhere else in the house, ruining many things, and creating lots of messes to clean up. When Bunny finally got his litter box back, he was so ecstatic. He sat in there a looong time before he came out again. I felt so bad for the little guy.
(Please don't ask why our male cat is named Bunny. :D I didn't name him.)
