What DVD are you watching lately?

I have BBC's Persuasion on, but I can't really get into. I've heard thought that BBC's Sense & Sensibility is good. Of course I"ve watched the Ang Lee Emma Thompson version which is superb... I may get it this week to see  :P

on my quest to watching the AFI top 100, I watched The Apartment last night.

Treasure of the Sierra Madre is my personal fav. Also love The Maltese Falcon and The African Queen :)

Treasure of the Sierra Madre is the only Bogart movie I haven't watched all of, because he is toooo good at crazy. I find it unsettling. (Yeah, I'm weird.)

No, thank you, base...having descended into madness myself once, I have no desire to watch Bogey do it convincingly.

I just scored a 5-pack of Austen and Bronte-based films. About to chill out with Mansfield Park, Jane Eyre, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Wuthering Heights is in there to but I reckon nowt to it.

Just finished watching Jennifer's Body (2009) for my essay in a literary/film analysis class. When I was younger I used to love horror films, but over the past few years my tolerance level for the gore and violence has gone way down. I cringed a few times in this one, but more than anything I laughed a lot. This definitely isn't your typical horror film. The director obviously had a message in mind, and she pardoied a lot of the steroetypical horror film tropes. I'd say it's worth watching, especially if you have any interest in feminism. Nothing like watching a flesh-eating female seek out her revenge on all of  mankind.

We  don't watch a lot of DVDs, as we tend to watch the BBC here on cable in Holland. Most Dutch shows drive me nuts and the BBC does great dramas, comedies, and documentaries. I totally heart the BBC.

I did finally get to see Food Inc recently. I want to see The Cove, but I know I can't handle it.

With my 3 year old, we tend to watch one DVD a lot - my copy of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". She just loves "the dancing movie" as she calls it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I used to love horror films, especially zombie movies. However, I'm getting to where I am having a hard time stomaching them anymore. I still like them, but now I'm leaning more toward the less violent ones, or at least the less gruesome ones. I loved Zombieland and I like Shaun of the Dead, too. Sooo, I'm guessing Jennifer's Body would be a hit, because I enjoy when movies will break the 4th wall and make fun of themselves. Good recommendation!

I watched Up in the Air the other night, and what can I say? George Clooney. That is all.  ;)b

I used to enjoy very horror movies, but nowadays, what is now sort of the "norm" for horror movie is tortune porn such as Saw (I haven't dared watch any of the movies yet), Hostel (I walked out of the movie), etc. I just don't like watching torture scenes even though I know it's just a movie. I don't know if I died while being tortured in a previous life, but I can't stomach the idea, therefore, I don't watch them. It's okay though, everybody's got their own tastes.

I haven't seen Jennifer's Body yet, but I've seen Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, and I really liked those movies. Like you said, I like the fact that they definitely do not take themselves so seriously.

On another note, I just watched Everything Is Illuminated. What a beautiful story, it just captures comedy and drama so well. I haven't read the novel yet, but it's on my to do list.

American horror is not where it's at. I do enjoy gore, though so the Saw movies really hit the spot (there isn't any sex in them, and little to no nudity if my memory serves me right). Foreign horror is definitely what's up. I love Japanese, French, Italian, etc stuff.

Watch these:

Them
Inside
Let The Right One In
REC
Infection

So I'm curious... is it the horror movie genre that has changed or something in us? I always attributed it to me growing older and sort of changing as a person, but maybe the content of the horror genre itself has changed. What do y'all think?

Something in the makers has indeed changed, and that's what has changed the genre. I notice this in detective fiction, too. The emphasis is no longer on the puzzle, the who did it and why. Now it's all about how they did it--the condition of the cadaver, and the technical details. Back in the 80's, "psychological thrillers" were the exception. Now they are the norm. Instead of working with the tried and true formulas, they feel they have to push the envelope to greater and greater extremes.

SB - By Torture porn, I didn't necessarily mean nudity or sex with violence, I just meant the emphasis on the torture scenes which makes me, personally, uncomfortable. What can I say, I'm a wuss.  ;D But, I don't think these movies are necessary a bad thing, it's another art form amongst others. A lot of my friends are into this.

It just reminds me when I took the bus from Panama City to San José, in Costa Rica. They said that they were going to put a movie and boy, wow. They played this thai horror film which was very gory. Let's just say it starts with quite a bang, I had to start laughing, because of all things you expect to see in public transport is that kind of film  :). When you think that on my flight back, they showed Up, Bride Wars and several episodes of Big Bang Theory.  ;D Anyways, I had to watch because I practically had no choice as the volume was very loud. Let's just say it was confusing, a thai movie with spanish subtitles, but according to wikipedia, I seem to have understood the basis of the story. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_of_the_Devil

We just watched Peaceable Kingdom. It gives you a lot to think about and it's great to show anyone interested in going vegan. I see my husband's been eating a lot less non-vegan food since he watched it!!
