I just read this article:

That's an awesome thing to do but I couldn't do that! What about y'all? Could you be that altruistic?
what a nice article!! i dont know if i could ever do that. wow. that takes a lot of courage.
ive totally thought about doing this - i never realized that they pay for all your medical expenses. i dont have insurance and i figured itd be so crazy expensive. i wanna check out that site now!

I've totally thought about that too. I've also wanted to look into either donating my eggs. I think that would be a nice thing to do and they even pay you for that!
im too old to do the egg thing......... ::)
you're too old...? What's the age limit?
I've been toying around with the idea of joining the marrow registry (I already donate blood). I hear it's not nearly as painful as it sounds, and it's not like donating a kidney (where I fear one day I'll need it!). One can donate marrow again and again and again...
... my ass hurts just thinking about it.
all the egg donor ads ive seen have an age range that tops out around 29.. im not into the egg idea anyway.. i don't really like the idea of anyone else having a kid with my eggs. i may not ever have one but it's weird to me to think about if i did, it having mystery siblings out there. plus, there are plenty of kids that could be adopted so my eggs arent really necessary.
i've been looking at that donors website for like 2 hours.. isnt bone marrow donation a really invasive surgery? like they gotta dig into your bones right?
If Jodie Picoult is to be believed, then it's just a long needle into the iliac crest. So it's a bit sore, but not particularly invasive.

yeah that's how they did it on House last night. ;D

I can't donate any eggs either.
:-\
I wouldn't be able to donate a kidney. I'm fairly certain I'm going to need them both. My blood's not good enough to donate. My genetics aren't that great, given that any children I ever have would have a1/4 chance of diabetes. Makes me feel kinda bad.
Woooow... props to her, man, that's amazing. I'm a firm believer in organ donation - one of the most amazing people in my life was given ten more years by a heart transplant. That's article is a happy start to my day :-)

My mom made the same argument but that would just mean more cool people in the world 8-) :D
ha - even so.. my eggs have been deemed past their prime for public use.
Man, I didn't know the age limit was so low!
Bone marrow donation is supposed to leave you with a sore hip for a few days, but the actual procedure is done under local anesthesia - you shouldn't (hmm...) feel anything apparently. And yeah, they poke your bones. Hence the residual pain.
Just the idea of something going into your bone sounds excruciating. I'm sure having an organ out is no picnic but the bones just sound more painful to me. I just imagine the sound of a needle scratching against bone! :o I know im a bit morbid.
god that site was SAD! i would love to do something like that, but like someone else said, i would just be afraid that i might need the other one one day...or what if my daughter needed one and i could have given her mine but i gave it to someone else?? i just don't know....it's a really nice notion, but i don't know if i could do it....
i read that if you donate and end up needing one someday you get moved to the front of the list.

yeah, but there's still the matter of finding an actual match. Not an easy matter.

especially if everyone holds on to their kidneys just in case they might need them.. ive been looking through that donor site and it makes me wonder what kind of criteria people have for who theyd donate to.. (although that could really be a whole new thread on its own)

Haha, maybe you could repo your old one. :) I'm sorry that was kinda mean but it would be a definite match.
