I have seen all of these movies, but I'm REALLY bad with the names of the actors from that era. I can only name some of the super easy ones.

I'm old.  ;D I'm also agoraphobic...I don't get out much... ::) *exaggerating--slightly...*
And my DVD collection isn't just a bunch of movies--those people are my friends. And some of them are downright family!

I seldom lend my films to Spanish people because they really don't seem to understand that they have to give them back, and that I'm upset if they don't. I have lent 2 Lit-related films to 2 handpicked students, with this proviso: "If you damage it, lose it or don't give it back, I'll have to kill you."

I was not kidding.

(You notice I totally tanked on films made after about 1950. Because for years, Spanish TV never showed anything made after that date. And my mother "didn't hold with" the cinema when I was growing up in the 70s).

The sad part was going into a video store in Chicago, for heaven's sake, in about 1992, and asking if they had any Bogart films for sale. The pimply young man in charge had. no. idea. who Bogey was!!!

He should have been fired. Best bogey film? Treasure of the Sierra Madre, then The Maltese Falcon. thoughts?

I'd have to see them again to say... it's been a while. But I have to admit, Casablanca is near and dear to my heart.

I'm not a big fan of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.  For me, it's probably The Maltese Falcon (great cast overall), but then there's also The African Queen and, as Savvyidler points out, Key Largo...
And I have a real soft spot for a silly one called We're No Angels (with Aldo Ray and Peter Ustinov).

I need to have a Bogey marathon. Seriously. The guy's awesome.

The Director's Cut of The Big Sleep...because they give you the 20 min they cut out of it, which also made the finished movie make no sense. I love the phone conversation when Bacall calls the cops and then they pretend the cops called them!

And of course, To Have and Have Not. Most famous Bogey dialogue of all time with Lauren Bacall.
"You know how to whistle, doncha Steve? You just put your lips together and...blow."

I really don't care for Sierra Madre just because he did such a great job of depicting the descent into madness...I've been close enough to madness myself to find it exquisitely uncomfortable. BTW his first wife, Mary, was a violent alcoholic so he probably learned a lot about madness firsthand.

Sierra Madre is fantastic. One of my all-time favorites, period.

Laura's answers are correct.  Any other guesses, or have I stumped you all?  ;)

Invisible Man: Claude Rains
The Hustler: Paul Newman
The Apartment: Jack Lemmon, I think--but I'm probably wrong.

I'd get more of these if I asked DH, because I know I know them, but can't think of them, but that's cheating.
