Fly-bys on the board...

Has anyone noticed... that every once in awhile our little vegweb board seems to get... well how to put this... gung-ho new members who mention that they "have been vegan for X years" in every post... and the poster replies to posts but never knows any of the original posters background and says something totally "off"... like, "Try nutritional yeast!" and proceeds to explain exactly what it is to another long time vegan... and they are a little... I dunno... uppity... but then in a week or two they disappear never to be heard from again...
Does this makes sense?

Anyway, maybe I'm mean, but I'm glad those kind of people don't stick around and just sort of fly-by...

I'm proud of vegwebbers that we don't harbor and environment for that kind of stuff but aren't cliqueish and accept new people and get to know them. Yay for us!

5.  I DARE NOT post my profession at this point

OK, well that will only force us to guess then, Let me start........................

Defense Attorney?

teehee!  That's exactly what I was thinking!  8)

I wrote my last post with my tongue so firmly planted in my cheek I think it might be stuck there.

Doooooood!  I didn't think of that!  I work deal with attorneys.  But, here's the hole in your theory - attorneys don't use words precisely, they like obtuse statements that allow for backtracking and wiggle room.

Maybe she designs crossword puzzles.  :D

I must say something here.  Dave was kind to me, got to know me outside the board, and has been a great guy all around EVEN when I had, like, 10 posts.  I've had lots of wave hello's from friendly vegwebbers, including one from larabs after I hadn't posted in a while, and an email from Dave when I hadn't posted in a bit- which made me really feel touched, that people noticed.  I've gotten some excellent advice on some real issues, like what to eat for ED recovery, what to take a sick friend, etc.

I like to read often but only post when I feel like it, which lately has been rare, and yet I still feel welcome and accepted.

This is a really depressing time in my life and I don't know you all in real life, but I am thankful for those who make the effort to make a connection.  It means a lot.

Hey, Stars.  I just wanted to let you know that the other day some people were asking about you in the chat room.  Hope you're well.  :)

ohhhh! I love this board...I didn't notice this topic was getting so FISTY! ;)

LADYDRAGONFLY!!! I love you and I do think your posts are valuable. I'm sad that you feel ignored when you post- know that I always read them and like em too!

DAVEDRUM :D  :D  :D  :D oh thats all I can say ::)

CLIQUISH!? honestly people this is one of the LEAST cliquish boards I ve ever visited! The only reason someone could think that is if they don't post anything and assume they are being ignore from not posting...I started posting her in like April, new vegan. Probally asked questions y'all already knew but i got the answers and shared my disjointed thoughts when I had them...I even left another, no so friendly board when i found this one cause y'all are just so great!

Also, I love how we can disagree and "confront" one another but get over it! People here tend to lose grudges quickly enough.

Wow...it took me (like) 2 days to catch up with this post.  I've read everyone else's responses, so I know I might be parroting bits and pieces from other people, but this is how I feel about it:

I think it is easy to view this board as cliquish (even though I don't).  I go through periods of time where I post a lot and then a little (if any at all).  If one doesn't participate it is easy to feel left out.  I do this in my real life sometimes.  I chalk it up to different personalities.  I do follow quite a few threads, but then there are some that pop up that just annoy the he!! out of me.  I ignore those because if I didn't I would be the capital B witch that LadyD is claiming to be, but have never found her.  Also, Davedrum....I find your passion inspiring, even if I don't agree with everything.  Most people on this board have a lot of information to offer up and I am glad to accept certain things and dismiss just as many.

I, too, feel like this is a coffeshop of sorts for me....even if I just play the voyeur.  So, thanks to everyone who posts regularly.  I feel more in touch with people when I peek into the parts of your lives you are willing to share....even if I'm not that type of person all the time.

Clique is such a horrible word, it's a messageboard full of people (some of which) have spent a long time here and have gotten to know others very well...it would be weird if everyone didn't know a little about each other.  I'm totally aware of my overwhelming noob-ness, but I've been to a messageboard or two and have been accused of doing the "clique-y" thing, this is nothing like it.
I wouldn't hesitate to ask a question, but only after researching that the question hasn't been asked a million times before

That being said I still don't understand why explaining nutritional yeast is a bad thing, but I'm just going to count on that I missed something

As a newbie, it wouldn't even strike me to see if the question had been asked before.  I am not a newbie but still ask questions that have been asked a million times.  I frequent a couple of travel boards and the same questions get asked time and time again.  The people on the board that  love the places in question, are always happy to answer it again for the new people.  When I started on boards, I had to ask what LOL and BTW were.  I even had to think hard about BF and DH.  Who knew it was Boyfriend and Darling Husband. Someone could have been saying I love my breakfast food or drinking habit.  :)

New people should always feel welcome.  The more they post, the more they get to know some people and the more the regulars get to know them.

The only reason I finally understand math was I had a compassionate and understanding teacher in grade nine that made sure we all knew that no question was stupid.  He taught a class of people that needed extra help.  Our class beat 97% of the province in the provincial exams that year.

Another great reason to have subject lines.  If you know what the subject is and you have no interest, don't read it.

I believe the reason all of these boards exist is a place where you can go, to a subject or cause you are interested or believe in to find answers and help and to offer your perspective.  The friendships just end up happening over time.

I often post that we are like one big family with a common goal.  But like all dysfunctional families, we agree, we disagree, we fight, we make up, we move on, we think some are odd, we think others are more odd.  We think we are odd.  Maybe I shouldn't word it like we are a big family but instead a community or a village with a base goal.

Anyway, I was just agreeing with your post except I don't research the topic first.  I just ask the question and hope someone will answer it.  As well, even if a topic has been discussed before, it seems someone always has new insight to add.

I'm sort of a fly-by I guess.  :)  I'd been reading vegweb from time to time for a year or so off and on just to find recipes, but didn't use the forums. Then I was looking something up and saw a thread of baypuppy's and thought it was great and wanted to join in.

Then I posted madly for a couple weeks and probably acted like a know-it-all,  ???  and then a bunch of junk is going on in my real life and I sort of lost interest in posting a lot so took down my profile. But I still lurk sometimes and read every once in a while.

I have to say I think you're all great and that this is one of the friendliest and most welcoming boards I've ever seen on the internet. So I hope I'm not a fly-by in a bad way,.. I just have too much going on and it didn't has to do with the board that I stopped spending time on here.

OK... I just have to clarify... the fly-by thing... CEPHI nailed it on the head with that "joke post" (below) especially with the "tl;dr" = "too long; didn't read" and taking the fact that I simply mentioned "nutritional yeast" in my original post and so she explained what it was "promising" I'd like it... *note i didn't say I hadn't ever tried it!*  THAT was the hilarious fly by random posting stuff I was talking about.
MY original post had nothing to do with newbies or newbie questions, that was a tanget that we went off on. Suffice it to say if you're lurking, reading this post or posting on it you are NOT the fly-byers that I meant. They are the ones who haven't taken the time to read or get to know anyone.

Original post was tl;dr but I noticed you mentioned nutritional yeast and it is soooo good!  I've been using it since I went vegan a year and a half ago!  It's kind of like this cheesy powdery stuff, I put it in burritos and sprinkle it on my spaghetti! Try it Jenniferhughes, I promise you'll like it!  Omg, bye!

Thanks JH for the thread. When I come back I will try to figure out how to do a profile.

Yay!!! I love when people do profiles! At least a little bit of one! I really do think it helps to be able to look at someone's profile when reading their post and say, "oh yeah, she has 2 cats!" "oh yeah, she is from Montana!" that kind of stuff!

5.  I DARE NOT post my profession at this point, but I will say I pay attention to words and tend to use them precisely when I write my posts, even though I do seem to ramble on.  It gives my posts less of a warm fuzzy tone, and I do think that it leads to a bit of misinterpreting my intentions.

Well I'm glad you mentioned the precise word use thing.... that clarifies a lot! I was beginning to think maybe you worked in a meat packing plant or something!!  ;)
Have a nice vacation!

Phew! I was starting to think it was me..... ::)
One of the last posts I made a month ago was to a cheese addicted gal and I mentioned Nutritional Yeast!  I've been a member since 2004 so I hope that's OK.... ;D

I haven't posted in a few weeks, and haven't been keeping up. I just felt the need for a break, but now that I am checking in I see all these awesome topics I have missed out on!

For a while I was thinking that something was wrong with my computer.....(like no one could see my posts or something) my posts were not being responded to, and talked over like I didn't just mention the same thing 5 minutes earlier. That's when I decided I needed a break!

I just got a new job and lots of good changes here....so maybe I will be in a better place to post and not feel sorry for myself.  ha ha!

Welcome back.

Since you're here - does 2ants mean "truant"?  I'm so badass I'm not checking past posts.  8)

I've had this happen in personal conversation as  well as on 2 chat groups I belong to. I guess we're just not "noisy" enough or something. In my case I was taught to be very unassuming and polite...we're talking living, breathing wallpaper!  ;) I do better these days but yes, my "pearls of wisdom" often go ignored. I guess I'm just "one of the least of these." Never mind, I know I'm cool...  ;D ;D

To everybody who thinks their posts are being ignored.   They're not.  I've felt that way sometimes, but then I thought about how I read posts.  There are posts that I especially like, but I don't necessarily respond to them.  I assume I'm welcome and that people read what I say and I will until I'm directly told I'm not welcome and to shut up.  Since that hasn't happened since I started posting in March (and even though during most of that time I've been sick and morose), I figure I'm good to go.  When we share we all get to know a little more about each other.  It's just that people don't respond directly to your posts, it's not that there's no reaction to them on the reader's part.
