Fly-bys on the board...
Has anyone noticed... that every once in awhile our little vegweb board seems to get... well how to put this... gung-ho new members who mention that they "have been vegan for X years" in every post... and the poster replies to posts but never knows any of the original posters background and says something totally "off"... like, "Try nutritional yeast!" and proceeds to explain exactly what it is to another long time vegan... and they are a little... I dunno... uppity... but then in a week or two they disappear never to be heard from again...
Does this makes sense?
Anyway, maybe I'm mean, but I'm glad those kind of people don't stick around and just sort of fly-by...
I'm proud of vegwebbers that we don't harbor and environment for that kind of stuff but aren't cliqueish and accept new people and get to know them. Yay for us!
Jenniferhughes, you are the bestest.
Haha, YAY!...even though im pretty knew to this myself...Im dedicated, cause im crazzzzy :D
To be honest, I'd never heard of nutritional yeast until I found this site!
Original post was tl;dr but I noticed you mentioned nutritional yeast and it is soooo good! I've been using it since I went vegan a year and a half ago! It's kind of like this cheesy powdery stuff, I put it in burritos and sprinkle it on my spaghetti! Try it Jenniferhughes, I promise you'll like it! Omg, bye!

Me neither!

Neither had I Catkin! ;)
I guess I didn't make the point well...there's no one on the board now who's is like this... but sometimes we get short term visitors who like to be vegan know-it-alls. And they post like mad for a week but don't take the time to get to know people and don't stick around for long.
HAHA! LMAO cephi!
Maybe they find us a little.. how shall I put this.... strange?? ??? LOL! Vegan's are known to be a little "different". ;)

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”-Ben Franklin, I think... Anyway, I'll be honest, I'm here because I know nothing! This stuff is all new to me, but I am sold and I'm never going back to SAD again. I'm feeling great for the first time in fifteen years. I even played raquetball today, and I haven't played that since before I got married 25 years ago. I really am thankful for this site though, it has given me a wealth of information and the recipes are terrific.Everyone here has been really helpful too.
My wife is not "quite" vegetarian yet, (let alone vegan), but she's getting there, ( I do ALL of the cooking, so she really has no choice except when she's at work ;) ) But she's also loving the vegan meals I'm making at home. She won't let me show her 'Meet Your Meat' from PeTA. But I have gotten her interested in Diet For a New America and I leave it lying around in areas she will be sure to pick it up.
I don't mean to be bratty, but I do think you are cliquish.
It is hard to break in. Did you ever notice how many views there are of posts compared with how many people actually post? Last night when I logged on there were something like 250 people logged on--there are a lot of members of this site. I personally feel there is a definitely a little club on this board and most of you share the same outlook on various issues and don't value as much the input that others offer. Just my opinion.

Do you have an example of an issue or two? Not attacking or defending... just curious.
My thoughts:
Some people just like to ask a few questions, or just one or two in particular, some people like to lurk often and occasionally post, others like to lurk exclusively, and then there's the random person who just likes to be a troll and say something controversial :( Other people post very often and are I guess what you'd call part of the "community" or what jkl calls a "clique."
If I had to put myself in a group, I'd say I lurk often and only occasionally post. I have, I don't know exactly, 100-something posts, but I browse other people's posts almost daily. Although I feel welcomed to ask questions and give input, there are threads that I am reluctant to join into because it seems like jumping into a private conversation - these are occasionally personal in nature, occasionally not. I think this is what jkl might have meant by "it is hard to break in". But I don't think people's opinions are being excluded or ignored just because they're not part of the little group.
I'm naturally extremely shy (in real life and in person) plus I am not really interested in posting as often as some other people do - sometimes I just would rather sit back and read....I don't really know what I am getting at here (it's late), but yeah, I don't agree that there is some exclusionary group on VW with hostile intentions towards everyone else.....
As for the fly-by-nighters, I don't know, I don't like to assume things about people I know so little about - I say as long as they're not posting stuff like "don't vegans kill babies by forcing them to drink soy milk?", I don't really care if they say something off, probably their heart's in the right place and they just haven't read enough posts to figure out who is/isn't an experienced veg*n.
I know what you mean Jennifer. They are part of the internet archetypes that someone posted about for a laugh. They were extremely amusing and mostly because they are right on target and I saw most of us on that list and I do mean me.
We don't really have true trolls around here, but I can't imagine why not, we just don't is all. I got pounced on once here recently because I was filling someone in on something about a question they had asked. I was basically accused of being a know it all and that she already knew all about "everything" I had posted. Well pardon me all to hell! I am older than most of you here and forgive me, I have been at this for over 30 years and my library of vegan and vegetarian books goes back that far too. I know the old thinking and the newer thinking and I read a lot about food topics. I don't know it all, but I am far from clueless, thank you very much. If you ask a question and I have an answer, I'll give it because you asked for it.
I think the ones that get me are about kids. I have had six of them, most of them are grown now. If there is a problem about a kid I probably actually do know about it because my kids have put me through the ringer, I am here to tell you. I have also studied developmental psychology on the Master's level, not to mention methods of counseling youngsters and personality development from birth to the oldest old. I have undergraduate credit in early childhood development with a smattering of early childhood nutrition. On this board? I am completely ignored! There is not one drop of acknowledgement that I am anything other than stupid when it comes to kids. I mention it because we are talking about it, but when it happens I let it drop.
My pet peeve is actually the newbies who admittedly have no one else to ask, but us. I am too busy right now to answer every time someone asks if Silk has dairy milk in it, or how to help a teenager be vegan from partially supportive parents, and other rather beginner questions. They have no one else to ask, but this is one of the most search friendly sites on the entire internet. Look it up please, there are far better and wiser explanations than I can give you in a couple of minutes. I also know that they don't know what I know about vegweb, or how to find things. I let those of you who have the time and oohhhh the patience to answer these, answer them. They need you even when I am feeling aggravated and impatient.
As for being a clique, yes I think this board has some element of that. For the most part, I am ignored here unless or until someone has an issue with me and my mouth (ergo my hands) and something I said.
I am going to totally disagree with you, ladydragonfly1! When I first read the jkl's comment my first thought was that there wasn't a clique. People who have funny posts (like adamcrisis) and people who have sincere, thoughtful posts (like you - I specifically thought of you) are equally and warmly accepted. I like your posts and, without polling, I can say that's pretty universal.
Not that you're not entitled to your opinion, but you seem a bit more militant than usual. Is everything okay?
Did you ever notice how many views there are of posts compared with how many people actually post?
I always thought the number was due to people like me. I often reread my posts multiple times to make sure they're coherent. ::)
I'm relatively new and have not come across any hostility so far. I can see how newcomers may view this board as somewhat cliquish. It's only natural that older posters develop relationships amongst themselves. I don't generally feel left out. There are enough non-vegan related topics so I don't feel too alienated. :-\

Well 10 more minutes until I can give Cali her before bed supplement so here goes. I agree with you humboldt_honey.
I love your posts LadyDragonfly1. I read them all. As I don't have children, can't cook or sew, I often don't respond to them because I have nothing worthwhile to say on the subjects. None the less, I truly enjoy reading your insight on all of the above subjects.
This board is far more active than it was many years ago and it is sometimes hard to read everything. When I don't comment, it is I am short on time or truly have nothing useful to add.
BTW, like I posted once before, I can't get over your hair. I would kill for hair like yours. Mine is very fine and could never be that long or it would look like string (or should I say thread!). Every time I see your picture, I wish I was blessed with gorgeous hair.
I would hate for you to think that you are not appreciated on this board. I for one think of us all as a big family. With the ups and downs, the good times and the bad times.
I too am wondering if everything is OK? You seem a little down. Can we help?

Cheezees, you are dead on. People that have been around for awhile know each other a little better. Years ago, there were different groups of cliques on this board. Trolls as well. Wonder where they all went.
Every time someone asks what NVR means and someone answers non vegan related, I let it go. I am not vegan. I am ovo lacto so I always thought it meant, non veggie related. As well, I have never been made to feel bad that I am not vegan
The diversity on this board is amazing. Everyone is welcome including meat eaters who want to make some dietary changes in their lives. Cut down on their meat eating or animal product eating.
I have never in all my 12 or 13 years on this board seen such a wonderful mix of people.
I only wish more guys would join because it is truly educational and enjoyable getting insights from the opposite sex.

Multiple, multiple times... and each time I open it to read the responses.
Ouch.... Lady D.
That was a little harsh...
I don't think anyone has called you a know-it-all in kid threads... I read most of the kid threads.
Furthermore, I've never noticed when someone ignores you, thinks you're stupid or seems to have issue with you, but I have noticed that you often (especially lately) seem to mention it in subsequent posts as if they do. ...?? I do hope things are okay with you... I know I end up cranky on the board when I'm cranky IRL.
Regarding new users asking lots of basic questions:
I think I know what you were trying to say...
Yes, when I see the 17th post asking, "What does NVR mean?" ...I'll admit sometimes I think, "There's a search button on the left!" But then I remember that the post's title wasn't, "jenniferhughes what does NVR mean?" So, I don't answer and instead give a newer member who knows the chance to respond and become involved. I see nothing wrong with that, those new users aren't tying up "important board space" or anything by asking. ;D It's not like we should expect someone to know what NVR means! It's a made up, silly abbreviation!
I take those newbie questions as a sign of settling themselves in and welcome it, hoping they ask more questions in the future.
Diver Di,
I try to say it means, Non Veg*n Related (the Veg*n, as you know, to encompass all of us...)
