My son calls soymilk "milk"...
(I'm all into posting about my son today LOL)
My husband and I are slightly concerned that our son calls soymilk "milk"
He's rarely away from one of us (LOL okay rarely away from ME!) and the few times he is we have a wonderful vegan babysitter who knows better.
But none-the-less it makes us nervous that he calls it "milk" and requests "milk" we try to call it "soymilk"
and when he says, "milk please" we say, "Oh would you like some soymilk? Sure, I can get you some."
But still.... ugh ::)
He also thinks fresh pineapple is cheese... i guess i cut it into little wedges and it looks like cheese... but how does he even know what cheese looks like??
He says, "cheEEEEEEEese!" for pictures then asks for "cheese please" and my husband and I laugh and say, "we're vegan silly!" (and furthermore the kid is allergic to dairy!) ::)
Anyway... does anyone else with kids have stuff like this happen?

If he's small yet, "milk" is easier to say than "soy milk." Interesting...a lot of my friends' sons are very sparing with their words when young, to the point of resisting speaking at all (like my brother, he preferred the point-and-grunt system!). Yet little girls don't seem to do this as much.
How old is he?
I think that's adorable! That, soymilk is just milk, and not something special. I understand your concern, though.

We don't watch TV, startaurus so that's the confusing part... he does watch DVDs but I would know if there was any cheese featured LOL I don't think someone is giving him cheese it's just funny.... it's odd how much we see it everyday.

Yabbit, He can actually say "soy milk" just fine it just a matter of doing it.
The other thing I forgot is he calls (we call) his chick'n nuggets "chicken nuggets" we just have this feeling it's gonna bite us in the you-know-what one day! lol

Ahhh zipper silence... that's what I use Newman's 'oreo' cookies for... stuff one in and you have one whole minute of quiet!!

Its Ok, I think. I used to sort of stress over that too, but has he gets older, just make him aware that your milk is different from the milk in public (as is ice cream, hot dogs, cheese, etc...). My son is 6 now and I think it makes him feel good to be able to call his stuff the same thing as his friends', but he knows its different without having to make a spectacle of himself. We do usually call things "veggie" ice cream, or "veggie" eggs, or whatever.
Once when we were out to eat my niece was getting ice cream and he wanted some and I just told him it wasn't veggie and he was fine with it! My dad, however, thought I was subjecting him to child abuse. >:( He even went so far as to say, "poor Noah, his mom won't let him have any icecream." GRRRRRRR
Thanks little2ant, that's exactly how we're hoping things go in the future. I guess until he understands that his is actually different we'll just have to keep a good eye out. Maybe using the term veggie is a good idea! i can call anything "veggie ___" he won't have to learn a new word for each item and will understand that there is somehting similar about all of them.
Someone asked me the other day about the "poor kids who are lactose intolerant" during summer when other kids are eating ice cream and i said "most kids who are that way understand and have no problem having a popcicle when the other kids have ice cream" the whole can't have ice cream thing makes no sense to me. like ice cream is a right. ::)
oh my goodness. this whole thread is really cute. i couldnt stop laughing when i read that your son calls pineapple cheese. haha. what a great cheese alternative! haha. i remember when i was little (not that little, but still) wanting cheese so bad, opening up the fridge and getting the most fatty, processed american cheese individually packaged slice. too bad i didnt think pineapple was cheese!! that would have been much healthier. and probably better tasting.
He is such a little soul. How cute that he talks so well. I was devestated when my frined's son who always called me Di Nann started to call me Diane. He is 3 and I feel he has grown up! When your son is older, I am sure he will understand the differences!

His favorite movie is Back to the Future (which he calls: "What Happened to the Car?" B2tF 3 is called "What Happened to the Train?")
He quotes stuff from it all the time, little stuff like "Great Got" (Great Scott) and always talks about "Doc"
So yesterday I'm in the kitchen cooking and he's behind me opening and closing a cabinet with gusto and I take a minute and stop and listen to him and he flings opens the cabinet door and says, "hey you! get you hand off 'er!" (from when george mcfly opens the car door and says, "hey you, get your damn hands off her!") he shook his finger at the pots and pans and everything!
It was so cute!!!! I was laughing so hard!!!!!!!!

This is soooo true. I grew up lactose intolerant--somehow grew out of it! But when I was small-small-small I KNEW that icecream or milk or whatever just meant a terrible stomachache, the kind that means actually writhing in pain, and an itchy backside, for some reason. I wouldn't touch the stuff! Mom made a lot of puddings etc. with water instead of milk, and popsicles were nice and didn't melt as fast as icecream! We made our own with juices, in those tupperware things, and sometimes she would freeze whole fruits like raspberries in the juice...so cool! (Hey maybe that's why I chew icecubes! I'm looking for the fruit! ;D) I remember eating my first icecream bar, with fear and trembling, at about age 12. It was at a BD sleepover and I didn't want to be "different" because it was a new school and I wanted to impress. I couldn't believe it didn't make me sick!
My nephew used to call most foods eggy. His youngest brother would call most foods cheese.
I don't think it's weird or unusual. In his mind he's associated "pineapple wedges" with "cheese" . Maybe he saw a commercial on TV cheese, or a photo in a magazine,a display at a store and it just clicked in his head.
