My kid's poop doesn't stink.

I am being totally serious. I am not complaining, BUT it does make it harder to keep rashes away. I seriously cannot tell when he has a poopy diaper, even when I smoosh my nose up against his butt! So many times, he has a poop for a while before I realize it and change him. And then he gets a sore butt. I'm trying to teach him to tell me since he is talking so much now. Today he said it would "be fun" to tell me...he says that about everything though.  :D

My question is, since most poop stinks, could he be lacking a nutrient or something that is making it not stink? It just doesn't have much of a smell at all. Iron? I feel that FB might have an answer for me.
;)b

ETA
He is 19 month old, and not a super great eater. He poops at least once per day, usually 2-3 times.
I just did some googling and read that if the child is not growing well and has SUPER STINKY POO it could be malabsorption (sp). He is definitely little, but does not have stinky poo, so I don't think its that!

I believe there's a thread somewhere here about non-stinky poop, that is linked to veganism.

hmm yeah i'd say it's better to not have stinky poo.

Ha! I'm a poopie, what can I say.
I don't know...it just seems like all other kids...when they drop a load the whole room stinks. I put my nose up to his butt and I can't even tell. It has to mean something! I emailed my pediatrician friend and here was her response, if anyone cares.

"lol. I know you are asking a serious question but still, I can't help but laugh! Poop smell is caused by bacterial digestion of food substances. Vegan poop definitely should be less stinky because there's less production of stinky stuff from the bacteria in your gut digesting animal fat. And breastfed poop is less stinky as well. And I think eating more simple sugars contributes to more smelly poops, but I'm not entirely certain of that last statement. I wouldn't worry about the lack of any smell. I think it will start having an odor eventually. even if it is minimal. Although it does kinda stink that you don't have an odor detector for when he poops. pun not really intended. "

oMG!
I  can't believe in the first post that I wrote that my shit doesn't stink. I totally forgot about that.
I almost wrote in this thread that mine doesn't really stink that much either, but then I thought that would be too embarrassing. Apparently, I didn't think so in 2008!
LMAO!
I am so embarrassed now! haha!

lol, L2A...you're cute.

My little one still get 95% of her calories from breastmilk (she is not liking the solid foods at all - 10 months). I think her poop smells like buttered popcorn. Seriously. This one time I was walking around the house for quite some time thinking a neighbor or something was cooking popcorn....now I know better.

HAHA! Really? Lyle is still breastfeeding too, but he also has rice, soy, and other nut milks.
i think his baby poo sort of smelled buttery now that I think about it.
yay again for vegan poo!

Sorry to dissapoint, l2a, but I have no idea.

Ok... I have an idea... one of the things that make farts smell bad is thiol compounds from eating foods with sulfur-containing amino acids. There are more of those in animal products, less in vaygun foods (hence the whole damned "complete protein" thing), so maybe thiols are also responsible for poop smell. So, when you eat foods that have sulfur-containing amino acids and other compounds, you get smellier farts. Like chickpeas.

(I will not admit to any colonic activity)

Also... you're his mom. Just sayin'.

I would like to add, that my older son, almost 9, was not blessed with unsmelly poop.

Thanks for poppin in FB! :)

ETA: I am VERY sensitive to smells, and would be the first to admit if they were smelly. Dh can't smell it either! No one can.
(I guess that's what you meant by, "you are his mother"? lol!)
Or did you mean that because I don't have smelly poo, neither does he? ha!?

My daughter went through a couple months a year ago of constant nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.  It was terrible.  The stuff smelled so bad I could smell it across the house.  The doctor and I were almost convinced it was celiac disease which is an autoimmune disease that causes malasorption.  Anyways, really stick poop has a lot of protein and fat it in.  To me that describes the diet of an omni, especially the ones around here that eat at McDs everyday or so.  They never did figure out what was wrong with my baby, but it resolved on its own.  I had the same problem with diaper rashes.  She had a sensative bottom and would get really bad rashes.  I had to check her constantly, and it definately motivated me to potty train earlier than some.

more of the former reason; i didn't even think about the genetic predisposition to unsmelly poop, haha.

I just had to pop in (poop in?) and check this thread because I saw the title and it made me laugh.
When I was in school, my mother would describe the "popular princess" girls as, "Oh her mummy thinks her poop doesn't stink." Only she didn't say poop.

The British are even more graphic. Our neighbour was from Birmingham and he would say, "Oh she thinks the sun shines out his backside."  :-D

And L2A, cherish the days now that your kid "thinks it will be fun" to tell you everything. In about 10 years, he won't want to tell you anything. That's when you worry.

Here is an interesting thing in this topic.  When my son and I first went vegan two weeks ago, neither of our poops stank.  But just recently both of our poops are starting to get an odor again, but not near as bad as it was, but it stinks again.  I am assuming that is because our bodies are adjusting to the new diet?

I can't say my daughter's poop doesn't stink, but after having my 2 year old niece over and changing a couple of her dirty diapers I can say that my daughter's poop stinks MUCH less!!! Other poop fun facts...since becomming vegan, my daughter has always been very regular going 2x's a day usually.

Just an update on the scentless poo situation.
Lyle's poop really stinks now. Horribly!
It is very obvious when he has a poopy diaper. We are working on potty training, but I am way more interested that he is. ;)

those were good times when he had unstinky poo!

I nephew's poop didn't smell, after a bath - a kiss on the lips were salty. He was dignosed with CF.  He was born with it. At 6 months old, he had only gained 1 pound sense birth. He was expected to live 12 to 15 years. He is now 39 but ended up with a double lung transplant.

Another reason for this is yeast in the diagestive track. It will get so bad you'll think your dieing.

This is very important. Talk to your doctor about it.
