The official (not vegan!) restaurant vegan option review.

We all know how hard it is to try to eat out in a not so vegan friendly restaurant; it's hard to be sure of anything to eat. Here we can discuss what we've found/asked about/had at our local (you never know when someone might be in your area, and need some help!), chain, fast food, etc. restaurants. For vegan (friendly) restaurant reviews, visit: The official vegan restaurant review. We have veganeatingout, and other such websites/posts, but we should have our own place here to discuss our restaurant findings, personally!

Please list how you found out about the veganness of items, location of restaurant, what you were told about items, how food was, what all you have had, or if there's just NOTHING to eat. If you are not quite sure if an item might be vegan, say that! We can share what we know. If you know for sure that a place has no vegan options, let us know! Or, if you know of a reliable longer list of vegan items at a restaurant that you have tried, post the link. I've included review dates, so you might want to take older reviews with a bigger grain of salt, if ya know what I mean.

Amazing Grace
(Duluth, MN) has vegan sandwiches (naturebound)
Andy's Frozen Custard

Applebee's
(2009) I had some sorta portobello burger. It originally wasn't vegan (cheese or somethin), so I got it without. It was just a bun and the mushroom - no other toppings. Weird. And, the mushroom itself wasn't very good. AND, it appears not to be on the menu anymore anyway. Oh well, it wasn't tasty! (fb)
I always get a baked potato with nothing on it, it's a little more than a dollar. I fluff it up with oil and salt and pepper. (sarah)
Arby's
A long time ago I went to one and they made me a pretty cool veggie sammich. I think I was just starting the transition to veganism though, so I'm honestly not sure about their bread. (sarah)
Arthur Treacher's

Alto Cinco
(2007; Syracuse, NY) has the best burritos, and especially the best guac I've ever tasted, and I've had burritos all over the world.  In my opinion their food blows Chipotle's stuff out of the water. (Cams)
At Sara's Table Chester Creek Cafe
(Duluth, MN) Has vegan options (or dishes that can be veganized). (naturebound)
Atlanta Bread
(2011; Wichita Falls, TX) I've gone here a couple times. The vegan options I know about: vegetable soup (which I haven't had yet, because it's a soup of the day thing), and the California avocado sandwich with no cheese and no sauce. I put lots of spicy mustard on it and dip it in balsamic vinegar and oil. It's not bad, but it's basically an avocado on some focaccia. I've also had a smoothie there, which I was assured is just fuit and apple juice. P has gotten some pasta thing there with no cheese. I thought you could get the panini with no cheese, but they told me that was not possible. (AC)
Au Bon Pain
They have several things blatantly labeled as vegan! I've had the 12-veggie soup, which was pretty good considering I got it at a mini chain restaurant in a train station. The black bean, vegetarian lentil, curried rice and lentil, gazpacho, tuscan white bean, and moroccan tomato lentil soups are also labeled vegan. Their website lists ingredients and nutrition facts. They only had pre-made salads at the one I went to, but it looks from their website like the meatless salads could be made vegan, just don't get the croutons, and pick one of the vegan vinaigrettes. (Lauuren)
Auntie Anne's
Pretzels are vegan if you get one without butter, but that makes it hard for the salt to stay on. (courth)
Austin Grill

Bagel Nosh

Bagel Tyme
(Merced, CA) Some of the best bagels, ever. Not even like "oh, this is good for lil Merced" but like legit good. There are some nonvegan varieties, most obvious (jalapeno cheddar, basil parmesan), some not (wheat has honey). Lots of vegan varieties, though: plain, everything (fav!!), blueberry, cinnamon sugar (so unhealthy YEAH), cinnamon raisin, poppy, and several others. They serve some coffee and have a soymilk option. They make different flavored cream cheeses, none magically vegan, sadly. (fb)
Bahama Breeze

Bahama Buck's

Baja Fresh
(2011) I can't remember if the pinto beans are also vegan, but I always get black beans on account of tastiness. The tortilla is vegan, and they also have fajita vegetables they can put in the burrito. You have to ask for the burrito without cheese or sour cream (it's default). It's pretty decent, but chipotle is better. The salsad are all vegan, and are self-serve and free. They're all pretty mild to me, but have labels for how hot they are. (fb)
Baskin Robbins

Beaner's Central Coffee House
(Duluth, MN) sandwiches & wraps can be veganized by excluding cheese; they also have fresh dairy free fruit smoothies and fresh fruit options too (naturebound)
Bernice's Bakery
(2007; Missoula, MT) We purchased some of our bread here (sourdough and wheat), and loved their hummus. They have a few vegan baked good options, and we tried one, but I can't remember what. The hummus was the best! (AC)
Big Ten Burrito
(2011; Ann Arbor, MI) Ann Arbor's number 1 burrito spot. If you're going elsewhere you're probably fucking up. They have a normal veggie burrito that you can get without cheese and its 3.50 tax included. It weighs about 2 pounds and is a lot of food for the money. Veggie no cheese comes with rice, black beans, salsa, and lettuce if you choose. I like to add guac. You can also order a giant which is like 4 pounds of food and bigger than my girlfriends head. No lies. Awesome place and open til 4am. (ska1234)
Biga Pizza
(2008; Missoula, MT) We ate here once. They were very friendly and made us special vegan pizzas with lots of veggies. It wasn't spectacular, but worked. (AC)
Black Angus Steakhouse

Blimpie

Boston Market

Braums

Breadsmith

Bridge Pizza
(2008; Missoula, MT) I miss this place! They have a soy cheese option for pizza, and you can pick lots of toppings. The crust was excellent. (AC)
Brixx

Buffalo Wild Wings
I have not found anything vegan on the menu. Wouldn't trust any of the fried things. (AC)
Being vegetarian, and not vegan, I have had the veggie burger here three times. It never tasted good, but a couple of times it was my only option when out with friends or on the road. The last time I had it, I got food poisioning so bad I’ll never eat another veggie burger in my life. Packaged or home made. I couldn’t eat for three days afterwards without puking. Never again. (shea)
Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse

Burger King
(2011) The fries are ok. I heard a while ago that the onion rings are vegan, and it's hard to find ingredients online, but: http://www.fastfoodingredients.com/2008/04/06/burger-king-onion-rings/ they appear vegan. i had them one time, and they weren't great. They didn't seem to actually have onion slices in them, but had onion-flavored paste stuff instead (!) maybe that's the "rehydrated onion" from the ingredients list. (fb)
I swear I had read the french fries were seasoned with chicken but according to this http://jessfastfood.tripod.com/fastfoodnutritionfacts/id24.html the french fries and onion rings to appear to be legit (amymylove)
I wouldn't eat the onion rings at Burger King. I don't think they have a dedicated fryer for them. I'm almost positive the fries are okay, but not the rings. (veganola)
Burgerville

BurritoVille
(2007) THAT place rules the school! (kennedy)
(2007) I heartily agree that Burritoville is better (and MUCH cheaper! FREE CHIPS AND SALSA!) than Chipotle, although I like both. (operachic)
Cafe Barada
(2011; Cambridge, MA) Not a vegetarian restaurant but a good number of vegan options. Run by a Lebanese family. One of the 2 daily dinner specials is always veggie.  Great hummus. (ericac)
Cafe Rio

California Pizza Kitchen
When I went quite a few years ago they assured me that their lentil soup was vegan (hesp)
California Tortilla
We ate here at an airport, can't remember which one. The No-Meato Burrito says on the sign that it's "vegan-friendly." It was nothing amazing, but for airport food it was like we struck gold. You can get it as a burrito or as a "bowl" without a tortilla. (Lauuren)
Camille's Sidewalk Cafe

Cantina Grill
(Denver airport; 2012) Considering it's airport food, this place is pretty good, and not too expensive. They have a surprising number of veg*n options, considering the menu isn't that big. I had some vegetarian tacos, and my hubby had a vegetarian burrito. Both were good-sized meals, but make sure you order a side of guacamole, which isn't included but is definitely worth the extra $1. (lebkuchen)

Cantina Laredo
(DFW airport; 2011) This airport restaurant is one of the more expensive ones, but they had a nice option for us. We shared the avocado and artichoke enchiladas with plenty of chips and salsa. The salsa is really good. It came with a jicama salad type thing, but the jicama pieces were just too big. She gave us the ranchero sauce instead of the tomatillo sauce for some reason (something not vegan?), but it was pretty good. (AC)
Capriotti's

Caribou Coffee

Carino's Italian

Carl's Jr.

Carluccio's

Carrabbas Italian Grill

Carvel

Charley's Grilled Subs

Cheddar's
(2011; Ft. Smith, AR) Isn't as un-veg-friendly as it looks online, at least this one is pretty user-friendly... they've got salsa/ guacamole/ chips & steamed edamame for starters, with coarse salt blend & tasty dipping sauce for the edamame; they've also got a good salad with mixed greens, carmelized pears, almonds, & some other good stuff-- had to ask for no chicken/ no cheese, but it was excellent with those modifications; don't remember what dressing was clean (sorry, should've reviewed it more promptly!), but it was a better dining experience than I was expecting. There aren't a huge amount of menu choices there that are veg-friendly, but those that ARE are pretty good-- that was my experience, anyway. (hotcooknmama)
Cheeburger Cheeburger

Chia Shiang
(2011; Ann Arbor, MI)  It's a Chinese restaurant that has it's own vegetarian menu and they even prepare the vegetarian/vegan food in a separate kitchen. They have many great fake meats (mostly seitan). They are also willing to answer your questions about the ingredients, to make sure that a vegetarian meal is vegan. (krista)
Chick fil A
I think all they have is a stupid overpriced fruit salad. Half of their little salad is cheese (Or at least it was last time I went there with some one) and they got really cranky when I asked for one with no cheese and wouldn't do it. (sarah)
their fries are vegan... and fried in their own thing (not the chicken one) (hesp)
Chili's
(2011; Roanoke, TX) I asked the waiter how the beans and rice were prepared, and the ingredients in the black bean burger.  He had to go ask, and another waiter came by to check on us so I asked him but he also had to go ask.  Then the Manager came by, assured me that the black bean burger was vegan, no dairy, no eggs, no animal products of any kind.  Then the second waiter came back with a printout from a vegan blog with some information from Chili's corporate headquarter stating that the black bean burger had dairy in it and while it was vegetarian, it was NOT vegan.  But the rice, black beans and corn on the cob (without butter) were vegan options.  So I changed my order to that.  But I thought that was so nice of him to do that, he even printed out several pages on allergen suggestions as well as the nutritional information spreadsheet - and he wasn't even our waiter!  (stacydan)
(2011; Abilene, TX)I didn't visit Chili's for a long time after I learned the black bean burger is not vegan (I think it has egg?), and after looking at their weird allergen list, but ended up there with some family the other day. They now have a fire roasted chili and corn guacamole with chips and salsa. I ordered that with a side of black beans with pico de gallo, tortillas, and lettuce (to make burrito things). It was actually quite good! I like the guac, and it's enough to share. The beans were good. The whole thing was like $5. I wouldn't mind going there again with family. (AC)
Chin's

Chipotle Mexican Grill
(2007) they have the best guacomole on the face of the earth. (chickpea27)
(2008) I am not a huge fan of chipotle. The burritos are okay at best (the burrito bowl is the only thing really worth getting), but everything is so salty! I don't know, I know lots of people jock this place but it just doesn't do it for me. (sb)
(2008) Yesterday was my first time eating at Chipotle and all I can say is: WOW, that's one ginormous burrito!!  I could only eat half of it.  I loved their spicy red sauce and the guacamole was almost as good as mine....almost. (storm)
(2008) Their pinto beans are cooked w/ bacon, just to let you know...But the black beans are not. (pinkerbelle)
(2008) I got the vegetarian burrito bowl and chips.  The bowl was quite a large portion, and the bag of chips was good-sized as well.  My total was $7 exactly, which I thought was fairly reasonable considering the amount of food.  I really liked the food.  The guacamole had a nice kick of lime, and the chips were perfectly thin and crispy.  The cilantro-lime rice was pretty tasty.  All in all, I enjoyed my meal, and I'll return in the future. (willwolf)
(2010)i love chipotle simply because it is a very popular, easy to come by restaurant that has standard vegan options; i can go out with roommates, friends, coworkers, etc,  get totally filled up and have left overs.... not to mention it's delicious! i get pretty much everything one can on a burrito and keep it vegan -- BB,rice, fajitas vegs, all 4 salsas (with extra hot, please), lots o guac and lettuce.... i always give the burrito roller a hearty thank you, because it's a feat rollin that sucker up.... nearly always rips... but if it's not messy, it's no good! (secretspicy)
(2010) I had a bowl type thing (just cause i didn't want to be a slob with a huge burrito leaking all over my face in front of my new co workers)... the bowl was awesome though (with tortilla chips for dipping)... i think the pinto beans aren't veg because when i said i wanted the vegetarian bowl the worker guy was like "Oh so you want the black beans" so i just said "Um sure"... I got black beans, white rice, the hottest salsa, avocado, and lettuce in a bowl... it was yummy! They have chipotle flavored tabasco which tastes perfect on their food (amymylove)
(2010) I get veggie soft tacos lately. With no rice. black beans, mild salsa, a little bit of corn salsa, lettuce, guac. Sometimes I'll get rice on one of them. Actually. I usually make one different for funsies. Mm. I used to get burritos. Burritos are huge. I think you get the most for your money with a burrito. I recommend a burrito. Haha. Its a good first time experience thing. (sarah)
(2010) Bowl with black beans, corn, salsa, lettuce and avocado (saskia)
(2010) My daughter and I split the soft tacos, with rice, black beans, corn salsa, and get the guac on the side, for chips. (but they come with the guac so its cheaper to do this and add a little into the tacos, and use a little on the chips.) (babysgotsauce)
(2010) theres a chipotle in nyc that has the option of gardein chicken.  it's ok, nothing to get super excited about especially cus it doesnt include the free guac like the veggie option.  id rather have the guac than the chickn but i guess if it goes well they might offer it at the other chipotles. (ppc)
(2010) Oh, my!  So I had their "Garden Blend" made with Gardein two days ago.  My friend and I drove to the beach and came to a screeching halt when we passed Chipotle.  This addiction is really unhealthy.  But anyways, this garden blend stuff is awesome. (alicepleasance)
(2009) The veg burrito bowl with no cheese, yummy (belovedk)
(2009) I like because it's a complete protein and a burrito is super filling (and my boyfriend loves it there too, and he eats meat), plus they have the best guac on the planet! (sharkie)
(2011) They give you a generous amount of guacamole in the burrito, which is great. The salsas are all pretty good, and they have a corn salsa/salad thing you can add to the burrito too. The burritos are REALLY heavy, I can't imagine how heavy the non-vegan would be. Anyway, my only complaint is that their food is pretty salty. Also, their chips pretty much suck. They never taste fresh, and they're seasoned with non-delicious limey coarse salt stuff. (fb)
I love chipotle i just went to one for the first time in houston texas, they are omg good. (ashles)
I realized chipotle upped prices. Everything costs the same now. Veggies are like a dollar more than they were. lame. (sarah)
The Chipotle in St. Pete appears to have reduced their portion size.  It's odd, if I take my daughter to the one in Tampa she can't finish the bowl, but the one in St. Pete is easy to finish (and it didn't used to be).  Has anyone else noticed this at their local Chipotle?  I'm thinking that it is probably just the management at the St. Pete one being cheap asses......so lame! (storm)
Chop't Creative Salad Company
I've gotten the Vegetarian Powerhouse and the Grilled Asian - "naked" - they're pretty good salads, and if you want to pay extra you can get all sorts of better kinds of greens (although I disagree with their whole philosophy of smashing the greens into tiny bits)! You can also build-your-own salad. Not all the dressings are vegan, but they make them all there, so it's easy to find out which ones are - I can't remember what I got, it was whatever the person recommended that had agave instead of honey. (Lauuren)
Chuck E. Cheese's

CiCi's Pizza Buffet

Cinnabon

Clover
(2011; Cambridge, MA) All vegetarian. Started as food trucks (which they still have) now have a restaurant. (ericac)
Cold Stone Creamery

Cosi

Cotton Patch Cafe
(2011; Wichita Falls and Abilene, TX) They actually have a "wabbit platter" which is a choice of veggies. This actually does not mean a ton, because the majority of the "veggies" are not vegan. Anyway, I've been able to get something edible when out with family. I get the salad (no cheese or croutons) with balsamic vinaigrette, french fries, broccoli with no butter ("skinny"), and steamed veggies with no butter. One time the veggies were really underdone, but the second time they were better. (AC)
Cousins Subs

Cracker Barrel
Gross. I used to have to eat here a ton in highschool because it was my teachers favorite place. Their salads are reallyyy tiny. I know all of their veggies are cooked with butter or meat in some way, but according to every one I've been to, they have a fryer just for their fries and those are vegan. (sarah)
Curry House
Has about 10 locations in socal, and is a Japanese curry restaurant. The vegetable curry is vegan if you get the mild sauce (it is clearly stated on the menu), and if you want it spicy, there's always chili oil on the table anyway. you can also add hot tofu to it. They also make a couple of types of vegan spaghetti, one with vegetables, and one very mushroomy one. IMO, the curry is better, and is what people come for; it's sweet and mildly spiced. There's also "tofu steak," which is grilled tofu in a sweet vegetable-based sauce, and is quite delicious; it's an appetizer type thing, and comes out sizzling in a little skillet. There's non-vegan tofu cheesecake (be warned! i think it's made from tofu but has eggs. something like that). Another non-vegan tofu item is the mapo tofu that they occasionally have, which contains ground meat (i think it states such, but just in case you see it's tofu and think it'll be vegetarian...). The prices are pretty good, and the service has always been good. It's more of a family restaurant than a fancy one. (fb)

At taco bell if you order ANYTHING on the menu fresco sub bean its vegan. Most of the time this means you are only getting tortilla, beans or rice, lettuce, tomatoes and salsa. Never get it with jalapenos, theres always cheese in the jalapeno thing. Theres a butt ton of cross contamination but I guess it just depends on when you go in

You could get like a tostada, a grilled stuffed burrito (Which are on 12" tortillas instead of 10" a little less dinky) or like, a crunch wrap or something...

my faves:

bean and cheese burrito, no cheese (i don't like the fresco one)
bean and cheese burrito, no cheese, add potato
bean and cheese burrito, no cheese, add rice (and even potato)
crunchwrap supreme no meat, sub beans, no cheese, no sour cream
7 layer burrito, no cheese, no sour cream, add potato

are cinnamon twists vegan?

tbell also has some new lemonades and hot sauces (verde and chipotle) that are vegan as well!

Huddle House is not really veg friendly at all... but it's the only breakfasty place in west BFE, AR, where I live now. So when hub wants to go out for weekend brunch, I've found a couple things to eat there that are borderline passable:

Grits and toast/ specify no butter for both (they don't add butter while cooking the grits; haven't seen the bread label, but I don't sweat the purity of bread & sugar when eating out-- skip it if you prefer)... with jam on the toast and salt/ pepper/ Louisiana hot sauce on the grits, it's an ok breakfast in a pinch. I sometimes get them to saute the bell peppers/ onions/ mushrooms/ tomatoes/ jalapenos that they put in omelets or hash browns, and I eat them on toast like an open-faced sandwich... Um, coffee and orange juice... That's about it. No fruit, no oatmeal, grr.

They also have hash browns (with bell peppers/ onions/ mushrooms/ tomatoes/ jalapenos) and sweet potato fries, but I betcha they have milk-derived shit in 'em-- no one has denied or confirmed this for me, but most frozen potato stuff does... I also have no illusions about the separation of ingredients here. :-P I would not go here on my own, but when dragged there can make it work (to some degree) without eating at home/ just having coffee (although that is NOT a bad option)! ;-)

I have a *really* hard time eating at the mall on the rare occasion that I am there. We've got Charley's Subs, Subway, Sbarro, Panda Chinese, Some Japanese place, Chik Filet, etc....all I have found is a coffee shop that sells ABC vegan Cookies. Thank goodness for them! Any ideas on the other stuff?

Does the Japanese place have veggie sushi?  I usually have pretty good luck at sushi places.  Subway, of course, has the veggies on white bread option, if you're desperate.  I'm pretty sure Panda's web site says absolutely nothing there is vegetarian.

I just looked at their site, and it looks like it's the shared equipment thing, but I don't know if any of the (shared equipment) vegetarian dishes are vegan.

Oh, you're right. I had it in my head that there was chicken stock (or something like that) in everything.  But yeah, it vaguely mentions "cooking process" and shared equipment.  They probably just don't want to get sued.

Yeah, I don't really know anything about them, but just saw that after glancing at the site. It could be that they use animal stock, and still consider that "vegetarian." I just saw that they at least had some vegetable/tofu dishes. I typically do stay away from Chinese restaurants, because there are so many possible animal ingredients!

i heard the stock in everything too for sure somewhere...

and thanks krista for the cinnamon twist ingredients... look vegan to me even though idk what the hell half the ingredients are which is kinda scary lol

The Panda Express website used to say nothing they prepared was vegetarian (er, what about white rice?), but now it's got that vague disclaimer. A vegan friend of mine ordered food from them last year for a club event, and was assured by the manager that the mixed vegetables and the eggplant tofu thing were vegan. But, you know how much that means... Still, she said the manager seemed well-informed. ??

Can you ever know FOR SURE unless you prepare it yourself?! Go ask your local one, and tell us what they say! We don't have one near here.

Yw. I don't know what most of those ingredients are either. The cinnamon twists taste good though, but only get them once in a great while since they are not healthy.
