What's your worst cooking/baking habit?

Mine (at least recently) is making things too salty! I think it's just because I know we like salt, so I've been going a bit overboard. I am also pretty confident about seasoning things without tasting a whole lot. I had some homemade refried beans that were inedible on their own, and some other salty things. I need to remember to just add salt later!

What about you?

ha. I don't know if it's my worst, but I'm completely the opposite. If a recipe doesn't have salt listed, I won't add it, and I will often cut down/omit even if it is listed.  My husband keeps having to remind me to put salt in certain things that he says just need to have it in to come out just right.
I honestly can't taste that it's not there, so I just think I can always leave it out...

I'm eyeing measurements a lot more recently. Especially when I halve recipes with 1/3 cup measurements (who has a 1/6 cup?).

Not really a bad habit, but just a taste/cheapness thing, but I usually leave out the nuts called for in almost any recipe, and because my bf hates them, bell peppers. I never realized how many recipes had tons of bell pepper!

I stick my grubby little fingers in everything....I know it doesn't matter when I'm just cooking for Andy and I, but I can't break the habit, even when I'm making things for other people, like a party or something....

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

jk.

I don't usually measure much, unless I'm testing/want to see how a recipe will come out exactly. fb, what about if you're making pesto? do you just not make pesto? (nuts)

I mess with the recipe the first time, and I think I should do it once, just to see how it's *supposed* to come out. I'll sub half brown sugar in, half applesauce, and I always cook with whole wheat flour. I just recently discovered white whole wheat, but that's the most refined I'm going to go. So, I just tinker with recipes constantly. Whenever I review a recipe and say I didn't change anything it's rare, and it's also saying the recipe fit my taste perfectly.

EM: I sample a bit too much too. I'm okay with it when it's just for the 2 of us, but it's a bad habit. Last night I was baking brownies (Vegan Brownies, VW!) and snickerdoodles for a earth day sale, and I had to be soooo careful I wasn't sticking any part of myself into the dough/batter!

Oh, and when I try a recipe for the first time, I usually always cut it in half. It's a security thing. I also need a 1/6 cup!!

I tend to make too many substitutions.  Most of the time it's because I don't have things on hand, and I'm not much of a food planner.  Sometimes it's because of things my daughter or I don't like or even that the ingredient is not available here.  Anyway, when I sub half the ingredients its kind of hard to judge a recipe.  Then again, most of what I make comes out well anyways.  Maybe I need to start menu planning again though.

I do this. My husband is always complaining that there's no salt when I make soup or something.

I'm with AC, representing the salt lovers. I have to try and hold back on salt and seasonings, because I like my food saltier, spicier, and hotter than my bf. I have to add some things after we get our servings.

I'm that way with spiciness - I always add way too much cayenne or sriracha - not for me, but for everyone else!  I have to force myself to go easy with it when I know someone is gonna be eating it....

Cursing. A lot. That's why I don't bake too often.

Seriously...I love to cook. I HATE to bake. I can't stand how precise everything has to be and how things like humidity and altitude can affect your results. So...yeah, I curse a lot while I'm baking. I say things like, "ENJOY YOUR F***ING COOKIES, HONEY!!" and other words of endearment.

Hilarious! I guess I just don't think about those things when baking (altitude, humidity...). Most things seem to work out! I'm also not all too precise with baking..  maybe you'll enjoy it more without thinking about those things! :)

I'm with you guys on the salt/spicy thing.
The saltiness has only been recently, but I know it's not necessarily good for me :(
I add crushed red pepper to EVERYTHING...and nobody else in the family likes spice.

i actually do use nuts in pesto, but pretty much anything with whole nuts/chunks of nuts... i don't add them. i also never add raisins. blegh.

i tend to not add salt at all (some recipes are way too salty for me!), so half the time there's enough salt (because of miso/soy sauce/etc also in the recipe), and the other half it's totally bland and has to be salted later. But I think I like it that way... each to her own for saltiness.

The salt issue is a hot one for me--my overweight sedentary coworkers tell me all the time that I eat too much salt. But if you're an athlete or you're sweating a lot, you're going to need it! When I get done with a run I can scratch dried salt off of my skin from sweating so much. This has to be replaced somehow!

I don't think this is actually a "bad" habit, but one out of nececisity...(?sp, can't spell that word!)

I tend to underspice things.  My son likes things bland so I started leaving out ingredients called for in recipes or reducing them by a whole bunch, such as cumin, or red pepper flakes.  Now my taste buds have grown accustomed to things underspiced and I find that I enjoy things only lightly seasoned.  You can taste the veggies more that way.

I am also using WAY less garlic and onion then I used to.

But I do tend to over salt things ever now and then myself because I love salt.  I put way too much salt in the pasta water when making pasta, but I really like salty pasta!

Tell me again, why is too much salt bad?  I just find that it makes me thirsty, but is actually a good thing since I tend to not drink enough water anyway.

My blood pressure is consistenly low, the only time it was ever "average" which is high for me was the last two months of my pregnancy.

It is my cholesterol that is high, hence the veg*n diet in the first place.  So I don't understand the whole salt issue.

there is a spell check button on here.

I never mix my flax egg replacer with water separately. I just dump the flax in with the dry ingredients.  oh, and I never mix the wet and dry ingredients separately. I just mix the dry stuff and them dump in the wet ingredients one by one.
