weird food combinations that are so good!

Often not enough to be a recipe, I'd love it we could share some of the weird and unexpected food combinations that we love.

Here is my recent favourite: roasted chickpeas in cereal (they are hard and crunchy)
;D

Zucchini slices spread with dijon mustard - fresh or barbequed - delicious!

in college I worked at a chinese restaurant and they made this great sweet and sour sauce out of ketchup, sugar and applesauce.  you can dip lots of things in it, and it is so good!

Mmmmm, that sounds so tasty. I'm thinking grilled...

I use to douse my mom's fettucine alfredo with Heinz 57 sauce.  Now I prefer the Alfreda sauce from VWAV as is.

Wasabi peas & raisins
Peanut butter & maple syrup on toasted bagel
Fake bologna and ketchup sandwiches  :)
Grilled "cheese" sandwich with grape jelly
Cooked carrots dipped in cold nayonnaise
Homefries/hashbrowns with maple syrup
Peanut butter & cereal sandwich (I like Cheerios but my friend Dave like Frosted Mini Wheats!)
I've dipped popcorn in my soy vanilla icecream
Grilled peanut butter & banana sandwich
French fries dipped in maple syrup
My dad got me turned on to peanut butter, soy cheese & relish sandwiches!
BBQ flavour rice crackers dipped in bbq sauce
When I was a kid I ate saltine sandwiches (saltine crackers & margarine between bread!)
The New Vegan recipe book has a recipe for Strawberry Salsa (I've not tried it)

Comments on other entries:

1. The tofutti cheese/onions/apricots (from Boomerang) sounds really good to me! I like that sweet/savory/creamy thing.
2. Re: strawberries and vinegar: my go-to dessert for company is grapes and mixed berries marinated in a balsalmic vinegar/rose wine/sugar marinade. So good...
3. Malt vinegar on mashed potatoes doesn't sound that out there, considering how absolutely delicious and classic fries and malt vinegar are.
4. I forgot how much I loved grilled cheese and pickles when I was young!

Now for my own weird combinations:

1. When I was in high school, before I got introduced to soymilk I put OJ on multigrain cheerios. It was really good. (This is the only cereal I've found OJ to work with, though.)

2. I started doing the ketchup-and-eggs thing, even though I never ate ketchup on anything else. Now I do ketchup on scrambled tofu. (It helps that i always have organic ketchup... I do taste a difference.) I don't think it's THAT weird, but ketchup-on-eggs seems to be a classic weird-food. (Salsa is good too.)

3. Last time I was at my parents' house I ate romaine lettuce covered in BBQ sauce. I heart BBQ sauce...

And some memories from my more junk-food laden ovo-lacto days:

French Fries with ranch dressing was my ultimate junk food in HS and college.

There is a 50s diner/Indian restaurant across the street from my college campus. I don't know how many nights my dinner was a side of mac and cheese with vegetable samosas.

And finally, not a weird combo, but I love pickles in a way that it is not healthy. My pickle love has sparked pregnancy rumours.

That's not weird at all! At least not to me. I used to do that a lot... and when I'm anyplace that doesn't have soymilk, I use OJ instead. It's great with corn flakes. And actually, when I was younger, my siblings and I would put grape juice on our cereal a lot. That was really goooood!

That's not weird either. I used to do that, when I didn't think eggs were... um... disgusting.

I'm a little sad that I don't have any weird food combinations to speak of... not really. I don't put pickles on ice cream, or eat radishes with peanut butter. I play it pretty safe with my food.

Was just thinking I want to put strawberries and basil together in something... I don't think that's too weird, but I don't think I've ever seen it in a cookbook or on a menu or anything.

ETA: Awww snap! Looks awesome!

I haven't read the entire thread so I don't know if someone already said this BUT...... peanut butter, lettuce and dill pickle sandwiches = YUM! I know it sound so gross.... my dad use to eat them when I was a kid and it took me the longest time to try one..... they are actually really good!
another, not quite so wierd is peanut butter and butter sandwiches (can you say artery clogging) and spagetti and mayo sandwhiches (also yum). Basically you take left over spagetti and put it on two slices of bread covered in mayo. (veg*n mayo of course)!
another I recently invented is avocado, tomato, mushroom , dill pickle, toffutti cream 'cheese' and mustard sandwich....sounds wierd but good! Especially if you toast the bread first  ;)

Spinach mixed with chickpeas, peas, broadbeans, mushrooms, lemon juice and salt/pepper.. Every child's worst nightmare but so yummy..

And another strange thing is putting hot chocolate powder in a cup of milk, mixing it up a bit and eating it with a spoon. This only really works for the grainier types, & with chocolate Hemp Shake powder.

i used to do this with swiss miss hot chocolate and regular milk when i was a teenager!  i loved the powdery-crunchy-gooey-ness of it.  now i kinda cringe...

i can't think of anything weird that i eat right now...  but according to my dad, most of what i eat is weird.  this from the man who told me he likes his mustard paired with meat when i told him my potato salad had mustard instead of mayo.  who's weird?

Oh no, I have to hide your post from my husband, ABrimmer... he's insane for peanut butter. I think he would eat PB on anything. Me personally, I can't stand it unless it's mixed with chocolate, but that's just me.

I had no idea that there were so many other mustard-addicts! I thought it was just me and my dad. Whenever I make a loaf of bread, that's how I taste-test, by slathering it with mustard and trying it that way.

I love mustard too...  haven't had it in a while, but i used to make brownies and put mustard on mine before eating them...

I just read through all of the posts and I have to say I don't think I have many weird food combos.

I used to absolutely love french fries dipped in mayo. :)>>> I am sure it is still yummy but I don't eat it anymore.

I had roasted brussel sprouts with horseradish mustard for dinner last night.

The strawberry/balsamic vinegar thing is not weird at all...just yum.

My son just reminded me that I make black bean brownies and a chocolate cake made from beets..I suppose some people might find that weird. :o

never, never, never tell them what is in it until after they've tasted it and of course loved it...then you tell them! ^-^  and scream "so there!"

hehehe...if i have learned one valuable lesson from being vegan, it is secrecy of ingredients. I usually do that with anyone else but *shrug*.

She just doesnt like anything unless its dripping with meat juice or dairy ingredients. If i tell her somethings vegan after she eat it (even if she liked it) she'll go..."Yeah, it TASTED vegan..." what does that mean? it TASTED vegan?? Like we have our own set of different tastebuds? Does vegan taste= dirt? Ugh.

just say thank you.. to me "tasting vegan" = tastes good and usually made from scratch as opposed to overly processed mixes full of preservatives.

last night i smashed a piece of bread and put peanut butter on it, then drenched it in chocolate syrup and was going to put soy whip on top, but the can was empty.

bf had raisins added to his.  eww!

not too weird for me though, since as a child i made my grandmother make me peanut butter and chocolate chip sammiches.  mmmmmmmm... :)>>>
