Vegetarian Eggs?

An omni friend told me that the couple in front of her at the grocery store the other day were buying "vegetarian eggs." She said they were made to look like real eggs, but the ingredients said they were made out of soy and stuff. I was like "I think I would have heard of those..." Any ideas? ???
I've heard of egg replaces and tofu scramble---but not "whole eggs"...hmmmm...sounds like something whole foods might have
I'm skeptical. Perhaps she was looking at a list of what the hens that produce the eggs were fed rather than the actual "egg ingredients". Like these eggs:

I googled "vegan eggs" and came up with nothing like what she described to you. I'm going to Whole Foods later today. I'll look and ask.
Huh. I haven't heard of them, either. They sound expensive.
She was at the regular grocery store...yeah, I couldn't figure it out either!
i am pretty sure i've seen vegetarian eggs at the store.
they are "cruelty free" eggs from chickens fed "vegetarian" (aka natural) diets.
My mom asked me once if I could eat the vegetarian fed chicken eggs...I just looked at her like "are you serious?"..and yeah...she was--why don't people get that chickens are supposed to eat a vegetarian diet? They are not supposed to be fed feed made from the spilled chum collected off the slaughter house floors (totally gross that so many livestock animals are really fed that!).

This is what I was thinking off too.
I know people who thought things like Egg Beaters were not really egg. *sigh*
So I took my lunch break and went to Whole Foods early and the dairy guy had never heard of egg-shaped faux eggs for vegans. They must have been eggs from vegetarian hens.

My (omni) roommate thought this until just recently. She would bake things and say, "Here, you can have these, I used egg replacer!" Sweet, but I was kind of frustrated to found out later that she thought egg beaters were vegan. I had to explain that they are just egg whites in carton.

And it usually says right on the carton "MADE WITH REAL EGGS."
I used to frequent a CA website called "Vegetarians in Paradise" and they have a very involved recipe for making faux "hardboiled eggs" out of tofu. I can't remember if the "yolk" was coloured tofu or something like mashed chickpeas. I do remember thinking "That's a lot of work to fake the appearance of something the person wouldn't actually eat." It was part of their "Easter menu" several years back.
Nothing against Reuben, he always answers his emails and is very informative and helpful; but VW beats ViP all hollow.
She said that you could tell they weren't real eggs because the shell was made out of something different. I don' t know, I'm confused!
I think your friend is confused. Seriously. Get more info from her because this is just freaky. I want to know what exactly she is confusing with 'vegetarian eggs'. hahah

solution: go to this store and find these.
OK, here's the "devilled egg" thing, taken entire from Vegetarians In Paradise because I can't link to it for some reason. I tried. ALL CREDIT goes to Zel and Reuben Allen at http://vegparadise.com.
I still think it's a lot of work to make something you wouldn't eat the real version of if it was offered to you.

Perhaps she thought they were different because of the brown shells?

Like what--plastic? Styrofoam?
i would think all eggs are vegetarian. vegetarians eat eggs.
that is just my smart ass remark. : )
about the deviled egg recipe above! i could not find a recipe for it, but i made up my own and i found that i liked extra firm silken tofu much better than regular firm

i think they're totally awesome. but i am just in love with deviled eggs, so it might just be in my head that they are amazing. ha. and i thought that they were really easy to make, i threw them together in a jiffy for a nice snack... mmmm... maybe i'll make some tonight... yummm.
On a side note: I got into a big argument with an employee at my local Whole Foods once, explaining that you're not a vegetarian even if the meat you're eating was vegetarian. She was pretty insistent that the beef she was sampling was "vegetarian-friendly", because the beef itself had been grain-fed. XD
(about the eggs: i haven't heard of them either)
Ask her if she'd consider eating a vegetarian person. Like Hannibal Lecter did. With fava beans and a nice Chianti, of course! ::) After all, that would be "a vegetarian" meal, wouldn't it, if you ate a vegetarian?
Vegetarian eggs? hmm I purchased powdered egg replacement that was just down right gross .. it got tossed. Dunno, maybe it was just the brand ??
There is a guy about a mile away from my home, that has happy free range chickens :)>>> If I need an egg on rare occasion I go there and buy a few, also visit the happy goats.
