Vegan meal supplement/ powder?
I am going into the hospital for a few days, and of course, food is always an issue there. There is basically NO protein sources available for vegans....except PB, which i cant eat. So, i will be subsisting on mashed potatoes and broccoli. literally.
I will be taking in some limited foods with me, but usually its impossible to get anything done on the floor at meal times and scheduled with my insulin shots...so its not easy to rely on it.
The thing is, i havent been able to eat so much for months now, i have no appetite and when i do eat, i pretty much get instantly sick. I cant afford to lose any more weight, ive lost 30 lbs in the past few months and im at my all time low since maybe 6th grade?
So, i need supplements, like Ensure, but vegan. I also wont be able to have a blender, obviously...so is there already prepared shakes (like individual ensure cans?) or powders that i can just shake up by hand?
I *can* get soymilk, even chocolate single servs!!! and silk soyogurt.
Also, can those powders be blended into other things, like cream of wheat? or another creative way of adding them to a meal plan...or other ways to get calories? Im lucky if i get 500 cals these days at all.
thanks.
I don't have anything to offer you in the way of meal supplement advice, but I do have love for you and your health. :)>>>
could you bring in almond butter or cashew butter? how about some clif bars? they've got protein and around 250 calories apiece. plus they taste like dessert!
I'm so sorry for the crappy hospital situation :( I wish you and your health all the best! I did some googling and these two seemed to come up a lot:

Sorry to hear that your having health problems. Hope you feel better soon.
Just like sea_of_green , I also read about vega. You just mix it with water and is vegan. (meal replacement)
This is what it says on the site:
Vega is a Complete Wholefood Health Optimizer an All-in-one, natural plant-based formula that provides 100% RDI of vitamins & minerals per serving. It's rich in protein, fibre, Omega 3 EFAs, antioxidants & phytonutrients. Alkaline-forming & easy to digest, Vega has no common allergens.
It also says its free of egg, dairy, gluten, soy, added sugar, wheat or yeast. Sounds as green as can possibly be. You could probably find it at any HFS. Here is their site: myvega.com
Good luck! ;)b
I've been drinking this one pretty regularly:

Good luck!
I'm a fan of vega, but the consistancy is a little off if you are just mixing it with water. I've gotten used to it though, so maybe you can too? I've stirred the plain flavor in my oatmeal before. If you can't get vega though, just get whatever you can. I'm sure whatever health food store you have will carry something. Besides soy, also look for hemp, rice & pea protien mixes. The clif bars are a good idea too.
good luck. I really hope you get better soon!
I have stirred hemp powder and/or hemp seeds into oatmeal and it tastes fine.

I've been drinking the same thing when my IBS is acting up to the point I can't get much nutrition down.
Also, I sometimes mix this or powdered fiber supplement with applesauce or soy yogurt, and it seems to require less mixing to get it to a consistency I can stand. If you'll mixing by hand, bringing some applesauce along might help.
Thanks everyone for your well wishes and ideas!! (idk why im so nervous this time around. ugh)
I tried to get the Vega, but we have pathetic HFS situation around here, so i couldnt get it, but i found something that might work.
Ill take your suggestions about trying it w/ soyogurt and applesauce, hopefully itll be palatable for me! (textures of food have been bothering me.lol.)
I used pea protein while my jaw was wired shut. Soy Protein Isolate gave me an upset stomach and the Brown Rice Protein tasted funky to me.
Good luck!
Yeah, thats what i was worried about...my stomach isnt good and alot of those overly "green" products get to me.
Good luck!!!
I like Vega and used it to help loose some weight once, but it's dreadfully expensive. It might be worth it because it's so nutritious. But if you're only concerned about protein then I would try a rice, hemp or soy protein powder that's vegan. They are cheaper and relatively easy to find around here.
LA! Let us know how you're faring if you can. I'm thinking about you, chica
