Vegan Hot Chocolate

I bought some fair trade hot chocolate at the HFS, only to realize it had milk in it when I got home!  :(
I ended up just using my baking cocoa with soymilk, and sweetening it with agave nectar. It was yummy!
I even have vegan marshmallows to put in it!

Now I found that Ghiradeli has a vegan hot chocolate at the regular grocery store....it comes in a canister and is called "double chocolate". Even the white chocolate one is vegan. I'm so excited, because I've been missing my Swiss Miss, especially since we got a heavy snowfall last night!

It seems like everywhere I go, people are enjoying hot chocolate, but its the gross packet kind with all those dry milk solids and HFCS in it. I might just have to carry my canister around everywhere I go!

Yay for hot chocolate!  I have been making an odd cup (ok, huge mug) or two this winter.  I scoured the Ghiradeli store when we were on vacation and found out the hot chocolate was vegan.  Needless to say when the weather turned cold, I snatched one up.  I have been putting dollops of Ricemellow Cream on mine since I don't have any marshmallows.

Isn't it lovely to have a warm mug of rich chocolaty goodness?  I think it is!

I have really enjoyed the VitaSoy Peppermint Chocolate soymilk warmed up. You could probably add some more chocolate to it if it wasn't chocolatey enough. Yum!

OH! I forgot! I just bought some of this for .99 at my discount HFS......before my trip...now I must bust it out and try it hot! Thanks!

Whoa!  I always do what you did, L2A, and add cocoa and sweetener to soymilk.  This sounds wonderful though!  I haven't had real hot cocoa in so long  :(

AB made athis hot chocolate mix on Good Eats one time with milk powder, and I am wondering if I can recreate with soymilk powder to have it ready-made to keep on hand. I know soymilk powder is a little fussy about dissolving, so I'm going to give it a shot (in a much smaller quantity, obviously).  I also just warmed up the chocolate-flavored soy milk once or twice last winter. Not too shabby, especially for a prepackaged convenience food!

I love cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne in my hot chocolate.

oooo, that's a good idea, because I was thinking, while I might be able to carry my canister of chocolate around just in case I want to enjoy hot chocolate on the fly, it does require milk (not water) and carrying around a box of soymilk might get a little cumbersome.  I am going to try this today (adding soymilk powder to my ghiradelli and then adding water) and will report back. Thanks for educating me! ;)

i'm so happy this thread is on here!  last night i was bringing my brother home from a meeting at around ten and he said he was hungry, so i was like, ok let's make a sandwich (grilled zucchini, avocado, tomato, baby salad greens on a whole wheat roll with salad dressing, yum!) and then after i got this crazy idea for hot chocolate:
1/3 large bar of g and b maya gold melted into 3 cups of rice milk.  they make a maya gold hot cocoa mix, but it is not vegan.  and we had the chocolate and rice milk on hand, i just whisked it over med/low for a few minutes, and it was delish! very nice with gingerbread cookies!

now my mind is going all types of places, with "milk" and chocolate combos.  i think next is hazelnut milk with plain dark chocolate, and maybe a little vanilla and cinnamon.

I almost forgot to post this!  I LOVE hot chocolate and drink it almost daily.  But I'm trying to cut back on my Swiss Miss since it has dairy.  After reading this thread last night I really wanted some hot chocolate.  Last Christmas my coworkers bought me a three pack of Godiva hot chocolate.  One is milk chocolate, one is chocolate chai and one is dark chocolate.  It's been sitting in my cabinet, barely touched, for a year now.  Last night I went down to look at the ingredients.  Milk chocolate...has milk obviously, the chai had milk too, but the dark chocolate didn't!  I made myself a big mug with silk soymilk and a dash of cinnamon.  It was sooooo yummy.  I had another one later that night a put a splash of amaretto in it, mmmmmmmmmmm.

Last night, I was contemplating visiting the liquor store to find something to put in my hot chocolate.  Though it could have been the temperature of 14 degrees (for a high) driving me to it.

Gahhhh, the best thing about Christmas being over is that the Vitasoy peppermint is mad cheap at my grocery store!
I picked some up to try for the first time.
Sweet, chocolaty, minty happiness and wonderfulness in a glass, that's all I have to say.
I told my omni family to keep their hands off  :P
*hoards preciousssssss soy milk in Gollum-esque manner*

I can't wait to have some heated up  :D

Yeah, I think I discovered the Ghirardelli stuff on PETA's accidentally vegan list.  The hazelnut flavor is really good.  But I ran out and tried the same thing you did, L2A: soymilk with 1 Tb of cocoa powder and 1Tb of agave nectar (got the idea from reviews of the Piping Hot Cocoa recipe on here).  It really hit the spot!

BTW, just to stir up a brownie-like controversy, marshmallow (vegan or not) in hot chocolate is wrong!  ;)

*cough* agreed. You people with your marshmallows-in-cocoa and your fudgy brownies disgust me

Hmmmmmmm.  Not sure where I stand on this one.  All I know is that those dinky marshmallows in the cocoa mix that melt instantaneously when you pour the water in are a crime.  :P

L2A, did you ever make up the dry mix? I made a small serving today (just used approx. the same ratio, but tablespoons instead of cups, and small amounts of cornstarch and salt, etc.) with the Better than Milk soy milk powder. (That's the only powdered soy milk I've ever been able to find around here, but whatever.) Anyway, it turned out great! I didn't fill the mug halfway with the dry mixture, more like 1/3, but I dumped that in, poured in an equal amount of hot water, stirred to dissolve, and then filled the rest of the way with hot water. Perfect! No lumps or anything. I think something like this will work very well for your needs.

yanno, I never did, but thanks for reminding me! It has been warmer here lately, so I think I sort of forgot! I have the same soymilk powder. Mine is really old-like maybe 6 years old. Do you think that matters?  ???

So it works! We went to a Cold festival and I brought a little container of better than soymilk powder mixed with some vegan hot chocolate mix. I asked a place for some hot water and made my own! This is great, because usually we pass on the Swiss Miss stuff people give out around town and festivals. So now my purse will be filled with an emergency container of the mix just in case. :)
