vegan fast food...

can somebody give me the scoop on vegan fast food or eating out?  its so hard to know what's in everything...but i'm sure everybody has their favorite spots...

Also, a big problem with Subway is that they rarely change their gloves.  Even if you asked them to change them, I'm sure that there will be meat juice on the veggies from the other sandwiches that they made.

Don't tell me that, Subway has so many happy memories for me...not that I ever go, but the option is nice.
:'(
My mouth started watering thinking of those spicy peppers they have...I think possibly none of their bread is vegan, too.
Oh, and at Chipotle you get to watch as they make your food. I guess there's still the problem of the gloves.

I get that there's the glove problem. I also get that I'm not as strict because I will buy things that are "processed in a facility that also processes eggs and milk" or whatnot, but I do what I can. I really eat "fast food" so infrequently, and usually in a pinch (when I'm starving and going to be on a 1-2 hour train ride, and it's not healthy to just sit there and starve because then I'll be inclined to eat too much later) so I just keep that in my head "I'm doing the best I can".

I learned that when I asked for one without cheese or sour cream. There was a ton of sour cream on that thing. Bleh.

And BK veggie burgers have dairy, totally disapointing, they're just a morningstar veggie burger. I lived off them when i ate dairy, and right after finishing the last one i had i learned about it.

Here in NZ there is no veggie burger, they just make one with salad and onion rings in it (I read on that website that the onion rings are vegan) so I've tried to go by the theory that if I have to get fast food for whatever reason, then asking for one of those without cheese or mayo would suffice.

The theory is nice, but the servers are actually idiots. I ask for no cheese and no mayo, they repeat it back to me, they make the food, hand it to me, I check again and they confirm, I take it to eat and find they've left out either cheese OR mayo. It's like they can only hold one bit of info at a time, leaving two whole things out is just too much for them!  >:(

The italian bread is vegan according to the webite helpline. I emailed them.

As a side note the one posative aspect of El Paso, TX, is the fact that their Subway's have guagamole you can spread on your bread for an extra $1!

so I just keep that in my head "I'm doing the best I can".

You know what.... that is all you can do. There will always be someone telling you....that isn't this or that, or you haven't done this or that.............. but at the end of the day if you can say to yourself I did the best I could then you should sleep soundly and feel good about yourself. If everyone in the world could do that this place would be a whole lot better if you ask me!

I always ask for fresh gloves at subway. Sometimes I pretend that its for my friend that I am ordering for so that they dont hate ME...but my 'friend" who is no where to be seen. I can be very passive aggressive at times.  :D  I've thought about how the veggies probably aren't the purist but again, doint the best I can do.

Here's a chain restaurant guide from PETA: http://www.vegcooking.com/ChainRestaurants.asp
Unfortunately, like most of PETA's web pages, there's no date; so you can't tell how current the info is.  >:(

Sage advice there.

And cross the street.

Tip well, drive happy!

There is a way of ordering a "veggie whopper" at Burger King too. It isn't their veggie burger but it is all the toppings of the whopper on a bun, which I'm pretty sure is dairy free. No cheese and no mayo and that's as vegan as you can get. The fries don't have animal ingredients and are fried in a fryer designated for potatoes so they shouldn't come out tasting like chicken.

edit to add: I've done the same thing at Wendy's too.

Hehe, but maybe they just think you're psychotic and want to get you out of there without having any problems! I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to ask them to change gloves...I tend to be aggressive rather than passive aggressive, and would hate to get banned from Subway if they refused a polite request and I persisted.

Good to know about the Italian bread. I typically have gotten the whole wheat...just...because...
I guess I value my health a little above the lives of poor little bees.

No one has ever denied my request for clean gloves! Sometimes they are really nice about it and mostly they just silently take off the old, meaty gloves. I am lucky that usually my DH goes and gets us subway and he asks (well, he says he does and I trust him mostly!).  ::)

Just say "would you mind changing your gloves for a veggie sub?" .....they can't ban you for that!!!

this thread is making me sad, I've been eating most of this stuff.

Another good place is pita pit/extreme pita, or tacotime. Tacotime makes everything fresh right in front of you, and if you don't get dairy they'll pretty much put whatever else you want on your burrito for no extra charge . Watch out for the cheese tortillas though.

I looked into subway bread too, and anything without the cheese on it (or honey) is vegan.

Harveys makes a DAM good veggie burger. As far as I know, it's vegan, but I should double check because now I'm so unsure of myself...

You're trying and you didn't know. Seriously, check out the thread that Hespedal posted a page or two back; it's really helpful

I haven't read this whole thread, but the only bread at Subway that is vegan is the white/Italian.

from Subway.com:
"Do your breads contain animal products?

SUBWAY® Italian bread contains no animal-derived ingredients. The wheat bread and deli roll contain honey, which may be considered an animal-derived ingredient. The Parmesan Oregano and other cheese-topped breads do contain milk-derived ingredients.

What menu items at SUBWAY® restaurants are vegan/do not contain animal-derived ingredients?

The menu items that do not contain any animal-derived ingredients are the Veggie Delite® on Italian bread and the Veggie Delite® salad. Also these individual items also do not contain animal-derived ingredients: all vegetables, oil, vinegar, mustard, sweet onion sauce and Fruizle. The wheat bread and deli roll contain honey but no other animal-derived ingredients. "

wow thanks for the update. those bastards lied to me. I called the 1-800 number and everything.
They proably weren't thinkng about the stuff that is actually in the bread dough itself. I'm going to tell people that I have a religious issue against eating animal products, that seems to be the only way they'll get off their asses and ACTUALLY check. Or allerigies.. nobody wants a lawsuit to deal with.
