vegan fast food...

can somebody give me the scoop on vegan fast food or eating out?  its so hard to know what's in everything...but i'm sure everybody has their favorite spots...

I don't have the answer, but I want to know, too!

Like, are Taco Bell's beans vegetarian? Does McDonald's have a veggie burger? When I'm stuck and HAVE to get fast food.... what should I look for?

Good topic! I'm ready to take notes!

Vegan Fast Food is an oxymoron.  There really is no such thing.  If you trust a fast food place to not cross contaminate then you might try things like Burger King's french fries or Subway's veggie max pattie or Taco Bell's been burrito.

Other than that, find a small local restaurant that you can get familiar with the manager, owner and cooks.  That way you might have a better chance of getting something vegan from friendly helpful people.

If you dont mind just veggie; then BK Veggie Burger should work.  I believe McDeath has nothing but ketchup for vegans.  Yum!  *scrapes off the sarcasm with a shovel*

Yeah I'm afraid of anything McDonald's sells and I don't trust fries from any fast food place.  I have heard from many sources that the beans at Taco Bell are fine so in a pinch I have them make a bean burrito sans cheese and/or their triple layer nachos with just beans and sauce or a mexican pizza with no cheese and sub beans for meat.  My local taco bell is pretty good about getting it right.  Subway is a good one too - their bread is okay and you can load up the veggies.  I also don't tend to trust veggie burgers out unless I can verify they are vegan since so many aren't but occassionally I get lucky.  I make sure I have a pb&j or lara bar with me if I'm worried but occasionally I have found great things in a pinch more from convenience stores than fast food.

I don't think that is vegan.

Also, a big problem with Subway is that they rarely change their gloves.  Even if you asked them to change them, I'm sure that there will be meat juice on the veggies from the other sandwiches that they made.

I also hear that Taco Bell's beans and guac should be ok.

Not sure if it's 100% vegan, but I sorta like Taco Hell's 7 layer burrito minus sour cream, cheese... and loaded with sauce (is the sauce vegan??? )
I only go for it occasionally and I'm pleased to see it listed on KMK's link.

I can assure everyone that Taco Bell's beans are vegan. The guacamole and hot sauce is too. They don't specify whether the sugar used in the guac is cane or beet but I think it's safe to assume cane so that can be an issue. The rice at Taco Bell has casein though, so weird. It is made with veggie broth so it's safe for the lacto-veg-heads. So start leaving the rice off the 7 layer burritos for a vegan culinary experience. The cinnamon twists are vegan!

I wouldn't trust french fries at any fast food place though because they use frozen fries and often the ingredients list lard on frozen fries.

Waaaahhhhhh  :'(
Maybe someone should tell the peeps at the site KMK posted the link for. Damn, I knew it was too good to be true. I'll take comfort in the fact that it's at least veggie broth.

Dudes, I went to Taco Bell the other day and ordered 2 bean burritos. We got home to eat, and I opened the burrito, which was clearly wrapped as BEAN BURRITO on the label (I checked before we left the drive-thru)... but when I took a bite IT WAS BEEF.

I wanted to throw up and/or shake someone. It didn't even say beef on the wrapper, so it's not like they just picked up the wrong one. They totally put BEEF instead of BEANS. I made my boyfriend call their area manager, but obviously he just had to leave a message and didn't get a reply. He also emailed them, I think...

It made me sooooo mad.... I'm very anti-Taco Bell right now. ALWAYS OPEN YOUR BURRITOS BEFORE YOU BITE!

I guess I might get over it... but still.

OH! And just so you know, the rice at On The Border Mexican Restaurant is made with chicken broth. I was SO glad the server told me that when I ordered the avocado burrito they had going. She was an awesome server. We gave her a big tip.

There was something else I wanted to say..... what was it.... I forget.

A server did that for me once, too. I was very upset because I had my heart set on something, but then I was grateful that the person told me the truth. Yay for nice people :)

Did you tip big? Because you totally should. Otherwise they get grumpy... and grumpy servers are NOT helpful to anyone.

I used to be a hostess... so I know they get grumpy.

>:( <----- grumpy server who didn't get phat tips.

This totally happened to me a few months ago.  I DID almost puke and it took hours to get the taste out.  It tasted like bile, UGH.

I don't see it on your ingredient list Meggs. Perhaps they've changed the recipe? My ingredient info is from 2004 and it looks like in your ingredient list the only difference is the sodium caseinate has been removed. My ingredient list is here: http://www.shwatchdog.org/images/tacobell-ingredients.pdf

Fast food should always be a last resort for this reason. I was nearing the end of a cheeseless bean burrito and found a big chunk of chicken. I was very surprised to say the least.

Yes, my dear, I always tip big unless I get really poor service, and even then I leave 10%. If you're extra nice, I leave over 20%. I feel for the servers.

Whew! My list is from 10/08 and I got it from http://www.yum.com/nutrition/documents/tb_ingredient_statement.pdf
Which is from: http://www.veganeatingout.com/tacobell.html

Hooray! 5 Layer Burrito it is!

Yeah, man, but every so often, I just get this insatiable urge for "bad" food. I've even had that happen at like, WF salad/hot bar, though- someone drops a piece of chicken in the quinoa salad or something... always look, no matter where, Taco Bell or anywhere!

I always tip well, even if I don't get great service.  I can't help it, it's just how I am.

I hate it when people don't tip well.  Katie's dad is notorious for this, but he (apparently) doesn't think he's tipping bad.  Katie and her mom won't tell him that it isn't a good tip either because they don't want to make him upset or hurt his feelings.  Drives me crazy, and Katie and I usually end up tipping a little extra.  Oh by the way, he can't see us tipping either.

As an ex-server (from many, MANY restaurants) I say thank you. So do all the other servers out there: http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/2008/01/24/a-friendly-tip-from-your-waitress/

I learned that when I asked for one without cheese or sour cream. There was a ton of sour cream on that thing. Bleh.

And BK veggie burgers have dairy, totally disapointing, they're just a morningstar veggie burger. I lived off them when i ate dairy, and right after finishing the last one i had i learned about it.
