I've never heard of this before. What is it?
I thought they discontinued that long ago. I never got to try it!!! I really dig the mock tuna salad recipe on here:
http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=7578
I eat the whole recipe in one sitting when I make it ::)
It's vegan tuna. I bought some of the last cans in the store last week.
I occassionally crave tuna melts. The taste wasn't exact, but I put in a LOT of relish, so it didn't matter. I've seen tuna recipes, but they use finely chopped vegetables without added protein. The protein in Tuno was small TVP flakes (not small TVP chunks). I'm not sure how to approximate this. If you've had Gardenburger's Herb Crusted Cutlet, it has similarly sized flakes, but Tuno flakes are not as thin.
Honestly... I miss tuna salad sandwiches a lot. It's the one thing that made it hard for me to go veg. I don't think there's anything vegetarian out there that will replicate it successfully so I don't even bother. It's one thing that I know I had to leave behind, but I'll live :D
In saying that, if there is a really good replica out there... texture, flavour etc.. send it my way.
Ramabanana - The Mock Tuna Salad looks good. I might substitute plain soy yogurt for the mayo/tofu and add a couple flakes of seaweed powder. Thanks for posting it.
Does anyone have a good brand of small TVP flakes? I shop at an entirely vegetarian grocery store and I haven't seen small flakes there, just the small granules.
Thanks.
I used to buy Tuno. I now make mashed chickpeas with my own homemade vegan mayo. I have to say it tastes exactly the same, if not better.
Davedrum, what do you put in your homemade mayo?
Yes, I would also be interested in your homemade vegan mayo, Dave! I tried a commercial brand once, and it was just so-so.
I agree with ramabanana on that recipe. I am so glad I am not the only person who has to eat the entire batch in a sitting. Untuna melts with it are great. It usually doesn't last me long enough to get that done, however. I like it with saltines for dipping.
Here's one recipe from Vegan Planet for Soy Mayo (I hope it's ok to post it here... I give this book away all the time as a gift, so maybe the publishers will forgive me this once given that I have paid for the book about 15 times now ;))
6 oz firm silken tofu, drained
1 1/2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
pinch of sugar or natural sweetener (optional)
3 tablespoons canola or other neutral-tasting oil
1. Place the tofu, vinegar, mustard, salt, and sugar in a food processor or blender and process until smooth. With the machine running, slowly add the oil. Process until incorporated. Taste and adjust the seasonings.
2. Transfer to a glass jar or other container with a tight-fitting lid. Cover and refridgerate until ready to use, up to 4 or 5 days.
For those that asked, I was about to post my recipe....but hey.....Well...there you go!....the recipe that Ungreen is so similar to the one I make (thanks for saving me the time ungreen) :). I got my recipe from Vegan Vittles. I have just "tweaked" it to my liking (like I do with everything I make). The only big difference I see is that I use "apple cider" vinegar as opposed to white vinegar..and I use a good bit more then 1 1/2 tablespoons....more like 4 or 5 tablespoons.... ;) Play around with it...it works!
*edit*
I just wanted to add, you really want to let it chill for a few hours before you use it. It will thicken up a bit by then.....ds

OH MY GOD! why the eff are they discontinuing it, those bastards, well you can copy it if you have texturized soy protein, and at most oriental shops, especially if there is a korean store by you, you can buy kelp, kelp is a very thick and dense seaweed used mostly for soup stock and brewing, it's to tough to eat. That's what they use to give it a fishy flavor. Actually you can even buy it online at an oriental food mart.

Kellogg's bought Worthington several years ago. It was before I quit to go back to school (2003) so I want to say that happened sometime in late 2001 or early 2002.
This is just a suggestion, but I've done it before on other products. Read the back of the can for ingredients. They are listed in order of amount as they appear in the product: the first ingredient listed is the most prominent. Assemble the ingredients that Worthington Farms use, then experiment until you have your favorite proportions.
I just think the phrase "UnTuna Melt" is funny ;D
Come on people it's vegan cheese
....
so it's a "UnTuna UnMelt" LOL!!!!!!! ;) ;D :D
Hey All--so I have never heard of "Tuno" either so I did a little internet search and I found it on the Morning Star Farms website--I have been there in the recent past and never saw it--is it possible that Morning Star is taking it over? I pruchase MSF all the time but have never even seen this product in the asile--well, I hope they do take over, one more thing for me to try!

OK--I just emailed MSF and asked them about this while Tuno crisis--hopefully tey will email me soon with the answer! :)
I looked for Tuno at Wild Oats today after reading this thread but didn't see it. (Is it already discontinued?) If not, where would I find it in the health food store. It wasn't' with the other canned tunas...
i bought it last year sometime with a msf label in the 'natural foods' canned section at a krogers in michigan, i only saw it a couple times and then they stopped carrying it.. probably cus the cans that i bought were dusty from sitting there so long..
i also have a couple cans of 'skallops' that i have yet to crack open until i figure out exactly what i should do with them. any ideas?
Still no answer from MSF... :-[
