Tofu is safe right?

Hello I was thinking about what to bring with me to school for dinner tomorrow and was wondering if it is okay to eat tofu without cooking it first?  I'm pretty sure it is but I want to check.  I'm going to put it in my lunchbox w/an icepack to keep it cold.

According to Jo Stepaniak, water packed tofu should be cooked before eating.  See her explanation here:

thanks for all the wonderful suggestions in this thread!
next time i think i'll be a little more creative with an oily/salty type of dish and drink some water before i've outdone myself.
i've also on a whim picked up mung beans (to make into paste) and salted bamboo in chili oil.
i think i can do something innovative with both those things and the suggestions.

on that note, does anyone use salted bamboo? i was thinking of just sticking it in casseroles or curry for most day to day consumption. but otherwise, i'm a little lost on what to do with it.

I have used uncooked tofu to make the Tofu Chocolate Puddin on this site and it's pretty good, but of course you keep it refrigerated. (And it never lasts long enough to spoil, anyways). And I've eaten tofu gan as is, straight from the package, but that's smoked so maybe it's different.

if you have a george forman grill (or something close) you can grill it up fast and take it with you--or you can bake it the night before too--eating it raw probably would be pretty gross :p

I eat as I'm cutting every time I cook tofu...haven't gotten sick yet...yum yum. If you freeze and thaw it first, it's even better!

I don't really get this. What about other water-packed foods (like some noodles, or soft cheese )? Or pasteurized, liquidy foods sealed in a similar type of container (milk or oj)? It just seems like pasteurizing and sealing a food has no point if you've still got potentially harmful levels of bacteria in there.

I always eat raw tofu. lol. I do it without even thinking. Just like, as I'm making it I usually eat about 1/4 of it before I cook it.

Hehe, yeah, I do that too, but wasn't going to be the first to admit it. I've even eaten half a block or more. But I hardly ever get it.

I eat tofu raw. Are you not supposed to do that?

Define "supposed to." I figure it's like the person who told me you "can't" make hummus out of green lentils. I do it all the time...and it's delicious. You dun like it, dun eat it.  ;D

I definitely eat tofu without cooking it. This is what I put on top of my salad.

I don't really get this.

Honestly, I don't get it either.  I wish she had some references to back it up, because it doesn't make that much sense to me.

When I was in Syracuse there was as "oriental supermarket" where I would get fresh tofu, made daily.  Ohhh...my....Gosh...it was so good.  I ate that all the time uncooked and plain, gave it too my son too, he loved it!

The regular tofu from the grocery store in a tub though, no, I agree, nasty.

Raw by itself I can't do it although I would eat it as in egg salad and dips.
