Sweet Potato Pie recipe, please and thank you.

I am looking for THE BEST sweet potato pie. Now, I've had my fair share of sweet potato pie in my day so I'm not looking for a generic recipe. Give me TRIED AND TRUE recipes, like hespy's thread asking for pumpkin pie.

Is there a difference.  You couldn't just a hespy pie recipe and substitute sweet potatoes?  *ducks in case the answer is absolutely not*

I don't know. I've never made it before, which is why I'm asking.

BUT SERIOUSLY, GUYS. 77 views and ONE response? You all suck

No, it's a pie. Looks a lot like pumpkin pie, only it tastes a billion times better.

I do not see the point of this 'sweet potato pie.' You see, pumpkin alone is not very tasty  - it needs sugar and spices and all other sorts of crap to be tasty. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, taste good just the way nature made them... well, you know, cooked too.

But if you insist, this recipe was cited as "tried and true" on another website:

http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=25961

on the other hand, i have never been steered wrong by a PETA recipe:

http://www.vegcooking.com/recipeshow.asp?RequestID=489&Search=sweet+potato+pie

wait a damn minute... they're the same recipe! well that settles it.

i looked around at other search results, and most others had odd ingredients - pineapple juice and vegan cream cheese and such. those things might be tasty, but i think it's safer to stick to basics to get a 'traditional' pie

Sweet Potao Sheera is one of the best simple sweets I have always loved.
The recipe is simple.
Add 1/2 the amount of sugar to mashed boiled sweet potatoes. Add  about quarter spoon of Cardamom powder
stir well and enjoy after setting in a plate and let it be in fridge for couple of hours.
Cut small slabs and enjoy.
You can start with about 1 pound of S.Potato and half a pound of sugar and a quarter to half tsp of cardamom powder.

Weight watchers ....this is not for you please. :nono:

I just put some sweet potatoes in the oven to make a pie later on today.  If it comes out well I will let you know and post the recipe... if you are still looking for one.

I use my pumpkin pie recipe, swap in cooked sweet potatoes, and double the spices.  Sometimes I use brown sugar in place of white sugar, because sweet potatoes can stand up to that kind of flavor.  Depends on what I have.

It's my hubby's favorite pie.

For those of you who haven't tried it, I highly recommend it ... it's WONDERFUL.

I just looked through your submitted recipes to see if you had submitted the pumpkin pie recipe, but didn't see it. I would love the recipe with the sweet potatoes!

However, I did see that the cauliflower with lemon-garlic bread crumbs recipe is yours! We really liked that one. I also bookmarked your blog.  :)

Hee hee, thanks -- I will try to UPDATE it once in a while.  I've been bad.

I didn't mean "my very own pumpkin pie recipe," so much as "the one I have handy."

To tell you the truth, I use the recipe on the Libby's pumpkin can and double the spices there.  I've always veganized it the lazy way: ground-flax-and-water for eggs (blended tofu once, worked fine), Silk creamer for evaporated milk.  Also, our family ALWAYS doubles the spices (so for the sweet potato pie, you'd be quadrupling them from the Libby's original.)

Here's a link to the Libby's:
http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/detail.aspx?ID=18470

And here it is with my mods:

    * 3/4 cup granulated sugar
    * 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 1 teaspoon ground ginger
    * 1/4 to /2 teaspoon ground cloves (careful doubling cloves... they can add up fast)
    * vegan equivalent of 2 eggs (1/2 cup water and 4 tablespoons ground flax, or 1/2 cup blended silken tofu work fine)
    * 1 can (15 oz.) pumpkin (or 2 cups smoothly mashed, cooked sweet potatoes -- if using sweet potatoes, double the spices in this recipe)
    * 1 1/2 cups Silk creamer or other vegan cream
    * 1 unbaked 9-inch (4-cup volume) deep-dish pie shell (trust me, you do not want a recipe for pie crust for me... I fail at pie crust)

Directions:
MIX sugar, cinnamon, salt, ginger and cloves in small bowl. Beat egg substitute in large bowl. Stir in pumpkin and sugar-spice mixture. Gradually stir in vegan cream.

POUR into pie shell.

BAKE in preheated 425° F oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350° F; bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours. Serve immediately or refrigerate.

Thanks! I've saved all of that. Maybe I'll make the sweet potato version for Thanksgiving!  :P

Hi Y'all;
Well I don't know if I make the "best" sweet potato pie but I make one that is pretty good. It is NOT that healthy but it is simple:

3 large sweet potatoes, baked in the skin, cooled, peeled and mashed
2 Large eggs
1 can evaporated milk
1/2 cup sweetener
1t allspice
1 t. nutmeg

Mix well pour into a pie crust and bake at 375 degrees until knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Hi Treehugger:
Yes this is a vegan site.  I made this Sunday and used soymilk and vegan egg replcement. Cooking is a big part of my job. I cook for 3 different families and have become so accustomed to using vegan for animal that I don't give it a second thought. That was an oversight on my part.
tamilee

P.S. The recipe should read 1/2 t allspice and 1/2 t nutmeg.

Did you ever make a pie secondbase?

I made the vegcooking recipe this weekend, with a few adjustments. I used full-fat coconut milk instead of soy (recommended!), light brown sugar instead of white because I didn't have molasses and agave instead of molasses on the off chance that leaving it out would affect the texture. I increased the sugar by 50% cause all the other recipes I found had at least twice what was called for in this recipe- I wouldn't do any less. Nixed the cardamom cause I don't like it/don't have it, and i think that's it... The filling was absolutely incredible! DR liked the blender clean. The baked pie, though, did not hold it's form when once sliced and plated. I was disappointed as this is the same problem i've always had with vegan pumpkin pies- I had hoped it would work better with sweet potato as it's so much starchier. Oh well. I used Wholesome something-or-another brand organic whole wheat crust, which I would prefer a littler sweeter, and not as dry and crumbly. Whichever recipe you use, do yourself a favor and roast your sweet potatoes instead of boiling them. No amount of sugar can replicate the beautiful caramelization of those natural sugars. Plus no peeling, and you can eat the yummy skins!

Anyway, I'd like to know if you have better luck!

I was looking for a raw pumpkin pie recipe yesterday and I came across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFyKc5-3BF0

They call it a "Pumpkin Pie" but it's actually made with sweet potatoes. I thought the crust look rocksome though - apricots, almonds, and oat groats = the killah. I think I'll make it soon.

How about your pie secondbase?
