Scones

Okay. So here's the thing.
Before my family became vegan, my mom used to always make these REALLY amazing scones. You know the scones that are soft, bready, and you put jam and breakfast condiments on them. Well anyways. I can't find a vegan recipe for it. So PLEASE help me and post a comment as soon as possible because I'm really craving my tasty scones and I want to make some for today!

Anyways. HELP ME PLEASEEEEEEEEEE! :-\

I've never actually made a scone and I've only eaten one a couple times, but maybe you could take a look at some of the recipes listed above.

Or, take your favorite recipe and "veganize" it with soymilk, Ener-G and maple syrup.

Have fun!

I'm lucky because the Whole Foods by me has fresh-baked (are they baked? I don't even know a thing about scones) chocolate chip scones from a vegan bakery in Chicago.  mmmmmm.

Good luck.

this is my favorite scone recipe. use oil instead of the butta-- works well! they are light and tender and good to slather in anything your heart desires.

I'll second Baybpuppy's Really Good Raisin Scones recipe. Sometimes I sprinke the tops with cinnamon sugar, or turbinado sugar. Other times I'll use chocolate chips or dried cranberries instead of raisins.

I'll third the Really Good Raisin Scones. Everyone who has made them has contributed their own combinations of additions. Bookpapa and I had some last night. Currently in the freezer we have cranberry-coconut. Bookpapa toasted them to defrost them and they were GREAT! Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. We top them with Clotted Cashew Cream (now almost a staple of ours) from this site http://consciouskitchen.blogspot.com/ (go to the May 2 posting). Just gimme a spoon! :D

I'm used to bready scones too. I'm not sure whether scones are something different in America or if I'm a terrible cook but when I've made scones from vegweb they've turned out hard and biscuity.

Here's a veganised recipe of a kiwi classic:
3 cups plain flour
6 tsps baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
5 tblsps margarine
1 to 1 1/2 cups milk (soy, rice etc)
extra milk

Sift dry ingredients. Cut margarine in until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add milk and mix quickly with a knife. Knead a few times. Spread scone dough out onto lightly dusted (with flour) oven tray and cut into 12 pieces. Spread pieces apart so they have room to rise and brush the top of each scone with the milk of your choice. Bake at 220 C (428 F) for 10 mins or until golden brown.

Variations: Add 3/4 cup vegan cheese and a pinch of cayenne pepper and mustard to flour, top with grated cheese for "cheese" scones.
Add 3/4 cup chopped dates, 1 tblsp sugar and a pinch of cinnamon to flour, top with sugar and cinnamon for date scones.
Add 3/4 cup sultanas for sultana scones.

Okaii. Thanks a BUNCH for all your help. I'm from Canada, and NO OFFENCE, but I don't really like those hard biscuits type scones. I like the bready ones that you eat for breakfast with jam or margerine.
So I'm probably going to try the recipe from BCSH. And I'll try everyone elses, too. Thanks so much!

In defense of the Really Good Raisin Scones, I've never thought they were hard or biscuit-y. Of course, I've never had a "real," i.e. British scone, so I don't have anything to compare it to except commercial American scones. :-\

Baypuppy, yeh I changed it. My eyes are looking in a different direction and my boyfriend is facing forward instead of facing me. How very observant of you to notice. I'm thinking of changing it to the tortoise sex pic in my gallery though - that's just plain funny.

BCSH: Is a scone and a pikelet basically the same thing?? (I have read a lot of NZ-based Mills and Boons in my time, :-[ and they're always in them,  but never actually seen one.)

A scone is more like dense bread and a pikelet is like a a smaller sweeter pancake. In NZ, Edmonds (every house has a Edmonds Cookbook) Pancakes have no sugar or baking powder and have less salt than pikelets. Both pikelets and plain scones are often served with whipped cream and jam. However date scones, raisin scones and cheese scones are served with butter. Wikipedia says UK scones (same as NZ scone, I believe) are like US biscuits.

Yup, and an NZ and OZ "cookie" is what is called a "bar" in the US, and our "cookies" are your "biscuits"...and the original French word "bis cuit" means "twice baked."  ???

Countries divided by a common language...who was it who said that? GB Shaw? ;)

Probably.  I love Shaw--so funny, and a vegetarian to boot!

I think we also pronounce "scone" differently.  In the U.S. it rhymes with "stone."  I once offered a scone to an Englishman and he didn't know what I was talking about.  He finally said, "Oh, scaaaan!" (rhymes with "on").  Then when he had one, he said it wasn't a scone; it was too sweet--"Scones are like your biscuits."

Ah, well.  I never met a scone I didn't like.

BCSH--I just made those scones today for my family and they RAVED about them.  they are WAY better than the crispy mass-produced scones my grandparents have fed us :)

not sure if this is quite what your'e looking for but Isa has an orange glazed scone recipe in VwaV that is quite excellent. We use something that tastes similar but is a very different recipe at the bakery and I absolutely love them.

That orange-glazed scone sounds delicious. Thank you for that. I love trying new scone recipes and will have to check that out.

I really love the Really Good Raisin Scones recipe on this site. Now I'm looking to bake for someone who requested a scone with no processed sugar.

Does anyone have a great scone recipe that doesn't use processed sugar?
