Most arent. Just check the ingredients, many of them have whey or something. Smart balance light and earth balance are vegan.

There's also a brand called Nucoa that's vegan... and it's a lot cheaper. I like Earth Balance but it's so expensive, usually $5-6 a tub. The nucoa is $1.99 for the tub or the pack of four blocks, and it cooks and tastes totally fine. =)

Fleishman's UNSALTED margarine is vegan, but the salted is NOT, it is less that $2 a pound around here. If you are baking, often I use a solid pure vegetable shortening like Crisco, is is widely available and super cheap.

but the beauty of EB is that it's not hydrogenated.

Yeah, I personally use nucoa. Most stores have it actually. I use it when I cook my pancakes and in all of my recipes that call for "soy butter" or "soy margarine" and it's great! It doesn't burn either which is awesome and it's fairly inexpensive. It's strange to me; margarine is commonly known as vegetable shortening but nucoa and specialty vegan brands are the only kind that actually don't have milk derivatives.

nucoa in the tub and the couple of smart balances i have tried were non-hydro, as well. the sicks of nucoa are hydrogenated.
