persimmon smell?

Do persimmons have a certain smell to anyone else?  I don't want to reveal what I think they smell like for fear of embarrassing myself if no one else smells it---but I think if anyone smells what I smell, they'll know what I'm talking about...

LOL--it doesn't get more vague than that!

Are they in season?  I'll go look for one and give it a good sniff if they are.

Now I'm curious... I know that I don't like persimmons, but I want to know what you think they smell like! Tell tell!

Yeah, they're in season.

I googled around and found this yahoo answers question that tells me I am not alone at least (though some of the answers seem to imply not everyone smells it):

And in the comment section of this blog:

To me it is very distinctive...every persimmon I eat smells this way..and over multiple seasons (though I have only eaten fuyus).

Well, at least I'm not completely alone :)

Maybe different men's smell differently...and some men's smell like persimmon!

LMAO!  ;D

Now I'm definitely going to find one (even though it's like rubbernecking an accident).

I always thought they smelled a little like a musky woman, if you'll pardon the cheap-romance-novel-imagery. Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorite fruits, but they do have an interesting smell.

FWIW, I think that properly diluted bleach water smells a lot like s3men, especially when I get it (bleach water, you perverts) on my skin.

They're in season in S. Europe. I keep trying to like them and not managing it. To me, they are just slimey and tasteless. And sort of rough in the mouth. NMSOT (Not My Sort of Thing).

Blech! I know... I bought one from my co-op a few weeks ago. It was so pretty & I was sure I would love it, but nope. It was gooey & bland, and really unappealing (to me, personally ;)). I couldn't make myself eat more than a few bites.

okay, i never smelt sperm.

i must be a looooser  >:(  8)  ;)

;D I don't think I have ever noticed a smell, either... Hmmm. This is weird to "talk" about while I am eating my breakfast. Ew.

On their own they're gross (except to my mom who eats them straight-up), but they make really good, moist cookies.

hm...I have a pretty keen sense of smell, and I can detect the most subtle differences in....stuff......depending on what he's been eating lately (if it's enough to make a difference, that is).  Now I'm REALLY curious about persimmons...I'll bet, if anything, I'd be able to come up with some other smell comparison based on my incredible smelling skills...but I have a feeling that this preconceived notion of their smell, based on what I've read so far, might influence my perception.  eh, anyway....

what first caught interest in these little fruits was a post on FFVK with a recipe for persimmon bread, which looked absolutely delightful.

I don't think I've seen any around here, but perhaps this recipe would be of interest for summa you folks...?

* YAY! I figured out how to do a text hyperlink!!

Rename the fruit 'persemen'?

P.S...  Ew.  ::)

P.P.S.  Dried persemen persimmon slices are much tastier than fresh.

I must say, I've always considered persimmons the sexiest of fruits. So much so that eating them always seems naughty, but I've never thought they smelled like boy parts. At all. Girl parts, yes.  ;)

A ha! So someone agrees with me on this!

Completely. And so much so that I'll admit to frequently blushing when eating a perfectly ripe persimmon. Soft, juicy, labial. Yes, I said labial. Yummy and very naughty. In a good way...

That's a good question. The answer is kind of complicated because the different varieties are ripe differently. The fuyus are smaller, harder, and sort of apple-y in texture. For my persimmon deviance, I like the hachiyas, which are ripe when they feel extremely soft.

As soon as I find one of these fruits I will report back to this thread!!! The subject has me intrigued!

I used to hate persimmons because of their texture, but that was before I had anything to compare the smell to =)
I guess I've only had the hachiyas, (since they were soft when ripe) but they are very sweet--maybe if they are tasteless you got them from the wrong store? I haven't had one in a while--when they come into season I'll have to get one and sniff it...
