marshmallow peeps!

Does anyone miss those gelatinized marshmallow peeps that are oh-so famous during this time of the year?  Just curious!  Boy, those things sure are sugary!

I am guessing the vegan recipe version would be:  vegan marshmallows + raw sugar!

I remember as a kid putting these in the microwave and watching them grow.  Then after a day of eating a few of these and feeling sick to my belly, the whole pack would go stale.  *oh the memories*  ::)

I'm glad to say that I don't miss marshmallows at all. I don't even worry about seeking out a vegan alternatively.  There is a vegan marshmallow out there somewhere though, I'm sure I've seen it around. :)

Yes, they were a major weakness - I really miss them. I could go thru cases of those things. I comfort myself that it is better for my health to avoid them. But I would love if they sold a vegan substitute!

no one in my family ever really enjoyed eating them, though they were in our easter baskets every year. about 4 or 5 years ago we found a new use for them though---

we'd go out to the end of the driveway at our grandpa's house (where easter dinner was) and put  a line of little peeps across the road, then sit out and talk and laugh while waiting for cars to run them over  :D

Earlier today I was looking through the vegan recipes on recipezaar and found this:

http://www.recipezaar.com/78524  (Vegan Marshallows!)  I don't have any desire (honestly  ;) ) to try it myself but here it is if anyone wants it.

;D  Very inventive.

(to the Mary, Mary Quite Contrary rhyme)

Sariea, Sariea, hola chica
How does your Easter go?
Eating chocolate eggs and laughing
With little peeps all in the road.

Did you ever microwave those? They'd inflate into HUGE monster Peeps-- and then promptly collapse when you opened the door...
and then they tastes like crap. Chewy, bubble-gum consistency crap. Apparently, Peeps don't microwave favorably. (Of course, does ANYTHING microwave favorably?) Ah, those Peeps... I really don't miss them, I was hypoglycemic, so I could only eat like 2 before they made me disastrously ill. But I miss the camaraderie that ensued from making Steroidal-Monster-Peeps...

And don't forget chocolate/marshmallow malts from the dairy! Sweet enough to make your teeth bust out crying and run home to mother!  ;D
It amazes me the junque I loved when I lived in the States...I was last there 11 yrs ago and bought some peppermint icecream and it was soooo sweet I couldn't eat it. The more you eat healthy, fresh food, the less industrially prepared stuff appeals!

I never liked the peeps things. I thought they were cute when I was a kid, but thought that they tasted just nasty.  I just wanted the chocolate bunnies, or anything chocolate, other wise I wasn't interested.  I didn't like marshmallows unless they were toasted, and all gooey.  I've never tried marshmallow cream.  Is it like a toasted marshmallow on the inside?

In a way, except it's not hot and doesn't blister your tongue.... :) As far as the peeps and bunnies go, i always liked the grainy sugar coating on the outside better than the inside. Even then I had problems biting the head off a bunny... ;D

The first (and last time ...lol) I tried a peep I spit it out, out of disgust!  It  landed right on my brothers stash of chocolates....so they became disgustingly sticky and ruined.  ::) Lol, he hated me for about a week.

There is a vegan marshmallow creme on the market . . .

What about Cadbury Mini-Eggs?

I never cared for any other brand - the coating was waxy.  But the mini eggs... ::)

This is my second vegan easter, and I still miss those little balls of sugar and fat.

Oh, these were my all-time favorite Easter candy!  Something about that Cadbury chocolate....

Actually, i don't miss those peeps at all.  As I grew older, even during my omni years, my attraction for them waned.  It's a cheap product.  But the purpose of this thread was to share a little Easter story and a slight joke (the joke being, how can those peeps be veganized? - sugar + vegan marshmallows, duh!  :P)

A big advantage of being a vegan at Easter is not having to worry about eating the sugary leftovers that I used to force myself to eat, the M and M's and reese's cups my family members wouldn't eat. Such confectionary wouldn't be completely gone until months after Easter, much like Halloween!  And this is a waste.

(On a side note, I find it amazing that whey produced from the cheese-making process is so enormous that confectionery can't use all of it, rendering it an enormous waste product --> another reason to go vegan)

I didn't grow up with peeps, so don't miss them. Though I do miss those chocolate covered marshmallow creme things on a wafer (Mohrenköpfe) we used to eat in Germany. They don't even sell them here as far as I know.

Even if we choose not to eat them, we can still laugh at them....
