How to make yellow color for cake decorating.

Hi everyone,

I am new to vegan baking, last year I made my husband a yummy carrot cake for his birthday, everything looks great except I was only allowed to use red and blue for decorating color, (according to him, food dye yellow 5 is not vegan) so he end up have a red and blue carrot on top of his cake.  :o

His B'day is  coming soon again! Now,  I have seen some lovely cake pictures on this site with yellow decoration on them, what should I use so I can get the yellow color?

Thanks a bunch in advance for your help!

welcome!  why does he think it's not vegan?  from what i just read on wikipedia it looks to be a completely synthetic ingredient.

although, i think it would be cute if you just kept using red and blue carrots for traditions sake.

I use Wilson food colors amongst others and I have never come across a non vegan one!  they are synthetic food grade dyes, so should be ok as far as I know.

and if youre really worried about it just finely grate some carrot and mix it into the frosting.

Oh, he said that he did the research many years ago and the yellow 5 food color contains some type of bugs as one of the ingredients, even on the label shows everything is synthetic.  Oh well...   ::)

thats actually not true - a quick google search for " red 40 source" came up with a bunch of sites explaining that it comes from coal.  you may be thinking of cochineal or carmine which is from beetles.

this site explains the difference:

if he's gonna be stubborn just use a bit of turmeric. It may change the taste a little, but it's just decorative carrots.

yes, turmeric is great for coloring. I added it to some marzipan to make little yellow lemons and it worked beautifully and didn't change the flavor.

annatto, saffron threads, turmeric, or other natural food dyes at whole foods that are 100% food-derived-- like red is from beets, etc....
