hangover food
slowly but surely i'm making a transition to a vegan diet. i seem to cheat about once or twice a week, but that is getting better.
last night i went to a party visiting with friends i hadn't seen in at least a year (including someone i hadn't seen in three years). throughout the night i managed to suck down a bottle of wine and a few shots of jager/the weird liquor with the gold flakes in it (keep in mind i'm a solid 110 lbs ::)).
when i got home early this morning i made a rice/tomato/potato/zucchini/chickpea casserole.
the hangover was so fierce that even after a meal and some water i had to take a nap.
in my hungover stupor i decided the best remedy for my situation was mcdonalds.
yuck, right? i mean, i haven't eaten there since last may after a camping trip. and i split a happy meal with my friend.
so what's everyone's favorite vegan hangover food? i need to build a list of foodstuffs to make for the day after parties. the casserole didn't curb the icky feeling of liquor induced dehydration, and it would be great to know some tried and true comforting recipes.
also, i'm allergic to all nuts and have an irrational distaste for apples.
Ramen, chik'n patties, any sort of greasy delicious potato, pancakes.
Drinking rules. I'm hungover right now
This is why I heart you. I crave salty and greasy as well. Breakfast burritos, smothered stuffed sopapillas, tater tots.
haven't had a hangover in quite awhile but greasy foods like french fries and pizza are the best especially when consumed with TONS of water and followed by a long nap!
Wow, what a variety of answers! I go with the breakfast burrito too, with lots of potatoes. Something heavier than usual seems to settle my stomach better. And drinking lots of water BEFORE you go to bed is a great thing to do.
thanks for the great suggestions!
unfortunately there's pretty much no available vegan takeout. i live in a province that prides their cattle production and the only thing a vegan can have "out" most places is plain rice and iceberg lettuce salad.
I feel your pain, there have been many a trip to a steakhouse with naught to eat but butterless baked potatoes and a tragic excuse for a salad. (Not to sound creepy or anything, but do you happen to live in Alberta too?)
While my hangover food tends to usually be pancakes (best for the times you've drank enough that you're still not quite sober - minimal effort and easy cleanup, especially if you keep a premixed container of the dry ingredients on hand), but if I have thawed tofu on hand I'll whip up my favorite hangover fighter - fried tofu on toast. Its fairly rare that I have the foresight to marinate the tofu so I usually just slather on some uncheese sauce and fry a couple slices with a good amount of oil. Keep a lid handy, it spatters!
Another thing is to freeze extra pancakes and waffles. Make a double batch next time you happen to make them at home and freeze in zip top baggies with paper towels between layers. Good hearty food for a hangover and all you need is a microwave and some maple syrup.
Like other posters have said, drinking lots of water is important (green and herbal teas help too). Hope this gives you some ideas ;)b Party on!
Greasy food is my hangover cure.
I also drink liters of water, if it is the kind of hangover where I can keep water down, and take my daily vitamins immediately. I find B vitamins help immensely and sometimes I take a little magnesium.
I like nooch smothered tofu breakfast scramble. Queso. "Chili dip" which is a can of warmed vegetarian chili and tofutti sour cream (SO UNHEALTHY). Also I believe some ready bake rolls are vegan. I have rolled Pillsbury croissant dough around slices of vegan cheese before and baked. Did I mention I am the QUEEN of disgusting greasy yummy food? Even when I am not hungover...
Also, I sometimes just order Papa John's original crust without cheese with lots of veggies on top. And if I feel like cheese, I make up a nooch sauce while I am waiting for delivery and top the pizza with that. >:D
None of my suggestions are healthy, but at least they are tasty IMO and approximate the fast food that is easy to miss. And maybe you will get a few more veggies in.
I usually throw myself on the couch with lots of water nearby, eat my food, and watch TV and nap until I feel human again. ;)b
Ugh I get TERRIBLE hangovers if I have more than 2 drinks of any kind. Disturbing, shaking, throwing up hangovers. I'm usually too sick to eat any food right away, so I always do tea and water first, then bread of some kind toasted with nothing on it, followed by an apple, followed by something greasy (sweet potato fries, fried eggplant, yum). Bread to soak up whatever poison is in there making me want to die, and then I heard something about the sugar and vitamins in apples helping you recover faster...and requires no shaky hangover cooking. :)
