German/Polish Food

Howdy, folks. For the past few years, my family has been having region-themed Christmas dinners. Two years ago, we did Middle Eastern; last year we did Norwegian. This year (my first Christmas after going veg nine months ago), it's German/Polish. What will I eat!

After making a good impression on Thanksgiving (thanks to VegWeb recipes!), I'd like to bring something to Christmas Eve dinner that I can eat and other people will like.

So does anyone have any ideas for vegan/vegetarian German or Polish food?

Your public library might have a copy of The Vegetarian Epicure. The recipes can be veganised easily. She has a good section on Christmas food...her family were either Polish or Russian but I think Polish.

My mom makes me vegan Gulumpkis sometimes when I go visit her.  Here is a ridiculously UNvegan version of the recipe:  http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/stuffed-cabbage-rolls-galumpkis-recipe/index.html

My mom stuffs it with rice and beans or some kind of analog meat crumbles.  I'm pretty sure she just uses canned tomato sauce instead of the fancy version up there...

But yeah, they're super good!

I have Stollen in the oven right now. http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=5809.0  It is sooo yummy. Highly recommended!

The German Apple Cake in the Joy of Vegan Baking cookbook. It's easy to make, makes for nice presentation and is just really delicious.

Thanks, everyone! I like the look of that Stollen...

I'll let you all know what we end up with. I was looking into making the Gluehwein, but I think wine's been delegated to someone else.

my mom is polish/russian and we lived in germany for a while. i always think of this as comfort/homefood and the noodles (more like a drop dumpling/spitzel or however you spell it) are very tasty

Supposedly, we learn at least one new thing a day.  This will be mine for today.

I'm Polish/Lithuanian and man oh man do I miss some of the things my Mom used to make while I was growing up. If anyone has any recipes or knows of any sites, please let me know!
