Food Not Bombs

any of you vegwebbers ever been involved with a local chapter of food not bombs?  i'm thinking about trying to start one up around here, seems like a lot of work, but i also think the whole concept is great.

bee to a few, have not volunteered yet! I like it to...Apparently its illegal to "feed the homeless" so I use a food not bombs tactic whenever i need to privately...

But officer, I'm just sharing some food with my friends here...What do you mean homeless? Guys, you never mentioned you were homeless!

WTF! It's illegal to feed the homeless??? That's crazy! That's like saying putting bird seed in your back yard is illegal or giving a toy to a disadvantaged child is illegal! That really makes me mad that they would criminalize a good deed! *GRRR*  >:(

yeah...I don't get it either...there are pics on my hometowns FNB website (Tucson) of them getting arrested...http://www.foodnotbombs.net/tucsonfnb.html a few times actually....

I also like " we're having a pot luck...Do you want some? ;D You shouda' seen what Rick brought over earlier! It was the best truffles Ive ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Guinevere thinks its funny! :D

is it illegal to feed the homeless everywhere? wtf? i'm not near mankato anymore, i'm currently in wisconsin for school, but thank you for looking that stuff up Zealia.  Does anyone know anything about food licenses? Like what kind of license does a soup kitchen/salvation army type place have and what does that require of them. There's a peace and justice center here that i want to talk to about offering support if i go through with this, maybe they would be able to provide me with a kitchen facility?

a peace and justice center would be the perfect place for a food not bombs sort of thing!!! and they could give you so much support too! Talk to them about it for sure...Or contact any one of the of the other food not bombs groups because they are all so eager to help!!

So basically what they're saying is that the homeless--like pigeons--are vermin, and feeding them only encourages them to stay around????
Excuse me, but WTFFFF??
The mind boggles. Seriously.

I don't think it's necessarily "vermin" related (although that is likely an unspoken part of it). I think the reason they give is that you aren't allowed to serve food without a permit (for public health reasons). To get a permit, you need fancy-schmancy restaurant equipment to make sure things aren't contaminated with who-knows-what. It's totally lame, but that's the reasoning they give.

I feed the homeless at least once a week. I've never been involved with Food Not Bombs, but I have a Compilation LP called Food Not Bombs, where all proceeds went to the organization. It's a pretty sweet LP, too

Wow, I had no idea it was illegal to feed the homeless anywhere! What a bunch of crock. That's the silliest law I have ever heard. I don't understand the licensing thing either. I ran a bakery side business in high school and college. Cash only, and never reported it for taxes or asked for a license. I'm all about breaking laws without getting caught. ;)

Feeding the homeless is one law everyone should break IMO. What a cool way to oppose government!

I haven't ever heard of these organizations. I'll have to check them out. I mainly always give cash when I pass homeless. Because, if I were homeless, I'd appreciate having a choice, i.e. if I wanted food, I'd get food, If I wanted drugs/booze, I'd get that.

Food is obviously the more responsible thing to give, though. As it is a necessity.

I was involved in FNB when I was 17. It was awesome. I ought to look into it again, in my new neighborhood...

We wanted to start one in our college town, but it was impossible to dumpster food, we only had two grocery stores, and one used a compactor.  So instead, we all brought our own ingredients and called it soup not bombs and gave the soup to poor college students at lunch time on campus.  It was totally sweet.  I've only participated with FNB a couple times in Buffalo and Allentown, it was a big ordeal, dumpstering, cooking and feeding.

I do remember something else that I particpated in at my church, I totally forgot about this, the organist of my churches mother in law has been feeding the homeless weekly in philadelphia for the past 17 years, well, it was 17 years in 1998, so i guess about 27 years now.  She would make enough food to fill up her trunk, she had boxes with towels in her trunk to hold the gigantic pots of food, she would drive around Philadelphia, stopping when she saw a group of homeless people, stopping at all of the shelters and not stopping until all of the food was gone.  She was a working class woman, paying for the food herself.  Amazing.

I love the idea of FNB, but the work of this one woman is incredible.  I think though that the reason that she did not get arrested was because her husband was a pastor and maybe he had some sort of permit with the church.

Orlando FNB caught some hell regarding group feeding pretty recently: the city of Orlando (wankers) decided to make it illegal to feed more than 25 people in attacking mode against our homeless.  they have also made it illegal for homeless people to pander outside of designated, painted boxes on the sidewalk - which are not repainted, kept up, etc. - anyway, we have a lot of homeless people here that are so damned if they do, still damned if they don't.  so the OPD actually staked out a FNB feeding event and counted the server's ladling, and after ladle 31  (or whatever) they arrested him!!  can you believe it???  it was f'ed up...

on a more positive note, ethos vegan kitchen, our awesome 100% vegan restaurant, has started 10% Benefit Days, where they donate 10% of all checks for the day to a local non-profit of choice...today's beneficiary was actually Orlando FNB!  hooray! ;)b
