Calling all Germans, Vegan Food
Hello!
I'd send private messages but I'm not a subscriber.
I was just wondering if anyone who has lived in Germany or who currently lives in Germany has any tips for vegan eating without starving. ;D I'm going to be staying with family for three weeks and they are all VERY German. My grandparents will be horrified that I can't eat pancake soup, chocolate mousse, chocolate, bratwurst, etc. Which also means they will all probably think I can only eat vegetables. I'm not against eating vegetables, but I would like to try to eat a balanced diet if I can.
I will be able to cook my own meals after three weeks, so any advice about accidental vegan items I could buy or other food items that are good to cook with and where to find them would be awesome as well.
Thanks!
I have nothing helpful to contribute, I just wanted to say that my dad (who is very much NOT vegan) wants me to come over and we can combine our efforts to make his mom's cabbage rolls vegan! :D I also am hoping to veganize her recipe for dumplings (knoedel)...German foods can be so delicious! If successful, these recipes will make their way onto VW I'm sure. good luck!
i just wanna know more about this thing called "pancake soup" ???
mmmmm cabbage rolls sound soooo good. if you do it, post the recipe!

It's the yummiest dish ever! But not made with sweet pancakes, think more crepe-like soda pancakes in a vegetable broth (usually chicken though).
sounds good
Hey Wassernixe-
Where are you staying in Germany? If you know what Bundesstadt you are going to be in, you can go to www.toytown and ask on the forum (click on "discussion" it's on the top left) and ask where there's a health food store or maybe an Asian food store in town. People are pretty helpful there.
Most towns have a market down town a few times a week. The produce there is great, and you might be lucky enough to have a vegan stand there. We do in Sindelfingen. There should be a Turkish or Greek stand, and they do have stuffed grape leaves, hummus, bean stuff, roasted pepper stuff, grilled eggplant stuffsss...I don't know the name for everything, I just point!
Be warned that if you go to a donner restruant (Turkish fast food) that there is egg in their breads, and flat bread. But they should have the type of side dishes like they would have at the market. (We have tons of donner places in Sindelfingen.)
I have found seitan, tofu, and tempeh in the health food store in town. The Asian stores should have some fake meats. I buy my tofu at the Asian store, but I by my tempeh at the health food store, because theirs tastes better. The breads here have milk, and the pastas have egg. If you like going to cafes and getting a soy latte, I really doubt you will find any soy milk or milk subs at cafes here. Maybe you might at a Starbucks...I've never been in a Starbucks here. The only milk subs you'll find here are soy, or a soy/rice combo. (Is there vegan coffee cream that is packed for individual servings that you could bring? Just an idea if you like going to cafes...then you could just plop it in after you get your drink.) You should be able to find tofu, beans, quinoa, and bulgar,in the ethnic section at any grocery store. Tofu at a regular grocery stores usually comes in jars. Usually there will be like a healthy food/vegetarian section that has flax seeds (Leinsamen), nuts, and like a mix that you just add water, and you can make a veggie burger. I usually cook everything from scratch...so I don't know a whole lot of accidentally vegan stuff that is ready to eat. (When we lived in the states, I was the type that would make my own ketchup from scratch.) Oh!! A lot of the larger grocery stores (Real comes to mind) will have like a deli setup, with Greek food like you would find at the Markt Platz.
I hope that I was helpful! You'll have a wonderful time here!!! It's a beautiful country, with so much to do and see!!! I'm so happy we moved here!
Thanks so much for the suggestions! I'm having a interesting time trying to explain to my relatives that I'm vegane. I will be in Trier, but I'm currently in Dortmund. So far I have only shopped in the Penny Markt and once at Real. I'm so glad that I can find meat subs at HF stores! And I definitely plan on going to my local market once I get to Trier. Right now I'm trying to eat balanced while just finding things to eat. ;D
sauerkraut rocks. ;D
also, you should check out mihl's blog - she lives in germany and is all about the vegan german food. i've emailed her before about other things... so i'm sure she'd love to help you out.

Thanks for the tip! ;)b
I have manged to find some pretty cool Vegan.Vegetarian Restaurants. So if at a later date anyone needs some restaurant tips let me know!
Also the sheer amount of vegetarian vegan sausage, wurst, salami substitutes here is amazing. ;D
Try to get your hands on some vegan Krautfleckerl while you're there. Simple dish, but awesome. :)

*drool* Once me and my mom made cabbage rolls, and didnt tell everyone that my fake meat was in them, and they thought it was real and loved them. When they caught on that i was eating them too, they just stopped. hah. I almost have vegan cabbage rolls down, i know we used eggs but that can be easily taken out.
(i'm not much help on the german travel/living thing, but i just wanted to add that)
