Gee--black lentils? I've seen yellow, red and green, which are really dusty brown...but black is new!
Let me know how they come out!
I know them as "beluga lentils" and they are similar to puy lentils but black! Good stuff. I buy a microwaveable pack (Gourmet Merchant, I think), 2 mins to cook, brilliant to keep in a cupboard for a quick salad with diced cuke/toms/onions, fresh herbs and a vinaigrette (lemon juice, EVOO, salt and pepper) - had some the other night in fact.
edit: Yes they taste different to red/yellow/orange, which tend to mush down and are good for asian recipes; I like puy and beluga lentils al dente, but my man prefers green lentils well cooked (but not mushy) with vinegar and salt n pepa
Try em!
are they beluga lentils or are they urad dahl? i have had urad before.. they are indian.. they are sold as black lentils when they still have their skin, and as white lentils when they are peeled and split (cuz they are white inside).. urad is different than beluga lentils.. and urad is good, but does taste a little different than brown lentils..
Interesting. I have white lentils at home. Not just white on the inside, but white white. They were so pretty I had to buy them last time I was in Whole Foods. I just need a neat salad recipe to try them in, to show off their color!
Please please let us know how the black ones taste / look when cooked!
What do urad lentils look like? I bought what I thought was urad, but realized later it's spelled "urid" on the bag and they look more like adzuki beans, but black. So I don't know if I bought the right thing.
they actually do look alot like adzuki beans.. just super small.. they taste like lentils tho.. here.. check the wikipedia thing on them :).. at the bottom they have them as white lentils too..

Thanks so much oktokrewl! (Duh, wikipedia, why didn't I think of that??)
Now to find a recipe...
