Best Veggie Burger Recipe--that doesn't fall apart in the pan?!

It seems all the ones I've tried (vw or other) fall apart mid-saute or mid-bake-- is there a good recipe out there for homemade veggie (or nut/bean/whatever) burgers?! I'm kind of tired of wasting time and ingredients yet again on something that turns into crumbles.... any tried-and-true suggestions that are a good alternative to store-bought? Thx
I really thought my fellow vegwebbers would respond with some cool recipes by now...well, I'll just bump this.... :P
veggie patties aren't something i make, but i bet a recipe with vital wheat gluten would be less likely to fall apart. or maybe you could add some to your favorite recipe now? i dunno..
I've never found one I was totally satisfied with, so let me know!
One of my favorites is a spinach-nut burger at a restaurant near me. It is made with oats too. I wish I could find a recipe like it.
This worked well for me: http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=26087.msg278981#msg278981. The recipe that Kelsi posted was one that needed to be modified, and my modifications worked well. I do not have any experience frying them, though. I baked mine. I just sprinkled in some VWG (1/4 cup, or less?), but I don't know if it's necessary.
here's a link to one that looks good - and that site has alot more recipes for veggie burgers too, some are even linked to on this page..

Funny you should ask, I just came up with a recipe last week for a nut/bean patty. Check it out here: http://seesawfodder.blogspot.com/2009/01/vegan-bean-patties-and-bread-tutorial.html I also included a bread tutorial and a recipe for my beautiful buns. Oh yeah, I went there.
your buns are perfect!
Thanks for the links and recipes-- I will see what ingredients I have that match and make up a batch of something and report back! I know I can never really recreate a 'boca'-type patty because it's so processed, but it would nice to have a burger that at least holds together. My favorite burger that I've had at a veg cafe is a 'nut' burger-- so good! I have to try to recreate that recipe somehow or see if it's been leaked on the net somewhere >:D
We really like the Spicoli Burgers from Eat, Drink & Be Vegan by Dreena Burton. We've also had good luck with her Chickpea Sensation Patties from the same cookbook. I didn't have any "falling apart" issues with either of those. I've heard raves about VeganDad's Perfect Tempeh Burgers, also: http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2008/02/perfect-tempeh-burgers.html.

Thanks willwolf!
Today in class I made spicy tempeh sausages.. but the recipe could easily be modified to make a killer tempeh veggie burger!!
Steam the tempeh for 15 min.
Pulse the tempeh in a food processor or blender.
Mix together dry ingredients that would give it a hamburger taste (garlic, onion, allspice, paprika etc) with some barley flour (like 1/4 cup) for 2 packs for tempeh.
Put tempeh in flour/burger spice mix and get it all covered.
Whisk apple juice, oil, tamari and maple syrup, liquid smoke and dump into flour/tempeh mix. Form into patties and fry!
i'm addicted to the blackbean burgers in Veganomicon. They're so yummy and it's actually easier to bake them in the oven at 375 for about 20 minutes (flipping half way thru) so good with some ketchup

Good to hear! I've been planning on trying these out soon (though I'll have to leave out the cilantro for some because my boyfriend's a cilantro hater).

i actually leave out a bit because i'm lazy. instead of onion i use like 1/8 tsp onion powder, same with the garlic, i don't put the cilantro in, and i don't use nearly as much chili powder or cumin as the recipe says. cumin i can handle but the chili powder is just too much

Oh yeah! That's right Cali! She also made that vegan burger book. Looks uber good! :D
