1st birthday party-what should I make? (for babies and big people?)

Its a luau theme, but I'm open to any ideas.....I'm thinking of doing lots of dips, guac, artichoke dip, and rolls, and thats as far as I've gotten. Oh and one of the white cakes from this site.....which brings me to question #2 how do I decorate cakes???......
Which brings me, not quite clearly, to question #3...what should I be feeding my vegan 1 year old, she really likes anything covered in guac, black beans, and sometimes watermelon, any vegan moms with tips out there?
Thank you in advance for any help!!!! :-*
theres a recipe on here for black beans and bananas that i've heard is really good! that sounds like something kid friendly with the mushiness and sweetness of the bananas. And the bananas would go with a luau, theyre tropical! For the cake, I dont know if you use store bought food coloring, but I would try to go with natural food coloring, like beet, raspberry, tumeric, that kind of stuff, to keep those food dye #40 jitters down in the kids hehe. I dont know if you are in the south, but it's still so warm here! watermelon popsicles would still be a good treat right around now. just blend watermelon and pour into popsicle molds.
if you want to go all out. instead of having a pig on a spit with an apple in its mouth. you could do a big hunk of seitan with apples on the ends of the stick over a fire. i think that would be soooo yummy!! but its some sort of abstract veganization thing i guess. haha.
Oh great ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!! Watermelon popsicles, I never even thought of that!!!!!!!!!! She would love those! I was considering a "fake pig" to make it luau-esque, but wasn't really sure how to go about it! I'm going to try to make natural colorings, red #40 creeps me out, I haven't ever done it before but I saw a thread on here a while back I'll try to find.
Thanks for the help!

You should make that for iron chef. :D
I would also do a bunch of foods on skewers. For savory, you could do chunks of veggies and tofu, cherry tomatoes, etc. For the sweet, I've seen some very cute kid desserts that are chunks of fruit on skewers with fruit-flavored yogurt for dipping.
You probably know this already, but there are several commercially available frostings that are vegan. Not great for you, since they prob contain lots of sugar and hydrogenated oils, but just throwing that out there for your cake.

haha. iron chef! my entries will be even better!!!!
You could do "pulled pork" sandwiches using either seitan or hearts of palm (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=24400.0). I've never made either!
So, you have a theme: Luau. For a one year old birthday party? For how many? Who is coming? Kids? Age range? 5 people or 50? Plus you live in Hawaii? Color me jealous!!
Ok, forgive me but I have totally forgotten what one year olds eat. So take this as a general recommendation and feed your baby what they can chew and do like.
First get yourself some young green jackfruit in a can of water or brine. Make up some barbecue sauce and simmer the fruit in a slow cooker for 8 hours. You could also do this on low on the stove or in the oven but I like the ease of a crock pot. Instant* pulled pork! (*Relatively speaking!)
Fruit skewers are a great idea. Be sure that every skewer you get is either dull or you push the items off of it before handing it to the kids! No baby wants splinters or a jabbed eye.
Do the same thing with veggies. Grill them up on sticks and baste them with fruit. Orange is nice, pomegranate is awesome. Give it a more tropical touch.
Wrap tofu up with herbs in seaweed or banana leaves and poach it after it has been marinated. I would soak it in a concentrated veggie broth with some dulse for a fishy tone or just go all out and use malt vinegar.
Dips sound great. Kids love dips.
Plantains might be fun. Either as chips or fresh that you cut, fry, smash and fry again. Yummy things plantains. Plus they go great with black beans.
Decorate the cake by drawing flowers onto the frosting. Buy a natural food dye kit or make your own with turmeric, blueberries, beets and spinach. Just simmer the (last three) items individually in water, strain out the chunks and use the liquid as dye.
I think big beautiful flowers make a lovely luau cake. Also I would suggest using food safe type leaves as place mats if you can find something like that.
thank you everyone! ;)b
I never knew how to make natural food dyes, and now I do!
"pulled pork" sounds like something I could handle.

Oooooh! I'd heard of doing this with hearts of palm, but I love hearts of palm so much that I can never even get them home before devouring them. And I like jackfruit too, but if I eat too much at once it gives me an upset stomach, so I tend to eat them more slowly, so they last a little longer. ANNNNND it just so happens I have two cans of jackfruit right now, so I'm totally making this! Googled it and this is what I found...
When I decorate my son's cakes, I always buy some little toy figurines and put them on there-something he can keep and play with. One year when he loved match box cars, the cake had cars all over it. We've done robots, monsters, pirates, marbles...whatever he is into. You could probably just build a tower with some big legos or something and she would think that is cool!
I think a fruit salad with lots of small pieces of soft fruit would be good. maybe someone said this, but it could be served in a carved out watermelon boat thing.

There are many recipes out there for BBQ Jackfruit. I got mine off a blog but I didn't bookmark it. :( Just be sure to use a sauce you absolutely love, as it will taste only of that!
