The Rock-Your-Body Fitness Thread

We talk about health and exercise in a lot of different threads.  It's time for a one-stop shop.

As you all have read ad nauseam, I have a super slow metabolism so I'm always looking for ways to increase my fitness.

I'm going to join a gym next Wednesday (most likely).  Is it true that I should leave a day between working muscle groups?  I'll likely only be at the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I'm not sure what the best excercises are if I'm only going to be working that area once.  Like, Wednesday for legs or front and Thursdays for arms or back.  Something like that?  I'll have about an hour between work and when yoga starts and the gym will be relatively empty, so I'll have plenty of time and access to equipment.

----------

I recently read that dehydration leads to a drop on body temperature and a drop in temp triggers a body to store fat.  Of all the dagnabbit, underhanded, flea-analogue bitten things!  My normal temp is in the 97.1 - 97.3 F (36.2 - 36.3 C) range.

Thanks for your advice Cali :)  Low impact seems to be the way to go. Good thing I like bike riding.

I did 30 mins of legs and core workouts with Sparkpeople videos and rode the exercise bike for about another 30 mins. Plus I had to go up and down the stairs at work today a bijillion times. OK, I guess not that many, but it was alot! Not too bad after a tiring week, i guess.

Not sure what I'll do tomorrow, maybe some yogas in the morning and a short kayak trip later in the day. idk, we'll see. I needs my hemp shake now, very hungry! grrrrrrr, feed me!!!

I've done it twice now, and I really like it. I think it goes at a good pace--the first day of an exercise can be tough, but it's amazing how much better your endurance is by the third and final of a week. You set your "running pace" (though they give a suggestion--I shoot for a 6 MPH run), and you're free to repeat workouts as necessary.

A minute  (which is how long the first running intervals are) goes by really, really quick. Just set your running pace to something reasonable (but challenging) and you'll be fine. Don't all-out sprint.

Ok, so I went and took a gymnastics class Friday. It was so fun! I used to take it when I was younger and loved it, and believe it or not I could still do the splits and backhand springs from my cheerleading days! It was quite a work out, as I haven't done any of it in years, but so cool. I think I will go once a week just to spice up my routine. By the way lost 6 lbs this week! I am so psyched :)

Wow.  How long had it been since you last did the splits?

hmmmmm. I'm fairly sure our gym memberships have just lapsed. As in, the direct debit stopped coming out of our bank account last week. But our cards still swiped and they let us in...
but it was due to expire about now, and I really don't know what to do.

I really want to keep going to the gym, but I think I can motivate myself to go for runs and do non-gym-related exercises, and then we'll have an extra $12 week in our savings account... I think I'll just keep going till we actually get told we've expired. mmm procrastination....

Yah it's been about 10 years! Amazing how your body can remember those things! But even though I did it, it hurt like hell! lol

Wow! Good for you! Keep it up you awesome thing you :)

I, on the other hand, was a total lazy ass this weekend. A random storm and hours of rain ruined my kayaking plans on Saturday ( those silly kayak renters wouldn't let us go play in the middle of a lake during a thunderstorm, what gives :P  So I rented some movies and was lazy all day. About the only real exercise I got all weekend was a 1/2 hr bike ride last night in the warmest weather we've had all year.

I'm planning on going to the gym and working on upper body tonight, then maybe ride my bike if it doesn't rain. Toodles.

I did a lot of walking this weekend but I dont think it was enough to qualify as exercise.  Nor would be wearing a corset for 8 hours but oh well!

Today I did my 12, 20 and 10 miles.  I guess I should have done something else productive aside from scour one bathroom.  At least I exercised tho!

The disappointing thing is that my scale is unkind.  I know, I know, muscle weighs more but still. I wanna see some difference darn it!  I think I have more muscle in my outer thigh but other than that and a bit more bicep no change.  I feel like pouting but i will persevere and still do my 12 miles on the bike tomorrow for cardio.

Don't worry I won't :)

I'm just learning how to now, unfortunately I can't afford my own kayak at the moment, so we rent them at the local park. I'm liking it so far. I might go for a day trip here soon, before summer is over. When did you start kayaking HH?

Workout update: No slacking for me today, did 30 mins of upper body at the gym and went for an hour long bike ride at the local bike trail. It stormed right before we went riding so it was nice and cool. Plus we saw a rainbow, yay!

Crap!!  WHy in the hell did I just wolf down a BUNCH of cookies?! :-[ At least my calories didn't exceed what I burned in my workouts. :-\ Does anyone else sabotage themselves this way??  If I cared to check; I bet my hormones are to blame! >:(

I did 46 minutes on the eliptical again along with my regular morning 10 minute wake-up routine.  Later before I go to bed I'll do some ab work and the 10 minute stretching program because I'm trying to improve on how inflexible I am.

Do you do 40+ minutes on the ellipitcal regularly?  I did 40 minutes today for the first time at 70-100% bars (whatever they are) at 130-135 cycles? per minute and I had soaked both sides of my shirt by the time I was done.  You qualify for badass status.

I'm new to kayaking, too.  Last summer I was on a six person outrigger canoe and got the bug, so I go single person kayaking.  I found this cool machine at the gym that no one is ever on that works the traps and lats, which is perfect.

Do you river/lake/bay/ocean kayak?

Just lake so far in a tandem (though single person is more fun),  I'm trying to go river kayaking before the summer is out. I would love to go ocean kayaking as well. I do this one exersise on the weight machine that has a rowing action that is pretty fun, I need to build up my arms before I do any serious kayaking. They are like sad little twigs :(

I get wiked cravings for fries at least once a week. Sometimes I give in, I feel like a total ass afterwards. The only good thing about it is they usually make me feel sick, which deters me from eating them for a while. I mostly crave crappy food when I'm seriously stressed.

A co-worker is an ex-pro volleyball player and wakes up at either 3:45a or 4a to work out every morning before work.  He is taking me to the gym next Monday or Wednesday to explain to me what equipment does what.  He told me to bring a notebook.  And he means it.

sounds intense, but good, if you get to learn about how everything works.  : )

I had a pretty good time at the gym last night too, just did my standard upper body workout, but I did most exercises a little slower, making them that little bit harder, so I felt pleasantly tired when I was done.
Exercises: 3 sets of 10-12 reps of:  chest press 9kg dumbells, shoulder press 8kg dumbells, lat pulldown 30kg, seated row 27kg, tricep pushdown 32kg, bicep curl 9kg dumbells.

My co-worker just got a recumbant bike and was saying yesterday was hell on his quads biking home uphill.  He mentioned that he ate more carbs and protein than normal to help rebuild his muscle and how glucose from carbs becomes glycogen which is stored in muscles.  He talked about what that does and the chemical reactions, but he has a master's in chemistry so he talks at a higher level.  Anyway, you've been working out hard as of late.  Maybe your muscles wanted extra carbs.
