The Rock-Your-Body Fitness Thread

We talk about health and exercise in a lot of different threads.  It's time for a one-stop shop.

As you all have read ad nauseam, I have a super slow metabolism so I'm always looking for ways to increase my fitness.

I'm going to join a gym next Wednesday (most likely).  Is it true that I should leave a day between working muscle groups?  I'll likely only be at the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I'm not sure what the best excercises are if I'm only going to be working that area once.  Like, Wednesday for legs or front and Thursdays for arms or back.  Something like that?  I'll have about an hour between work and when yoga starts and the gym will be relatively empty, so I'll have plenty of time and access to equipment.

----------

I recently read that dehydration leads to a drop on body temperature and a drop in temp triggers a body to store fat.  Of all the dagnabbit, underhanded, flea-analogue bitten things!  My normal temp is in the 97.1 - 97.3 F (36.2 - 36.3 C) range.

Fruit? More than 4 hours before you work out?

Well, there's your problem.  ;)

hmm, yeah, I mean I do know that you're meant to eat before and after working out, but I never do, and I've been going to the gym three times a week for six months and have never felt dizzy or weird before.  We do tend to have dinner within an hour of getting home from the gym though, so that covers post-workout re-fill.

I have an hour drive to get to the gym after work, and I don't feel like bringing extra food to work just to make myself eat at the end of the day...hmmpfh...

Wednesday:  I ran for about 45 minutes.  I'm pissed because my nike+ipod sensor is out of batteries so I can't track my pace.  It was a good run though.  So humid, I soaked through two sports bras and my shirt and sweat was just drippingggg off me.  I chose three main big hills and focused on those and it was very tough.  I run up the hills as fast as I can and I won't stop til I reach the top.  But I like my workouts to have those type of near-death-experience moments or I won't feel like it was worthwhile.

Then I ran into the gym and did 30 min on the elliptical, and abs, and some arms.  I learned that the gym scale I use is a few pounds heavier (one of the trainers told me).  I guess it's nice to know that I'm lighter than it says, but that's the only scale I'm using, and I'm more concerned about the change than the number itself.

I'm also trying to make sure I eat enough since I've been working out harder.  k says I need to eat at least 1600 calories.  I have no freakin idea how much I eat.  I just figure, I'll keep working out hard, and if I start to feel worn down, I'll know.

I think tomorrow I might run in the morning and do spinning in the evening.  In between I have to work and get ready my trip to see AC!

What's your goal, kmk?  shea?  Her legs are awesome.

My goal is that canoe woman's arms and back.

My goal is to lose about 25 more pounds.  We'll see, I'm just gonna stop when it looks good.  My leg muscles are pretty nice as is.  My calves are awesome and my quads/hamstrings are coming along ok.  But I also want to lose weight without losing my curves (when I used to be thinner, I had like no butt, and now I do!), so it might end up being less than 25.  I want my waist to be more trim, and my arms too.  Right now, I'm adding plenty of muscle, but it will be a while before it shows.  Which is frustrating, because the scale is pretty stagnant.

WOW KMK! I can't believe you want to lose that much weight, you look so fabulous! Would it be insanely rude to ask your stats? (height, weight). Just curious. I think you look great as is. I am jealous. lol.

I have performance goals instead of pound goals.  For arms and back, I want to kayak in the open ocean and be confident that I have enough strength.  For legs and lungs, I'd like to get back into hiking to the top of 10,000+ foot summits.

Oh no, don't go by the pics in my album here!  I don't look like that at all now.  That was like 2 years ago.  I'm about 5 feet and I weigh (according to the lowest gym scale, who knows) about 127.  Thanks for the compliments!

Well I still say your beautiful!  I had it in my head that you were tall for some reason. I pictured 5'6" or something. Wierd how we imagine other people. Anyway, my pic is like 2 years old too, and I am not changing it until I lose 40lbs. If it makes you feel better, I am 5'3" and I weigh 155. I just started running again for the first time since I got out of the Army(5 years ago), and boy...ouch! lol. reading your workout ethic is inspirational!

Yesterday I did my 12 minutes floor, 20 minutes weight lifting and 9 miles on the bike.  Not too shabby.

Today I need to get in my gear and go downstairs for 10 miles before I run out of time.  Ugh!

I think its harder for me to do alternate days.  If its 3 or 5 days in a row working out hard I can just push myself to do it, but if its a hard day, easy day, hard day easy day, rinse, repeat.... then I feel like slacking off entirely on the "easy" day.  bah!

Getting changed now for the bike.  I will do this!

I did 20 minutes of cardio as soon as I got home yesterday. I am so proud of myself!

It's not much, but since I am just starting out I don't want to overdo it and get discouraged. My arms are still sore from the push-ups I did two days ago. But it's all going great!

I am so excited to fit into my little black dress that I wore on Josh & my first date 4 years ago.

I will do it!

Go, cali!  Go, cali!

jc:  I agree.  There's no shame about being active.  Twenty minutes is enough for me right now, too.  It's about building up strength and endurance.  We're both going to be active from here on out, so starting at a consistent and practical pace is just fine.

The last peak I went up, Mt. Dana at 13061 feet (4146 m), just about killed me.  That was years ago.  I also hiked up to the base of Half Dome in Yosemite while sick and didn't feel well enough to scale the cables to the top.  I want to do that, too.

Hey--haven't been around much lately, but I should. I COMPLETELY fell off the wagon. I think it had mostly to do with my traveling this month. Combined with some other things that have affected my weight (documented on other threads around here) it's really time to get going.

Currently I'm just starting from scratch on everything. Back to Week 1 of Couch-to-5K. Back to Level 1 of the Shred. My goal is to follow couch-to-5k three days a week (monday, wednesday, friday) and to use shred as my weights--do it as much as possible but not get too freaked out if I can't do it EVERY. DAY. This past tuesday, which was a non-running day, I threw in an interval session on the eliptical, which I like b/c it's lower impact with running.

Along with that, I also have added back exercises and extra core exercises after running (I had leg issues last time I ran, and got the advice here to strengthen back and core), and leave LOTS of time for stretching. I hope to add more yoga and pilates later, perhaps after the shred DVD has run out and I move onto weights at the gym instead.

I'm not even going to weigh myself until a few weeks in.

Sweet!  Welcome back aboard the fitness boat.  http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:apKabUtHS-zxVM:http://www.webtvwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/the-love-boat.jpg

Weighing yourself when building muscle seems inherently full of pitfalls.  You'll be depressed that you put all of that effort in, but you're not losing much weight, but you are losing weight and replacing it with muscle.

I posted this on the images thread, but it's worth posting here.  From this non-fitness level (picture taken about 15 minutes ago), I will transform myself into a badass.  So it has been written, so it shall be done.

No, I'm quite short!  But I like to wear heels a lot.  Especially at work, so I can at least be taller than some of my seventh graders.

I'm not sure where I will fit in my workout today.  I'm so busy trying to finish my curricula and then get ready to leave for AC's!  I might just shred or do Pilates later.  That, or do two smaller workouts tomorrow.

Wow, hh, your cheekbones are fabulous!

Today I was tired so I only managed 41 minutes on the eliptical plus my morning stretching video.
