The Rock-Your-Body Fitness Thread

We talk about health and exercise in a lot of different threads.  It's time for a one-stop shop.

As you all have read ad nauseam, I have a super slow metabolism so I'm always looking for ways to increase my fitness.

I'm going to join a gym next Wednesday (most likely).  Is it true that I should leave a day between working muscle groups?  I'll likely only be at the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I'm not sure what the best excercises are if I'm only going to be working that area once.  Like, Wednesday for legs or front and Thursdays for arms or back.  Something like that?  I'll have about an hour between work and when yoga starts and the gym will be relatively empty, so I'll have plenty of time and access to equipment.

----------

I recently read that dehydration leads to a drop on body temperature and a drop in temp triggers a body to store fat.  Of all the dagnabbit, underhanded, flea-analogue bitten things!  My normal temp is in the 97.1 - 97.3 F (36.2 - 36.3 C) range.

It was legs day, which means three sets of 10-12 reps of 90kg leg press, 30kg leg extensions, 24 kg leg curls, 42kg adductor machine and 60kg calf raises.
I like legs day : )

This thread is really inspiring!  DH and I are still doing P90X!  After today's yoga we'll have successfully completed 30 days!  Just 60 more to go!!  This Tuesday is when we weigh/measure ourselves... I'm curious to see what the progress is so far.  I'll be sure to post my stats!

Along with the P90X 6 days/week I've been running 4 days/week.  I signed up for a 1/2 marathon on November 15th!! ;)

Hey Lauren, I'm doing P90X, too! I love it!! But I'm not following the plan exactly. What I do is: Mondays - yoga; Tuesdays - I run (5-6 miles); Wednesday - one of the upper body workouts (ie. Shoulders & Arms); Thursday - I run (again, 5-6 miles); Friday - another upper body workout (ie. Kenpo or Chest/Shoulders/Triceps); Saturday - long run (8 miles); Sunday - rest or stretch. I am in awe of you running 4 days a week AND doing P90X 6 days! Where do you find time & energy!

But seriously, I love P90X! I've been doing it since April. Tony is such a tool though LOL. My DH and I are always saying things to each other like "look at these triceps..diamonds of gold!" and "we're supersonic X fit!!"  ;D If you're not laughing at him already, you will be after a few months!  ^-^

Is this your first half marathon? Which one are you doing?

Hi!!

DH and I agree.... Tony IS cheesy!!  "I recommend foot spray" ... gets us rolling every time!  It's pretty much like doubles for me right now... I'm lucky in that 3 days/week I can run at lunch due to my job's fitness policy and then the 4th day is a weekend day.  Other than that... I just make it work with time.  I figure 1 hour is just 1 hour!  School starts Sept 1st; so I'm sure I'll be a little more stressed soon.  We're on week 5 right now... and it is hard after the "recovery" week!

This will be my first 1/2... I'm doing: 13.1 Marathon™ - Fort Lauderdale on November 15th!!

I got 12 miles done yesterday as well as vacuuming and sweeping!

Today I did my regular minutes but a totally different routine.  Still 12 min stretching from Shred, 20 minutes weights and 10 miles on the bike.  I even through in one set on my pilaties machine.  Tomorrow is just bike time and probably mopping. hahah

wow 90kg on leg press - I'm impressed.
Has been a good gym week for me but I need to get on and finish my presentation for tomorrow and it's nearly midnight, so I will post more tomorrow or at the weekend.
I just wanted to say I was impressed before I forgot all about it!

I joined a gym today!  I only had about 30 minutes before my yoga class so I figured out how to use the eliptical machine and just did that.  I watched for people using the weight equipment, but no one used the machines I was interested in so I'm still not sure how to adjust or use those.

HH, When I first joined the gym I hated weight training because I had no idea how to use the machines. It just takes a little time and some friendly advice from your fellow gym rats! You'll get it in no time. And I love the eliptical. Good luck!

Wow, you guys are really inspiring me to keep up with my workout regime! It's been tough going since I sprained my ankle 2 months ago. I HATE not being able to hike!!! I mostly ride my bike a few times a week, do some yogas, some pilates, and some weights. I like working out to Sparkpeople videos since they keep me from getting bored. Anyone else dealt with a badly sprained ankle before, how long do you have to stay off of it? Can you do exercises to help it heal faster?

I don't really have a wieght loss goal, I would just like to be more fit and have some muscle tone. Which is tough 'cuz my muscles take FOREVER to heal. so annoying.

Good luck with your fitness goals everybody! :)

Wheee! I've worked out seven of the last eight days!

Monday: run (Couch-to-5k level 1) and shred (level 1), with some extra core thrown in
Tuesday: elliptical, 30 minutes of intervals
Wednesday: run (C25K1) and shred (L1), extra core
Thursday: elliptical, 30 minutes of intervals
Friday: at work until 8 PM... no working out :(
Saturday: run (C25K1)
Sunday: Shred (L1)
Today: run (C25K level 2)... trying to talk myself into shredding!

My goal is really to start fitting back into clothes. It's really bad.

I'm interested in how you're finding the Couch to 5k because I've been thinking of trying it.  I am a really terrible runner (as in out of breath in about 5 seconds) and I'm hoping it would help build my endurance.

I severely sprained my ankle in May 2008.  It hurt outright until about November 2008 and it didn't heal to the point where I didn't notice it until January 2009.  I didn't go to the doctor so I don't know physical therapy moves.

yeah, I can't afford to go to the doctor, so i've been wearing a brace and trying to stay off of it. exercises like bike riding and pilates don't seem to hurt it. but, i really just want to go hiking.

I was getting worried that it had been hurting for so long, but according to several people I have asked, sprains seem to take forever to heal. I just need to be more patient  :-[

Sorry your ankle hurt you for so long HH  :'(  I hope it feels better now.

It feels fine now.  I started using it more once there was no pain and in April/May through June 2009 it hurt again.  It healed fine eventually, it just took forever.  I think the key to it is respecting the prolonged healing process and to not do anything crazy with it.  I think you're doing it right by doing things that don't hurt and not doing things that do hurt.

NOTE:  D'oh!  I just realized that I had the wrong years.  I sprained it in 2007, it healed and hurt again last summer, in 2008.  Now in 2009 it's fine.

I got to the gym kind of late, so I only had a half hour before yoga.  I did 20 minutes on the elliptical to get in my minimum cardio and watched people use the weight machines.  There were more people in the gym today (maybe a whole dozen!) and I got to see how different equipment worked.  I did arm exercises on one and then got ready to yoga, which ended up being cancelled tonight.  So I came home early.

The shirt I grabbed for the gym must not have dried properly and it smelled sour.  Ick.

I did 46 minutes on the eliptical again along with my regular morning 10 minute wake-up routine.  Later before I go to bed I'll do some ab work and the 10 minute stretching program because I'm trying to improve on how inflexible I am.

My shoulder is finally better!  Not that I took any days off, but I was super careful with it and modified stuff as necesary.  Week 5 of P90X is halfway over. ^-^

I did get hit with a severe allergy/sinus flare up, so I took Wednesday off from running since I couldn't breathe.  The 1/2 training program I have is 10wks long, but I have like 15wks until the actual race.... That way I have the option to repeat a week if something like this comes up. ;)b

How do I get more resistence on the eliptical machine?  I set it at a higher/harder routine, but I'd like to have to push down with my feet harder than I do.  It's easier to balance with more resistance, even if I'm going the same speed.  Do I have to say that I weigh more or less than I do or something like that?

I don't really know..I don't usually play around with the settings that much.  I rely on the pre-programmed routines and only vary my times.  When I'm doing the interval program it rotates between levels 2 and 10...It's definately a lot more resistance on 10.  The hill climber program starts at 2 and goes up to level 8 but the angle of the pedals also changes and by the time it gets up to 8..I want to die.  You can really feel it more in your butt and hamstrings (sp?).

I'll try keeping it on 7-10 the whole time the next time I go.  When I don't have to touch the handle for balance I feel it in my hamstrings more, which I like.

I went to the gym for about 45 mins. last night, 30 mins of upper body and 15 on the exercise bike. I pushed my arms a little much and they feel all tired and rubbery today. I've been trying a new way if doing sets: 12, then 10, then 8. Gives me a better workout than the two sets of ten I had been doing. Doing lower body and core tonight, yay!  :D

Yesterday I did my 12 miles on the bike plus weeding in my small veggie plant patch.  Today I did my stretching for 12 minutes, weights for 20 and biked for 8 miles.  Yeah I slacked today on the bike but I have more weeding to do and I am so wicked sore from the darn pilaties machine.  Bah!

Sprains or ankles I (un)fortunately know nothing about to help.  Sorry.  But I would recommend no impact type exercises.  Swimming would be good too along with the bike.  For my knees I avoid almost all stress like lunges, jumping or squats.  Not sure if the ankle if affected by those though.  I do more things like leg lifts, donkey kicks and floor work instead.  Someday I hope to be able to do the leg machines where you sit with your legs in a chair type position and lift them upwards but right now I still cant do that with any weight on them.  Oh well!  Its a goal.
