Feeling Ancient

I love reading everyone's posts, and then I go visit profiles, because it's fun to learn about the people who have such great personalities.

BUT....

Every profile I've read has belonged to twenty-somethings.  Are there any ancient ones lurking besides me?  Say, over forty?  Or am I the only one heading for menopause?

Just curious...

I'm def'ly not 20-something! (and wouldn't go back, if i could!) At 39,  I'm just about halfway between my 'mother' and 'crone' life  phases, and plenty happy with that situation.  :)

Oh, 39!  That was my best year EVER.  Got married to the love of my life, and had my last baby.  He's turning 10 in September.  EEEK!

A lot has changed since then! Some good, some not so good.  Trying to tip the scales toward the former these days!

Hope you always feel that way, that you'd never want to go back.  I myself am waiting for crone-hood with bated breath.  My mil says when you are "of a certain age" you don't have to guard your tongue anymore; just say what you want.  Ahhh the freedom!

EEK report from my life: my last baby (also coincidentally my first, haha!) is off to college this fall... I currently feel WAY old, for my age! It's hard to absorb, but -- in the absence of any other choice! -- I guess I can deal with it...

Do you know Jenny Joseph's poem, 'Warning -- When I am an old woman I shall wear purple'? Love it! & seems appropriate here...

"When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple."

I knew I liked you.

Yeah, I love that poem.  My mil who is 83 and quite the character, is a charter member of the Red Hat Society.  Me, I always wear purple; it's my favorite color!

My oldest is 22.  Twelve year span between kids. It makes for interesting times.  =}

I love your description of yourself; very much how I'd describe myself; except replace all that activity stuff with couch potato.  :-D    I'm trying to overcome that particular trait, but it's not easy at my age!

My hair went gray in my early twenties.  I mean totally gray, not one here and there.  My husband is 15 years older than me, and his friends keep thinking I'm his mother.  How's THAT for EEEEK!!!

I finally broke down two weeks ago and hennaed my hair.  It's much longer than that profile pic (taken the Mother's Day after that baby!)  Helps me feel not quite so old.  First vegan, then color the hair; what's next?  Exercise?  tee hee

I'm not expecting menopause soon but I'll be 48 in a month. :(

Why the frownie face?  Especially since you don't get menopause; you get mid life crisis!  Can I trade hormones and hot flashes for a hot red car and a tawdry affair?    :D

Right on, I'm in! ... I'll trade too; but I fancy a *black* muscle car, tho, and an 'arm candy' trophy wife old enough to be interesting.  >:D

anyone know if this is this the inspiration for the red hat society?

The Red Hat Society 'About Us' page will answer your question.

. . . you get mid life crisis! . .

Yeah, a few years back my wife actually suggested we go look at Harleys at the local dealership. Up til then she told me she would never let me ride a motorcycle. I road home on a new motorcycle that day. She either figured it was new motorcycle or new wife and she made a preemptive strike. . . or she had just taken out another life insurance policy on me.

I noticed the young ages too and was unsure if I should sign up...I'm 38. It's nice to know there's a few other "ancients" here!! :D

Don't worry, you're definitely not the only middle-aged person around here, though we do seem to be a minority, at least in the forums.  ;)

I'm the grandfather of posters here.  I'm 51 and probably the oldest one that regularly posts, definately the oldest male.  I've been around so long I was in my late 30's when I started posting here with my WebTV.

I'm still exceptionally fabulous despite my advanced age.  :)

The bottom line is you're welcome here, and made to feel welcome.  We have a common bond that unites us.

Nice to know there's one person older than me!  I know, age doesn't matter, right? And it doesn't... til it does....

But yes, every one here has been so helpful and welcoming, it's really a lovely community, and I'm very happy to have found you all.  Don't think I would have made it this far without all of your help!

Well, you are not alone. I am 43 and I am here!

And yes, there probably are way more younger people here for a variety of reasons.  For one reason, more of them are connected and are into the net than older people since they grew up with it. Also, people my and your age are often too busy with careers and/or families and other responsibilities to post too much.

Having said that, though, you are not a lone and just enjoy!

What's all this falderol about being middle aged?  Geez...I'm only 40.  Anyway, I intend to live forever.  It's worth a shot anyway.
