Walking?
When did your baby start walking.
My son took his first step almost two weeks ago, and since has learned to walk about three steps and then falls down, but that is it. He seems so slow to learn to walk. Is there anything I can do to help him? Should I worry about it?
He is 13 mo old right now, going to be 14mo old here in a few days. He just doesn't seem to care to try to walk.
Another question, I have this cart that he uses to walk by pushing he. He zips all around the apartment with this thing, I mean he runs with it. This is turning into how he gets around, even more than crawling, but he still doesn't walk and I am afraid that he is using this cart as a crutch and what used to be something to help him learn to walk is now hindering him. Should I take it away?
My daughter started at 13 months too. They are pretty stumbily for a good while if I remeber correctly! I have NO medical/factual basis for thinking this, but I think the cart would help build his muscle/control and balance.
I know my daughter is a tall/big baby, and my doctor warned us when she was younger not to freak out if it took longer for her gross motor stuff because she would have a harder time balancing.
Noah used a push thingy for a long time before he walked alone. I don't think it hurt or hindered anything. When he is ready, he will just do it.
Lyle on the other hand, took his first steps on his bday and hasn't crawled since. Once he figured it out he was sold.
Every kid is different. I wouldn't worry about it or take the push thing away. Some kids don't learn till 18 months!
My almost 7 month baby is crawling, so I have no experience with walkers, but I know that AVERAGE is considered 13 months. + or - MANY months is just fine. I wouldn't worry. My mother-in-law tells me that my husband didn't start walking until he was 2 1/2 YEARS old. I'm not sure if she got help for him or not. But he's fine now! Very smart, physically fit....I'm sure she must have agonized at the time....but now it's all just the distant past and didn't make any difference whatsoever. He had a play shopping cart that he pushed around. I also had a shopping cart and walked at 10 months. So I think it made no difference,
My daughter started walking around her first birthday. But, she never really crawled. She rolled everywhere and then just started walking. Her little cousin was the same, and didn't walk until around two years.
twinkie #2 started walking 4 days after his first birthday. He crawled before he walked.
twinkie #1 took his time... it was 5 months later so he would have been 17months. He was cruising before he started walking, he has an eye condition that affects is balance a wee bit and he just didn't want to let go of whatever he was holding on to. His learning to walk was our thanksgiving 2005 entertainment. All our dinner guests (aka the family) sat on the living room floor in a circle and he'd step step step collapse into someones arms and we'd all CHEER!! then pick him up, turn him around and send him in the direction of someone else. He'd step step step collapse and we'd all CHEER!! It was such a fun, rewarding game for him, he got the confidence to start walking on his own... he never really crawled he just scooted on his bum.

Mine all walked insanely early. Liam was 10.5 months, he didn't crawl first. Koen was cruising at 6 mo and walking at 9mo. Lilah walked at 10mo. But like others have said, there is a huge range of "normal" for all developmental milestones. Some kids who are early crawlers see less necessity in walking, as crawling is faster! My kids were also very big, like huge. It can take bigger babies a little longer to hit the gross motor milestones because they have more body to learn to control.
My friend's daughter started walking without assistance at 15 months (actually, just about the weekend her baby brother was born. poor timing there). Now at 7 months old, her brother is already pulling himself up to standing and figuring out how to take steps holding onto things! He was also crawling at 5 months. Both are fine and healthy, just different.
My son started walking by himself at around 13 months too. He never really crawled and he used a pushy thingy first
Second and third children often walk sooner than the oldest, who had mom and dad's undivided attention and can be picked up and carried more often. They also want to do whatever they see their sibs doing.
My daughter started standing up on her own and taking small steps at 9 months and around ten months she was walking pretty good but falling a lot and by 11 months she was walking almost perfectly and was starting to prefer walking instead of crawling. Now at a year, she is running and chasing the kitty and almost never crawls at all anymore:)
My daughter started walking while hanging onto furniture at 9 months, she crawled at 11 months, but didn't walk until 15 months. When she started walking the furnitrue, I though she'd be an early walker. So much for that idea.
