Red Quinoa (Quinoa)

I tried Red Quinoa for the first time this week.  I'm pretty much loving it.  Has anyone else tried it?  What do you think?  I've had a love affair with regular quinoa for quite sometime.  This is not better or worse...just a little different.  ;)  I'm gonna do some research, but until I do, does anyone know if the nutritional info is different from regular quinoa?

I would bet it's a little higher in nutrients, as is usually the case when something is more deeply colored (such as black sesame vs. brown). I have red quinoa in my pantry and enjoy it, but I have to say I do prefer the plain old tan kind...it's just a little more "buttery" tasting to me. But if you like the red, that's great! You're getting more nutrition that way (as if regular quinoa wasn't healthy enough!!)  :)

i've tried red quinoa.  I don't have very sensitive taste buds, i'm probably more of the typical guy type taste buds "oooh yummy - me eat grewl....more more..."  :^

that having been said, i've made both and don't really notice any difference between either or.  i'll usually just make both of them together and keep them in the same container.  the "rainbow" affect is purdy... and that in and of itself - makes them more desireable (sp.?) to eat.

I don't notice a difference either sirdidymus.  Of course, I've probably mangled my taste buds from years of chile peppers so I may not be a good gauge.

ooooh this reminds me that I have red quinoa in my cupboard that I still have not tried.  It will go in my lunches next week, I think.

Thanks for reminding me lotus :)

Thanks.  Does anyone know why there is an extra "quinoa" in parentheses in the subject line?

Ha, I was just wondering the exact same thing and thinking why the hell did you do the title like that.

funny to be talking about quinoa (quinoa) (hey, when in Rome...).  i try to eat quinoa (quinoa) on a daily basis and today i mixed it with some pineapple and orange pieces - the combination of the grain and the citrus was simply ... astounding!

Yum!  That sounds really good, Sir Did!  I don't eat quinoa everyday anymore, but last year when I was working a second job on evenings and weekends, I ate quinoa, kale and bell peppers almost everynight....and I never really got tired of it.  I love quinoa.  Hehe...actually when I was on a dating site, I put quinoa and kale as one of the "Six things I can't live without."

One time david cooked a surprise meal for me with it (from morgan spurlock's wife's recipe) and I didn't like it. It might have had to do with the rinsing. Don't you have to rinse it first? It tasted sort of dirty and bitter to me. I still have it in the pantry many years later. Maybe I will give it another whirl.

Do you just eat it plain, or can I jazz it up somehow? Because I don't think I'm a huge fan, but want to be!

I don't rinse it now, but I used to.  I think the stuff I buy may be pre-rinsed.  Try rinsing it and cooking it in veggie broth.  Some people like it better that way.

I like quinoa but I haven't tried the red kind yet. My roommate said it's way different and she doesn't like it at all, but she has some in a box in the pantry, so maybe I can try hers and see. She made me kinda scared to try it though.
Yeah, cooking in veggie broth definitely makes quinoa awesome, so I could try it with the red quinoa if I don't like it plain.

i too have read that you have to rinse.  However, i have never rinsed mine and it always came out fine - no bitter taste at all.  I have used both "boxed" and "bulk" variety.  The other day, while buying bulk - i took a moment to read the directions on the bulk bin - and it didn't mention anything about rinsing - so maybe, w/o me knowing - it had already been pre-rinsed as well.

I decided to try red quinoa (quinoa) :P again the other day... mebbe the third time I've ever eaten it. I wanted some pointers, so I searched and found this article very helpful.

She says you can toast it in oil, which removes the need to rinse it. I wanna try this... but I'm a little concerned over not washing my bulk quinoa (quinoa) at all... what d'you think? ???

when i buy from my bulk - there's a sign on the bulk container that has directions - so if yours have the same, it might tell you if you need to rinse them or not.

the easiest way to tell is by trial and error.  make a half cup w/o rinsing and see how it tastes to you.  if you do end up deciding to rinse, it almost seems like roasting them in oil would be as much work as rinsing perhaps ...

this isn't about red quinoa (quinoa), and please don't banish me from vegweb for admitting it, but I've never had quinoa... I did finally buy some from the bulk bin shop last weekend, however.

There are heaps of recipes around here, but I just wanted to ask the quinoa professionals what your favourite way to prepare quinoa is?

I want to make a dish my whole omnivorous family will eat, and so any fail-proof ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, my favorite is just quinoa topped with kale.  Sometimes I add something to the kale, but I just love the two together.  I mostly just use it as a replacement for rice.  It's more nutritious and cooks in half the time.

The best quinoa I had was at that Roy's Hawaiin fusion restaurant. The chef, after I told him I am vegan, made me a special dish off the menu that was incredible. It was red quinoa with sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions ... think I remember him saying he used olive oil, truffle oil. I wish I had that recipe because it was pretty amazing.

yeah I tend to just use it as a rice sub too.

I also really like the quinoa pilaf from vcon.  I'm just about to go to work, but (assuming I'll remember) I'll email it to you after work.

thanks guys, I figured simple sounded good, but really didn't want my first experimentation to not go well because it might turn the omnivorous ones off the concept of awesome yummy grains! : )
