So sad ...no one did anything to help...just stood around or drove around him and did nothing! :'(
I saw that this morning. I can understand not going over and trying to move him. But no one even went over to him to tell him help is on the way, etc for a long time (a long time if you're lying on the street bleeding.) Reminds me of the famous case of Kitty Genovese in 1964 that has become a standard study in Sociology of urban apathy. Thirrty-eight people heard her screams for help and only one called the police but then only after the assault was over.
I can't see the video, I think it is blocked here at work. But if this is what I saw this morning on the news, didn't that happen here in Houston?
Anyway, I was disgusted by that. People where driving by the body like it was nothing more than a old tire laying on the road. Could you image being that person who got hit? Laying there on the ground, unable to move and nobody helps you? He was probably unconcious but I was mortified. If I had seen something like that I would have picked up my phone instantly and called the police.
But I don't have a problem calling 911. I called 911 when I got a 4 inch laceration on my leg, I called 911 when my mom was thown from her horse and was lying on the ground not moving, and I damn near called 911 the other day when I saw a guy yelling like crazy at a woman in the passenger seat, it was so bad that the whole SUV was rocking, but I never saw him hit her, so I did not call 911. Why didn't somebody pick up their cell phone and call 911? I mean, that is why it is there, right?
Oh, it was Conneticut, found it on MSN news
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24989558/
Watching the video, the son of the guy who was hit said: this was a human being, even if it was an animal you wouldn't just stand there.
I am seriously appalled by this story! I keep thinking...what if had been my grandfather left out in the street like that? Where is the compassion and the will to help others? My heart goes out to this man and his family...
Oh my god. I wish I hadn't watched...
It said in the video that he is now paralyzed from the neck down. Poor guy, he may not live. But at least he was 78, it would have been even worse if it had been some kid at the beginning of his/her life.
It is stories and people like that that is the reason some hawaiians don`t respect or trust people from the mainland. ( of corse people are not like that but....)
I don`t understand why people would just stand around like that. it is so inconciderate. RRRRRRRRRR. I hope they got the guy who hit him and throw his ars in jail.. >:(

Yup, you beat me to it! I learned about that in psych. "Bystander nonintervention." It's like a psychological thing--in a place where there are lots of other people around, people don't want to be noticed or accept responsibility for the situation. If only one person had moved to help him, I bet lots of people would have joined in. :'(

It's also called bystander apathy or ignorance. Ugh..this put me in a bad/sad mood for the day! I think I'm going to have to stay away from this thread.
Wow, that is horrid! I understand that people would be shocked by something like this happening right in front of them, but seriously this is unbelievable!
I saw that too! isn'tthat the most awful thing ever???? Not only did the driver not stop--but people just stood around doing NOTHING! *ERG* Why I ask you...why?
I'm surprised the driver did not stop if only for the legal implications of a hit-and-run. I'm so confused.

Probably drunk, no license, stupid. One or all. It, unfortunately, happens all the time. Almost every story of someone getting hit by a car that makes the news is a hit and run. Maybe the ones where they stop don't make the news.
The article says the two cars were apparently chasing each other and the first one swerved and the second one hit him. And that police got there in under two minutes. When you are hurt it seems like a very long time but really its not. On the left there was one person that started forward and then moved quickly into the building, probably to call the police.
Some people dont look up. We are all trudging on our way home from work on a long day, thinking what to cook for dinner, about what to do tomorrow at work, weekend plans.... the list goes on and on. Some people witnessed the accident and probably did not feel safe entering the road themselves.
The drivers of the cars that witnessed the accident should have stopped. That would have helped the situation a LOT. Poor man, I hope he is ok and the people that ran him down are found and prosecuted.
I drove down the street where this happened yesterday. Park Street in Hartford. Made me sad. :'(

That's another bit of interesting psychology. If something happens to a person with younger features it's more horrible than if it happened to someone with mature feature. If something happened to me when I was 15, society would care, but now that I'm older I'm screwed if anything happens to me. Why do people want to save kids so bad if their interest is discarded when they've gained their adult features?

I've noticed this too. Society as a whole thinks that the youth is more important than the population at large. I can undertand it, because the youth is "tomorrow" or whatever that saying is. Older people are the NOW. We want to ensure that the species will continue. Or something. Just my theory.
My mother and I were discuing something like this where a man was shot and almost 30 cars drove by him bleeding to death and 2 called 911 without stopping. I think that was Detroit.
In conclusion, people suck.
There was a worse case in the UK, a woman collapsed on the street in a siezure and some *sshole peed on her, covered her with shaving cream etc. and TAPED it on his mobile to put it on the Internet! I think she died...can't find a link.
"Animal" is a compliment. Animals don't torture each other for entertainment. "Human"--now there's an insult.
Just saw this one on Yahoo:
Police say teens beat homeless Ohio man to death
People are great, no?
