Tofu Pups

My wife and I had a hankering for something like a hot dog this weekend. Bought some at Whole Foods called "Tofu Pups". They were disgusting. Gelatinous, grey. They made me think of disembodied male genitalia from the cadavers of very old people.

Anyone know of anything more appetizing?

I like the Tofurky Chipotle Franks myself.  Thanks for the warning on Tofu Pups.  I've seen them at the store, but never tried them.

I like Yves' veggie dogs the best. I tried Smart Dogs and they were disgusting.

Also - not that it's the right time of year or anything - but if you get a chance to go to the Pawtucket Red Sox next year, they have THE most AMAZING vegan hot dogs I have EVER tasted. They are to die for. I think they're portabella mushroom dogs which sounds gross (I hate mushrooms!) but they taste nothing like mushrooms - if anything, they taste slightly like unspicy chourizo. Total awesomeness! I wish I knew what they were because I'd love to buy some for home...

Just wanted to agree that Tofu Pups are terrible. They turn yellow when you cook them and are wiggly and gross.

I need to try a vegan hot dog sub. So far the only veg dogs I eat/have eaten are Quorn (pretty good but dinky) and Morningstar (my fave), none of which are vegan. I'll have to try Yves one of these days. Veggie Patch is supposed to be good too but I can never find them (and I have a coupon too). Thanks for the heads up on Smart Dogs - good thing I used my coupon for faux-turkey slices instead!

I too think Tofu Pups are gross.  I like Morningstar Brand but as feelinsoreal said, they are not vegan  :(

I usually buy the Yves brand veggie hot dogs.  Yves makes several different ones which can be confusing.  My boyfriend (who's definitely NOT vegan) really likes the Yves Meatless Hot Dogs sauteed in a skillet with a little oil and, of course, covered in mustard, ketchup, and relish.

I get the Smart Dogs.  I really like them.  I don't know how you cooked them, Veggeroni, but I grill them or saute them with olive oil until they get browned/ slightly charred.  So good!

Maybe that's the key...I just used the boiling water method it mentioned on the package. I bet they do taste better your way, I just have to muster up the courage to try them again  ;) The first attempt was pretty horrible!

Blech.  I bet they were pretty gross using the boiling water method.  Why do they put that on the package?!  It's a guaranteed way to make sure that you won't have repeat customers!

i've had tofu pups before and they were pink like the color of real hots dogs.  They weren't too bad.  The tofurkey products are good as well.

i advise against the boiling water way of heating them (not like the need to be cooked really)

cooking in a bit of oil on a frying pan, or in the oven makes them way less slimey

ewww I could never eat a boiled veggie dog again.  I worked at a camp, they have vegan food, which was sweet, but they would have a giant pot of boiling water with the veggie dogs swimming around, youd just take a tong thing and fish one out, most days they only had dogs and no bun, somedays, no ketchup, youd just have to eat a plain boiled veggie dog. it was horrible!!

Anyways, just wanted to say smart dogs, mmmmm.  I love them.  I just microwave them for 30 seconds and they turn out just fine.

This made me burst out laughing.  What a description....I think I'll run right out and buy some.  ;)

My wife and I were trying to figure out what they were most like. Once I came up with that one there was no reason to go on. They looked like something you might catch a glimpse of in an episode of Six Feet Under.

Haha!  I love Six Feet Under-- good reference to veggie dogs.  I have only tried the Smart Ones-- disgusting.  A friend said the "bratwurst" are better than the "hotdogs".  I haven't gathered up the courage to try.

p.s. It makes me sad every time i see the "warned" sign next to your name, KBone :(

Aww...thanks. Don't worry, I found out that it gets removed after three days providing I don't commit a second offense.

Ditto & ditto. I have had Smart Dogs on the grill before (not boiled), and I hated them! :P Blech! I wrote this on the board for that "The Pigs are Safe in the Barn" recipe (which are awesome, by the way :D), but I'll write it here, too. ;) The Smart Dogs taste way too chemical-like to me--and I don't think they're actually filled with chemicals; they just taste grrrrrross to me.

But, I absolutely love the Yves "The Good Dog"s. Smokey & yumyumyum!

I buy my husband the MSF ones, out of all the ones I've bought/cooked those seem to me to be the best of them. I usually saute' hot dog slices and then cook them in some sort of baked beans.

Blech - I dislike all "dog" food items, but brats...well, there's another story. I haven't had one since I went veg..you guys got me thinkin'!

And you should post your "pup" reviews on the Vegweb Product section too!

I guess not vegan but Morning Star Farms hot dogs have become my new favorites! Quorn dogs are really good too but I agree with another poster that they are teeny.
